there's a thread on what it means here What in God's name does Balearic mean?

but i didn't quite get it for a while until i downloaded a few mixes. this guys myspace blog is almost all balearic http://blog.myspace.com/jolyongreen

this comp sorta started setting me straight Cream Collect: Balearic.

and then i was emailing w/the lovefingers dude and he said this: "Yeah the balearic thing is a little ridiculous... I mean what it really is all about is smooth shit that sounds good when your on E in Ibiza... Whatever... I mean, I guess it pretty much means whatever harvey plays, ha. And harvey just says its adult dance music... Whatever the fuck that means."

jaxon (jaxon), Thursday, 12 October 2006 21:19 (eighteen years ago) link

but easily one of my fave tracks right now (balearic or not) is Carly Simon's "Why?"

jaxon (jaxon), Thursday, 12 October 2006 21:20 (eighteen years ago) link

jolyongreen's myspace page IS balearia defined!

lovefingers has some great taste, but I wouldn't look to him for the definition of balearic.

should i buy the solo Brian Ferry albums?

jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 17:02 (eighteen years ago) link

very new perhaps, but Reverso 68's "Piece Together" is one of the best balearic records I've ever heard, and I have heard a decent share of old ones too. amazing tune...their whole career can go on for years and they'll never top this....

Grrr I haven't heard "Piece Together", only the Manhead remix. Ronan did you like "Tokyo Disco"?

Yes...tho I kinda feel they are ploughing a sort of lonely furrow now...they are DJing here soon, I might go.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 08:57 (eighteen years ago) link

I always liked Electra's "Jibaro".

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 09:46 (eighteen years ago) link

i downloaded the mix hosted at Deepsoul3 on the jolyongreen blog and it was the worst of everything i could imagine about Balearic. Gypsy King's lite flamenco, smooth jazz, new age, keith jarrett, an instrumental version of Chris Issac's "Wicked Game" (barf).

jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 20 October 2006 17:45 (eighteen years ago) link

but it did have Christopher Cross' "Sailing" which i have a soft spot for

jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 20 October 2006 17:46 (eighteen years ago) link

"Balearic" doesn't exclusively mean "lite n' trancey"...Nitzer Ebb's "Join In The Chant" is considered a Balearic classic, for instance (though you're not likely to find it on an Ibiza comp)...

Heard an edit of this on the second volume of Balearica - the Original Sound Of The White Island, it's fire.

Why aren't there more comps of classic Balearic in print, anyway? It feels like the focus is only on new artists and the only thing we have about the history of the genre is that Bill Brewster list.

there are a couple blogs out there that sort of seem to specialize in old balearic-ish stuff--plaidmusic for example, and jolyon greens now thats what i call balearic, though that hasnt been updated in a while

Eric Clapton's opening credits song to the Stephen Frears movie The Hit (which is kinda balearic itself, btw - british gangsters road trip through Spain, lots of semi-mystical philosophizing, the remaining soundtrack is by Paco de Lucia.) End credits say he was "assisted by Roger Waters".

jaxon, Friday, 9 April 2010 04:01 (fourteen years ago) link

I think I remember reading that most of his records were hard to come by in the UK and and Europe due to only being released in Japan. I think the sleeve notes of the Mastercuts comp say this. Can't be sure though.

Sort of a menacing vibe to this one, like being lost in wilderness trying to make it back to camp before dark falls. Synth flutter that appears later on in the track is a dead ringer for a Black Dog song, maybe a sample i'm not familiar with.

ha yeah gr8080 put me onto this a year or 2 ago, i dont hear menace really, more a hip-grinding sexuality

Gatsby was a success, in the end, wasn't he? (D-40), Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:13 (thirteen years ago) link

grinding is the wrong word. bumping, more like

or i guess the menace i hear is more like the idk 'hostilitiy' of teasing/flirtatious banter

Gatsby was a success, in the end, wasn't he? (D-40), Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:14 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, i guess i'm thinking more about the synths underneath, which seem kind of sinsister to me, at least in contrast to the banter. definitely a "losing it on the weekend" thing

gardener by day, gatekeeper by night (blank), Thursday, 28 July 2011 23:54 (thirteen years ago) link

that synth line is so good that it makes it all the goofy vocals and sensual grinding and insistent menace actually work. together. all at once.

digging this, it gives me a little more context on how people used these in a set

also good timing since I just read the danny rampling and alfredo/ibiza interviews in "the record players"

a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Thursday, 11 August 2011 18:12 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah I'm enjoying it, the chapters are short so even the ones I thought I wouldn't be that interested in I can read 10 pages of no problem, ya know? at first looking at the list of DJs I thought it might be too uh British for me but actually the northern soul chapters and the Rampling, Ibiza, Hacienda stuff was interesting cause I haven't read about it 100 times like I have Kool Herc or whatever.

dmr, Thursday, 11 August 2011 22:02 (thirteen years ago) link

curious whether I will finish the whole thing though since now I'm down to the bitter end and the last few chapters are Oakenfold, Sasha, and Tiesto ...

dmr, Thursday, 11 August 2011 22:04 (thirteen years ago) link

yea there is always a point in those 'history of the dj' type books/features where it gets way too british and you're just sitting there wondering how it went to quickly from farley jackmaster funk to goldie or w/e
