kRAUTROCK - isn't this an offensive term ?
― Geordie Racer, Thursday, 7 June 2007 22:57 (sixteen years ago) link
coined by Germans themselves, if I'm not mistaken
― Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 7 June 2007 22:58 (sixteen years ago) link
dunno if that makes it OK though, I'm not German.
― Geordie Racer, Friday, 8 June 2007 00:05 (sixteen years ago) link
no. shut up.
― GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Friday, 8 June 2007 03:31 (sixteen years ago) link
The NME coined it, didn't they?
― Tom D., Friday, 8 June 2007 11:56 (sixteen years ago) link
'there's this new music sweeping the country'
yes.
― Geordie Racer, Friday, 8 June 2007 17:46 (sixteen years ago) link
so kraut isn't an insult to Germans?
― Geordie Racer, Friday, 8 June 2007 17:49 (sixteen years ago) link
Faust IV and then probably Sowiesoso
― Stevie D, Friday, 8 June 2007 17:58 (sixteen years ago) link

Soundtracks, for sure.
― baaderonixx, Thursday, 14 June 2007 08:12 (sixteen years ago) link
so kraut isn't an insult to Germans? no. why? i find it funny. btw it also means herb. as in "was für ein kraut rauchst du denn da?" what kind of herb are you smoking? which somehow fits much better to this music than the sauerkraut one usually associates with kraut.

For frenc-speaking ILXors, there's a book that just came out on krautrock. Looks pretty good::

― baaderonixx, Thursday, 14 June 2007 08:48 (sixteen years ago) link
That's pretty apt, and "herb skirt" sounds nicer than "cabbage skirt". Anyhow...
Faust IV, Viva, Sowiesoso, Schwingungen, Kraftwerk I? Whoever voted last time, you guys crazy! Or whoever forgot to vote last time because there were too many choices. Like me. And like I'm probably going to do again.
(Also, I will sulk if Can win, since as just about the only krautrock band I ever see/hear mentioned outside ILM everything they did is automatically "overrated", even though those albums are pretty good.)

Hmmmmmmmmm, "Landed" and "Saw Delight" are underrated, to name but two
― Tom D., Thursday, 14 June 2007 09:08 (sixteen years ago) link
For some reason I voted for Gilles Zeitschiff, even though there are clearly better albums on there. It is great, though.
As to where the term comes from, judging from the crack Faust made the other night before they played 'Krautrock' it was a British invention, and I'm pretty sure they said something about London, so I'm guessing it was the NME's very own work.

according to the german wikipedia john peel may have been the first to use the term. apparently he was inspired by a track by amon düül from 1968 called "mama düül und ihre sauerkrautband". it was on their album "psychedelic underground".
― alex in mainhattan, Thursday, 14 June 2007 16:11 (sixteen years ago) link
btw cluster are playing on friday in kassel during the opening of the documenta. it is a free - i suppose outdoor - concert.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm, and not by the fact that "Kraut" is an insulting term for a German? Unlikely, I'd have thought.

that is the well-known german self-irony...

faust IV for reals! that last poll was balls.

I've been quite into Sowiesoso lately; it's good music for lying around on lots of painkillers.

recently i listened to vuh, the 2nd side of in den gärten pharaos on the autobahn. it seemed like the most intense music ever recorded with the church organ drone and those crashing cymbals. scaruffi thinks that it is spiritual and apocalyptic. which probably makes sense but i had this impression of reaching a very high plateau and staying there. like having sex with an orgasm that lasts 15 minutes.

BTW faust IV is the most OVERrated krautrock record

oops clean link at least http://popsike.com/pix/20060914/280027711138.jpg

my vote as of june 2007 was for Hosianna Mantra
I love Faust IV more than most things, but... so many people who only own one Faust record own that one, it's total pop, half-page ads in Sassy magazine, the one on a major record label... I don't hate the term 'underrated' as much as I do the term 'overrated' but richard rorty rip
― Milton Parker, Friday, 15 June 2007 19:38 (sixteen years ago) link
yes what of contingency (dom), irony (siloah), and solidarity (achim reichel) ?
― noizez duk, Friday, 15 June 2007 20:04 (sixteen years ago) link
Shock horror, somebody shows up to bitch because the choices aren't obscure enough! Nothing if not predictable.
― Tom D., Saturday, 16 June 2007 11:45 (sixteen years ago) link

― Herman G. Neuname, Saturday, 16 June 2007 13:24 (sixteen years ago) link
yeah but doesn't that make sense if the poll is for "most underrated"? surely it should be some completely unknown thing that's actually half decent.

Nice to see La Dusseldorf getting some recognition, though Viva isn't exactly my favorite.
― Z S, Saturday, 16 June 2007 16:31 (sixteen years ago) link
neither la dusseldorf album is my favorite. you know? if they could've somehow mashed them together it would've been one excellent album.
