What's your personal style

i don't think we ever did this.
Like what's the way you dress on the daily and the weekly and the special occasions from head to toe.
for the past few years or so, I do boxer briefs, ankle high socks or sweatsocks depending on weather, sagging bluejeans, black leather belt, basketball shoes or black leather mephisto or ecco wingtips depending on circumstances/weather.
t-shirts generally. Probably like fifteen or so in rotation at any given time with some sort of nerdy design/logo.
Generally guayaberas or vintage screenprint shirts. I got heavy on Bagshaw's of St. Lucia's lately: http://pinterest.com/edgertor/bagshaws-st-lucia-fabrics/
Wintertime I'll do longsleeve pullover shirts, solid colors. I've got five or six varying coats depending on how cold it is. Dockworker hat. Scarf and leather gloves.
A few suits for when I have to.
How about you?

More often than not it's:

Levis 514, solid color button up, vans

With slight variations here and there.

Late Spring, summer: overheated hermit - shorts and t-shirts
Fall, winter, early spring: hibernating hermit - jeans, t-shirts, hoodies, baseball cap

i buy my nicer clothes from coldwater creek, loehmann's, and nordstrom rack. i used to shop at ross a lot but these days i can't even -- too crowded, the clothes are too cheap and loud-patterned. i go for solid colors, neutral or black with an accent color. a cross betwen a stereotypical nyc gallery snob and a women's studies professor in '70s ithaca.

When i make an effort (which is usually winter) my style is very Milanese. I get lots of lost tourists asking me for directions in Italian. It tends to be well-fitting (but not skinny) jeans, a jumper from Missoni, Dolce & Gabbana, Diesel, etc, and one of a selection of Belstaff jackets.

In summer, it's usually just jeans and a badly-ironed t-shirt. Today is fairly typical - Gucci jeans, stripey long-sleeve t-shirt and a Bosnia & Herzegovina Football Federation hoodie.

I like to wear suits at work (usually quite slim, modern - Tiger of Sweden, etc) with patterned shirts or plain ones with a bolder tie.

I like to wear ties. And brown. Brown ties are good.

conrad, Friday, 16 August 2013 09:56 (ten years ago) link

In the office = shirt (no tie), well-fitting trousers, brown brogues. Sleeves rolled up in summer. Except on Fridays in summer when I dress down a bit: today = brown cords (slim, not skinny), grey Fred Perry polo, grey Camper trainer-y shoes.

Out of the office = American Apparel ringer t-shirt (I have maybe ten, mostly in shades of grey with blue rings, but also in other colours too), Carhartt shorts in summer (not cargo shorts, disgusting), some knackered old New Balance trainers with flourescent laces or some Adidas thingies (they have a number, like ZX457 or something) in blue and red, or some Levi/Diesel jeans (slim, not skinny) or cords (grey or brown).

Everywhere = bright orange watch, Ray Ban frames.

My personal style is guided by two precepts:

1) What is clean or at least doesn't currently need washed?
2) What doesn't make me look fat or old? (Well, fatter and older.)

jeans/shorts + t-shirts almost exclusively (when attending temple i'll dress up w/ some slacks + a button down; sometimes even a tie!)

Mordy , Friday, 16 August 2013 12:56 (ten years ago) link

I essentially wear a pair of dark Levis 505s (or cheapo store brand equivalent) and a short sleeve Wrangler plaid snap-front cowboy shirt over a black t-shirt every damn day and I'm fine with this. If it's super hot I'll swap the t-shirt for a wifebeater and the jeans for a pair of cut off Dickies. Warren commission / 60s NASA engineer / Malcolm X eyeglasses as of last fall. Adidas Sambas, New Balance, Vans, or Chucks, or something else, mostly black - I love shoes and bags, have mostly not cared about clothing.

If I fancy it up I'll wear a damn sweater over a non-plaid button down and other shoes, though I don't have many dressy shoes at all. I started to finally lose weight over the last six months so I'm actually thinking about classing it up a bit more often, just cause it feels novel to sort of give a shit.

joygoat, Friday, 16 August 2013 16:37 (ten years ago) link

I don't tend to wear a lot of black. Always saw it as a cop-out, boring colour to wear. I've toned my style down a bit as I've gotten older but I've always been a fan of bold colours - yellow, red, orange mixed with blue or brown. I recently bought a light green/yellow camo jacket which I love. I now prefer collared shirts over t-shirts unless it's very warm. Used to wear a lot of ties but haven't donned one in ages. If I had to describe my style it would prob be colourful mod, but that's not all that accurate really.

my personal style is not terribly interesting but boy do i have some great daydreams about this stuff

⚓ (elmo argonaut), Friday, 16 August 2013 17:26 (ten years ago) link

i haven't been wearing a lot of ties for a while, it used to be my signature thing but i'm not trying quite as hard lately

long hair, don't care. beard is full and kinda ragged.

summer shirts are mostly oxford / madras / gingham, chinos are either cropped at the knee or not, feet get sheathed in beat up mocs or loafers.

accessories: tote in blue cotton ticking or a leather brief. hornrim sunglasses. silver ring w/ a glass bead. turkshead rope bracelet.

basically i look mostly like an island-dwelling preppy pothead except i don't wear polarfleece

⚓ (elmo argonaut), Friday, 16 August 2013 17:39 (ten years ago) link

This is easy. My style is pretty non-descript.

Jeans (used to be blue, recently switched to black), a solid-color long-sleeved cotton twill shirt with two button-flap breast pockets, a pair of "trail-running" shoes and white sweat socks. In winter, a wool sweater is generally added to these. This description is probably about as helpful as those police descriptions, like "suspect is medium height, medium build, brown hair, brown eyes".

no fomo (La Lechera), Friday, 16 August 2013 17:45 (ten years ago) link

my style is extremely limited, but i like that it way.

i like two-pocket chambray workshirts. for colder weather, i like two-pocket flannel or chamois shirts.

in summer i pretty much wear a loose pocket tee, usually some dark olive or sage color, with dark gray canvas shorts.

year-round i pretty much just wear dark gray khakis.

I try to only buy clothes at half price or better; beyond that constraint I wear a lot of slim chinos (I have four Norse Projects pairs in different colours), casual shirts, leather trainers. Have a thing for bright colours/patterns. I like the concept of ties but only really wear them for weddings.

Francois Toofo (seandalai), Wednesday, 21 August 2013 13:45 (ten years ago) link

wear a lot of slim/skinny jeans - shirts more than t-shirts (tho i've got a lot less formal and a bit more fashion-ish in the last few years) - still lots of blazers, and converse or other trainers or brogues if i feel like it. like one brightly coloured item per outfit i guess. ties sometimes, not quite as often these days. i've drifted towards having a more adaptable style whereas before i used to very much the same style on all occasions.

two years pass...

A bunch of homemade colourful stuff including various variations on a slimmed down pair of wrangler jeans. For the last few months that's tended to be with some variation on a jeans jacket that i've made based on a take off of a Levi's jacket. Probably most frequently been one made in a blue William Morris Strawberry thief drill with gold birds on it.
waistocat based on a western style thing that holds my walkman,, change bag, camera, wallet etc.
& possibly brown leather car coat over the top.
& brown leather either engineer boots, harness boots or brogue boots on my feet though today I'm wearing brown suede chelsea boots.
