Just saw the 5 min trailer for The Crazy Ones on CBS, with Robin Williams, Sarah Michelle Gellar and James Wolk at an ad agency. Lots of Kelly Clarkson in the pilot which, HEY! GREAT! Hopefully Williams will be less zany and manic than it appears so far.

Also looking forward to the Michael J. Fox thing on NBC.

What else looks good?

yeah it's got good ppl behind it, love joe lo truglio, and cop comedies if done well are fantastic (barney miller the pinnacle obv). i hope it's not too broad and ott, parks and rec style (which is what i'd assume we're getting) brought to a precinct is a good fit. did anyone here watch the job? really enjoyed that show and not just cuz karyn parsons was on it.

balls, Wednesday, 10 July 2013 02:12 (ten years ago) link

I watched Wanderlust last week and now anytime I see Joe Lo Truglio, the only thing I really see is his dong. Hope that doesn't ruin the show for me.

woah, look at that cast. what's the show? i'll def watch.

It's Brooklyn Nine-Nine on Fox.

The FX remake of the Danish/Swedish series The Bridge is airing tonight. AMC's The Killing has started to bore me rigid so it might be worth a shot.

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Wednesday, 10 July 2013 16:01 (ten years ago) link

i know it is terrible and all, but man i have really been loving Siberia quite a bit. i also assume i am the only fool actually watching it.

Giant killer bird? I was going to skip it, but now I'm having second thoughts.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 16:20 (ten years ago) link

i think that it may fulfill the promise of lost by killing a fuckton of people instead of having them all cuddle in a magic church somewhere

Magna Sharta (jjjusten), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 16:23 (ten years ago) link

I like the sound of that already! I skipped it cos I thought it might be in the same vein as that awful Cult.

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Wednesday, 10 July 2013 16:24 (ten years ago) link

My friend gave me her unused Roku, so I just signed up for a Netflix account with the intention of watching Orange Is the New Black tomorrow night.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 19:11 (ten years ago) link

Orange Is The New Black is supposed to be very good. Looking forward to it. Gonna try out The Bridge tonight.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 10 July 2013 19:15 (ten years ago) link

I might watch The Bridge too, but I'm afraid if I start with the remake I might never go back and watch the original.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 19:19 (ten years ago) link

I am starting the Danish/Swedish one after not getting too impressed by the NBC remake. I used to moan that tv/movies didn't feature enough blatantly ASC characters and after the recent mad proliferation of them I ain't sure it is a good thing. They are always very pretty/brilliant people. You never get any average ASC characters. It does have an effect people's attitudes, like the Tesco employee the other day who asked me "what is his gift?" . Yeah he can solve complex murder cases while looking great and doing equations for a laugh. The flip side is at least it highlights the fact that ASC people have a lot more going on in their inner life than what neurotypical people generally understand.

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Friday, 12 July 2013 19:46 (ten years ago) link

ASC?

Nhex, Friday, 12 July 2013 20:15 (ten years ago) link

Sorry. Austism Spectrum Condition.

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Friday, 12 July 2013 20:16 (ten years ago) link

I liked both The Bridge and Orange is the New Black. Diane Kruger's performance in The Bridge is very strange.

Anyone watch Naked and Afraid on Discovery? Reality tv. Two people, a man and woman, are stranded on a remote island, naked, and they have to figure out how to survive for like three weeks before a boat comes to pick them up. Also it has this weird stat that judges each person's total survival score ... a very bizarre addition that I found hilarious.

polyphonic, Monday, 15 July 2013 17:21 (ten years ago) link

Mixed-positive on The Bridge, but I will say that Demian Bichir is fantastic. I can already tell he won't be getting enough props; not the sort of performance that nabs awards, but a great one nonetheless.

Simon H., Monday, 15 July 2013 17:24 (ten years ago) link

Waiting until I get through Top of the Lake before I start Orange Is the New Black, but I'm looking forward to it. TotL starts off as a slog, but it picks up around E3 or E4.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Monday, 15 July 2013 17:24 (ten years ago) link

I didn't think the first episode of TotL was a slog at all. Very moody and interesting.

polyphonic, Monday, 15 July 2013 17:29 (ten years ago) link

Really wish there was gonna be a second series of TotL but it doesn't seem to be in the cards. I'd love to spend another seven (or seventy) hours exploring that world.

Simon H., Monday, 15 July 2013 17:59 (ten years ago) link

Very moody and interesting.

Looking backwards, I can appreciate the first two episodes, but I wasn't acclimated to the pace and atmosphere yet and I was counting the seconds.

1975 spring tv

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/21/arts/television/borscht-belt-sherwood-forest.html?hpw&_r=0

Cries of “The Mills Brothers! The Step Brothers! The Joyce Brothers!” were not youthful (nor hip) references even in 1975, but that wasn’t the point of “When Things Were Rotten.” Speed was. Mr. O’Connor, The Times’s critic, clocked the show’s gags at about one every 15 seconds.

just sayin, Thursday, 8 August 2013 06:10 (ten years ago) link

I kind of feel like the opening scene of this week's THE BRIDGE, in which cartel assholes try to parse the meaning of the term "serial killer," kind of justifies the show's existence, despite the fact that it's clearly pretty flawed.

Simon H., Thursday, 8 August 2013 06:16 (ten years ago) link

xpost yeah I saw the ad for Broadchurch and by the time the voiceover was saying 'David Tenn--" and I was settting my DVR

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 8 August 2013 15:20 (ten years ago) link

Broadchurch is a bit Midsomer Murders at times and the plotting is very by the numbers, here is one credible suspect acting very dodgy, oh no wasn't as it seemed, next. And so on until the final reveal. Tennant is very good and I like him doing grumpy Scottish, but Olivia Colman steals the show for me. It isn't in the same league as The Fall.

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Thursday, 8 August 2013 23:09 (ten years ago) link

I look forward to watching Broadchurch when it's on Netflix next year.

polyphonic, Thursday, 8 August 2013 23:12 (ten years ago) link

I just noticed a lot of the American reviewers fucking love Broadchurch and are giving it major praise. Just from from memory I think it got a more lukewarm or mixed critical reception over here. Despite it's faults, it is definitely worth watching.

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Thursday, 8 August 2013 23:19 (ten years ago) link

Also, this doesn't sound good: http://uproxx.com/tv/2014/05/is-community-about-to-be-cancelled-uh-looks-like-it/

it'd be a shame but i kinda want to see harmon do something else, i was intrigued to see what he might do w/ a final season of community but i wasn't that stoked to see what he'd do w/ just another season of community, definitely felt like he might of run out of ideas or stories for these characters.

Another spring, another day where NBC kills most of the shows they tried. In addition to Community, they just killed Revolution, Crisis, Believe and Growing Up Fisher (on top of the seven or eight other shows that didn't even make it to spring).

Johnny Fever, Friday, 9 May 2014 20:45 (nine years ago) link

Kinda sad about surviving jack - only saw pilot but meloni was hitting some interesting notes as a sitcom dad. Glad growing up fisher hit the axe, as Jk Simmons was basically playing a smug psychopath so far in denial he'd risk killing his family before acknowledging his disability.

da croupier, Friday, 9 May 2014 20:48 (nine years ago) link

Shit, I've been following Revolution. With only two left for this season, I assume it's not "finalized" at all. Do producers generally make versions of the last show of each season that could serve as a closer, if needed?

nickn, Friday, 9 May 2014 20:53 (nine years ago) link

Crisis was dumb but surprisingly watchable

chillin' on an "awesome pretzel" hoagie (DJP), Friday, 9 May 2014 20:53 (nine years ago) link

Both fisher and trophy wife struck me as a fundamentally disingenuous about divorce (though wife did have good cast and jokes) - having a hard time thinking of a comedy that had one (or two) central to the concept and really did right by it, let alone did well.

da croupier, Friday, 9 May 2014 20:54 (nine years ago) link

feels like network sitcoms are really stuck with more talent in front of the camera than behind the camera lately -- you get all these people like J.K. Simmons, Will Arnett, Chris Meloni, even Bradley Whitford who seem perfectly capable of picking a good project and carrying it and they end up on these shows that just stink of failure from the title and the premise on down.

some dude, Friday, 9 May 2014 20:59 (nine years ago) link

it's sad but my brightest hope for sitcoms at the moment is that USA is doing a bunch and just picked up Eliza Coupe and Billy Eichner vehicle.

some dude, Friday, 9 May 2014 21:00 (nine years ago) link

vehicleS, referring to 2 different shows.

some dude, Friday, 9 May 2014 21:00 (nine years ago) link

From what I've seen will arnett is the weakest part of we're the millers - admittedly cuz he spends the show going "I've made a terrible mistake" while the rest of the cast goes all-in on farting (a preferable choice if you find yourself in a wacky multi-cam, IMO).

da croupier, Friday, 9 May 2014 21:03 (nine years ago) link

Revolution was steadily improving and it is a shame it didn't make the cut because I have become quite fond of it, despite it not being particularly great. Certainly won't miss Believe, absolute rinse that Cuarón should be embarrassed to be linked with.

under the cobblestones, le dogshit (xelab), Friday, 9 May 2014 21:08 (nine years ago) link

Fascinated they haven't canceled Black Book, a show about how dangerous but sexy and rewarding it is to be manic depressive.

da croupier, Friday, 9 May 2014 21:20 (nine years ago) link

I will say re black book, at least it doesn't just exist atop a potentially offensive concept, but loudly trumpets the stance - it's pretty balls out for network tv

da croupier, Friday, 9 May 2014 21:21 (nine years ago) link

Critically savaged and reviled as offensive garbage by mental health professionals, but this is what the people want :(

under the cobblestones, le dogshit (xelab), Friday, 9 May 2014 21:29 (nine years ago) link

arnett seems miscast for the millers, have only seen the ads (and boy have i seen them) but character seems more michael bluth than gob

balls, Friday, 9 May 2014 22:35 (nine years ago) link

Kinda sucks about Revolution. I didn't watch it, but since they moved production to Texas, many friends and acquaintances had found work as crew and extras/stand ins on the show.

Damnit Janet Weiss & The Riot Grrriel (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 9 May 2014 22:53 (nine years ago) link

Arnett was kind of a dull straight man in Up All Night and Running Wilde too. maybe it's just hard to get a starring role where you get to be a weirdo like GOB or Devon Banks but it seems like he's just ignoring his strong suits.
