animation smears

This is the nomination thread for a ballot submission poll of the "top 100" animated films of "all time".

Nomination Eligibility Requirements

All nominated works must be animated, using any technique, traditional or computer-aided, including but not limited to hand-drawn, cel, stop-motion, rotoscoping, motion capture, and 3-D. For films which combine animation and live action, the work is only eligible if all the action is animated for the majority of the film. (James and the Giant Peach and Pagemaster are eligible, Pete's Dragon is not.) Works consisting of montaged still photographs of live action are ineligible (La jetee)

Films eligible for nomination include:
1. Feature films created for theatrical, home video, or television original release, including properly so-called feature films in the continuity of episodic television. (The Lion King and all its direct-to-video sequels are eligible. Most Naruto spin-off movies are eligible.)
2. Shorts and short-subjects intended for theatrical distribution, film festivals, anthology TV shows, or home video, but not individual episodes of any running TV series. (Warner Bros. shorts, Don Hertzfeldt, most animated shorts ever are eligible.)
3. Stand-alone "specials" created for television. (Rankin/Bass and Charlie Brown are eligible.)

Ineligible: any episodic content whatsoever, including TV series (Adventure Time), OVA (FLCL), web series (Homestar Runner), or individual episodes of same. (Maybe we'll poll this in Animated Creatures II.)

Nominate stuff by posting in this thread! Since lots of nominations, especially shorts, may be obscure, please provide as much identifying information as you can in your nomination, including YouTube or Vimeo links if possible.

Nominations will eventually be listed at http://stuff.jklol.net/animation/; this link will be updated periodically and updates announced in the thread. Nominations will close at a random time on or after June 10th.

Have fun!

Kinda, yeah...the way I vote in these is paste the nominations list into a text file and then start cutting, so the noms list really needs to be as complete as possible imo.

Trying to decide if I want to reserve a minimum or maximum percentage of ballot spots for features vs. shorts. I don't want to give in to any temptation to make this a LT/MM-heavy ballot.

Trey Imaginary Songz (WmC), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 21:32 (eleven years ago) link

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 21:32 (eleven years ago) link

watched a ton of those Disney shorts recently, pretty much all the ones from 1938 on with Goofy, Donald and Mickey are aces

did you already cover Clockcleaners? and the one where Goofy excercises?

Roger Barfing (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 21:40 (eleven years ago) link

omg the exercising Goofy one is A+, I forgot about that

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 21:41 (eleven years ago) link

In my dim hazy memory I know there are at least two different shorts (not sure of the studios involved) that involve a lion roaring over and over again in the jungle -- one of them wasn't all that imo, but the other one was so hysterically funny I was on the edge of wetting my pants. I haven't seen either of them in at least 30 years, but if I run across the funny one, it's definitely going on my ballot.

is it worth nominating any of the futurama movies? I just rewatched bender's big score and thought, nah.

Un autre: Gandahar, aka Light Years, 1988, René Laloux. Same guy as Fantastic Planet, more traditional animation, more ideas, better story.

God, what am I thinking. Gantz Graf, Alex Rutterford, 2002.

One poll in which I will NOT vote for Autechre.

Maybe shouldn't be adding more Popeyes, as vote-splitting may render his chances of placing more minute, but I was watching last night and these are particularly fab:

Just watching Madagascar, 2005, Eric Darnell/Tom McGrath. If a panda can get a nomination then lemurs deserve one too imo.

Hmm it's pretty annoying tho

kung fu panda 2008 btw, not 2011. think that may've been the second one.

Just took kids to Madagascar 3 yesterday. It is not any kind of great, and I wouldn't nominate it much less vote for it, BUT it does have pretty amazing set pieces. Action scenes in digital animation these days can be pretty mindblowing.

I am an unbiased poll administrator but that is a terrible movie.

It is not. Mike Mignola is incapable of producing anything of less than stellar quality, which reminds me:
The Amazing Screw-On Head (2006)

Hope it's eligible, it's a TV pilot of a series that never got picked up.

Nominations over!

Voting thread and updated nomination list mañana

Dang, I was gonna nominate:

Mindscape/Le Paysagiste (1976)
http://youtu.be/6Q9sY9Ti1DI

Gorgeous NFB Canada pinscreen animation. NFB probably underrepresented in general (did anyone nominate any Richard Condie?).
