Troubleshooting cable internet problem

I've got Time Warner cable internet at my new place - what they supplied was a Netgear CGD24G7D modem/router. I've been using that as a network, since my Airport Extreme is still at my old house for another two weeks.
The connection seems to hang randomly - in Chrome I'll just get stuck at "sending request." Sometimes heals itself, sometimes requires a modem reboot. I thought maybe it was wireless interference and decided to run an Ethernet cable, still running into the same problem.

TWC support claims that upstream and downstream are fine and have been thus far unwilling to send out a technician to check the lines.

I think I'm going to go buy a cable modem, so I can not pay them their lease fee anyway (fuck you, TWC), but is there anything else I can check on my end?

Went and got a Motorola SB6121, that seems to have fixed the issue. Would be much less annoying if I hadn't repeatedly asked someone at TWC to get me a new modem.

Switched to OpenDNS for good measure, but that didn't seem to affect anything.
