Come on, it's only been four out of ten episodes. Give it a chance!

I don't particularly relate to anybody on this show and I was largely appalled by the characters at first but since it keeps making me laugh, I'm sticking with it. It's also kind of fun to be reminded how callow I was at their age, too.

Her eyebrows were killing me

yes! and that she kept them like that all day+night!

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 8 May 2012 17:23 (eleven years ago) link

i love Angela Chase and Lindsey Weir too but in a high-school relating way, which is more of a friendly nostalgia with minor cringing at recognition of self. there's really something in Hannah that i somewhat shamefully relate to in an oh-my-god-agh-look-back-at-my-early-mid-20s-and-cringe-but-not-hate way.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 8 May 2012 17:29 (eleven years ago) link

i think they looked amazing? like i think she should keep them for the rest of the series + her life

xp

horseshoe, Tuesday, 8 May 2012 17:29 (eleven years ago) link

i thought that if they were a little toned down, they'd be perfect! (but i have never nearly approached that level of eyebrow make-up myself)

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 8 May 2012 17:33 (eleven years ago) link

Still liking this show a lot. This episode seemed a little more 'typical sitcom' in its pacing though, and then afterward I noticed it was the first one she didn't direct herself.

Hierophantiasis (Jon Lewis), Tuesday, 8 May 2012 17:34 (eleven years ago) link

I loved that caveman bf loved the eyebrows!

Yeah, I dunno, at 24 I was living in a depressing apartment by the Interstate, chain smoking out my window every night, posting to ILX all the time; I never dated (or fucked) anyone, and all my friends were dudes who lived in a warehouse. I also had a pretty good job. I've always felt pretty sure of myself as an adult. I guess maybe this is just another illustration about how adolescence keeps being extended further and further into one's 20's and 30's.

homosexual II, Tuesday, 8 May 2012 17:40 (eleven years ago) link

i had a good respectable job at that point in my life too and a decent apartment and a cat and was taking a semi-self-imposed break from relationships/dating, but was def still figuring out who i was and being somewhat reckless (tho i thought reasonable) with my feelings and my self-expression. mostly worked, read, went dancing, rode my bike, went to shows, spent time on the internet (pre-ilx!). i don't think of that time as an extension of adolescence.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 8 May 2012 17:51 (eleven years ago) link

maybe what relating to this show comes down to is one's sense of humour? (which is something that just forms, earlier in life, imo, and is what it is, no shame/judgment)

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 8 May 2012 17:54 (eleven years ago) link

My reality was probably already more day job/boring outside of work in my early 20s post-college, but I knew a lot of people who lived lives fairly close to the characters in the show. Some of the socially awkward bits ring true, too.

mh, Tuesday, 8 May 2012 18:00 (eleven years ago) link

Me @ 24, 1994 = living on SSI income in Seattle in a shared house (100 y.o. decrepit 3 story victorian) full of serious freaks, drawing a page per day of a weird comic about swamp creatures, getting a small time grant to self-publish it, lots of close female friends but ~still a virgin~ (for another year), hours of operation 10am-2am.

I guess fairly 'Girls' except without the money part...

Hierophantiasis (Jon Lewis), Tuesday, 8 May 2012 18:06 (eleven years ago) link

the fact that i was nothing like these people at 24 doesn't keep me from relating to hannah

10. “Pour Some Sugar On Me” – Tom Cruise (contenderizer), Tuesday, 8 May 2012 18:14 (eleven years ago) link

I'm not sure I relate to this (though maybe I should if I thought about it), but I still really enjoy it because I'm interested in the characters to a degree now and I like the way it's handling these situations (for the most part).

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Tuesday, 8 May 2012 18:58 (eleven years ago) link

I'm totally confused by the people itt who are appalled by the main characters. Charlie doesn't look good after this episode, Adam's still kind of a creep but kind of charming, but the Girls all seem like real non psychopathic humans.

raw feel vegan (silby), Tuesday, 8 May 2012 19:07 (eleven years ago) link

I have to keep watching so that I can learn more catchphrases from Hannah's non-bf

silby, humans can be appalling

mh, Tuesday, 8 May 2012 19:09 (eleven years ago) link

I don't know that I've ever identified w/ a movie or tv cast outside of Dazed & Confused.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Tuesday, 8 May 2012 19:48 (eleven years ago) link

Which was more about identifying with the sense of place than characters.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Tuesday, 8 May 2012 19:50 (eleven years ago) link

The only reason I mentioned identifying with the characters is because several other posters say they identify with Hannah. I just don't feel like I do. I also don't need to identify with a character to enjoy the show.

I find this show, on the whole, so horrible - yet I can't stop watching it.

Jon Lewis, I had no idea you posted on ILX! I love True Swamp! Like a lot!

I met you briefly at the BK indie con and bought a few books of your stuff but was too shy and generally wobbly (conventions confuse me; i feel guilty for not buying everything) to strike up a convo. Had i known you were THAT jon lewis i surely woulda had more to say.
I will buy your hardcover collection.

john cook's episode recaps of this show on Gawker are really bad. like, 'he needs an editor to tell him to stop writing like that' bad.

Yeah, if you are making it hard for people to side with you against Gavin McInnes, you are doing more than one thing wrong, possibly with your life.

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 10 May 2012 15:24 (eleven years ago) link

I guess I feel like I relate to Angela Chase on My So-Called Life and Lindsey Weir from Freaks & Geeks far more, to draw parallels from other 'girl'-centric shows.

Did you see Tavi's TED Talk?

Yeah it's pretty much the rosetta stone for reading those first 4 issues, LOL. I was horribly ill from ages 17-21 which is mostly how I managed to get into my 20s with maidenhead intact.

(Sorry for making Lena thread about my comics! But feel free to FB me anyone who likes them, I have exciting announcements coming up.)

Late to the game, but watched the first 4 episodes today.

Pilot didnt go well for me, wanted to punch pretty much everyone esp the dudes.
But it got REALLY good with the following 3 episodes, and this last diary episode was like HOORAY now things are happening and things are really funny now.

But forks made a good point wayyyyy upthread: I've found it a lot easier to like this show as a comedy than as a drama or w/e. sure, situations/emotions are relatable but for the most part they're pretty much aliens on another planet to me, lol.

But now that I've gotten past feeling some kind of responsibility to be deeply affected by this show, I'm a lot more cool with it.

Omg @ the Mexican teenager eyebrows. Just, wow.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 13 May 2012 08:01 (eleven years ago) link

^ yeah, that was one of the funniest tv bits i've seen in a long time. loved her trying to have a serious boyfriend talk while still wearing them.

some great direction with Marnie realizing that she can't still be with Charlie, just sticking with her face uncomfortably long

10. “Pour Some Sugar On Me” – Tom Cruise (contenderizer), Monday, 14 May 2012 05:21 (eleven years ago) link

I'm interrupting my own viewing enjoyment to say: do none of these girls own a skirt that isn't a mid-thigh flare thing? It's making me crazy.

That is all. Brb.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 14 May 2012 06:00 (eleven years ago) link

So much awkward. And yet! So many funny things!

Charlie is suddenly more interesting in the Marnie-dumping phase but lol that he can be bought with blowjobs and Marnie is a walking rmde

Hannah/Adam jerkfrontation was awkwardly hilarious. He is so almost-likeable and almost repulsive, it's kind of amazing.

Hoping part of the lynchpin of this is that she eventually stops doing what
everyone else tells her to. It's crazy! Like she wants to jerk off to her dude
& he says no? But then I remember it taking me a long time to own myself so hurm...pot kettle black lol
