Gavin McInnes being a fully-developed conservative douchebag at this point is kind of like the writer/directors of The Matrix seeing that people liked their film and then expanding on and developing the parts people found stupid and distasteful.
Only Vice magazine was not as good as the first Matrix film
― mh, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 19:22 (eleven years ago) link
people who were excited about vice or the matrix in the first place deserve whatever embarrassment they get imo

they had some pretty ok moments I guess

Well, I'm caught up - to the first episode.
like a realistic version of people being bad at drugs like when he asks his gf if its ok to have some opium T
I though that was just he was cautious that he doesn't want to embarrass his awesome girlfriend, whereas she is thinking "Please please do something actually embarrassing so that I can dump you w/a clear conscience" (though that scenario doesn't work for her as she ends up hiding in the bedroom then the toilet from him).
I liked the English girl because a) science shows I like English girls, but also she wasn't Shosanna Mamet and she was graceful when SM kept wittering on about this show that the English girl has already said she has never watched!
Terrible pilot: 1000 postsGood episode: +/- 50?
a) don't know if you notice, that's how things go b) 500 of those posts were from before the episode aired!

The beta males on Twitter seem confused by this “Racial McCarthyism” quote. It’s ironic that the people who use “Nazi” to mean “Anything bad” get thrown off by an anti-communist being used to conjure up something that isn’t specifically anti-communist. Check Wikipedia

it will be everyone's new favorite show and they will forget that they had a problem with it. now there will be east coast - west coast rap wars between portlandia and girls fans.

Saw that funny, self aware post on Gawker - "we're shitting on the wrong show" - that "Veep" topped "Girls" in the ratings. Shows the value of hype.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 25 April 2012 14:03 (eleven years ago) link
"Veep" has an established TV star.
― World Congress of Itch (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 25 April 2012 14:13 (eleven years ago) link
veeps audience is also much more "grownups" who buy hbo, watch in real time, etc
― johnny crunch, Wednesday, 25 April 2012 14:15 (eleven years ago) link
Pretty sure "a name" is the decisive factor. If you recommend some kind of art film to a Regular American, I understand the most common response is "Who's in it?"

veep is also way better than this crapola

good news about oz, eventually it gets so melodramatic + boring that you'll be able to stop watching it :P

JK Simmons as a bad dude breaks my heart
hey guys I downloaded the second episode of this Girls show and it's really all about awkward people in their early 20s not having defined their own voices yet, so this "could be a voice of a generation" thing is pretty much full of lols
I mean, unless the show goes on eight years and characters are still saying clueless shit about STDs and AIDS and shit, then it'd be like the takimag half-hour sponsored by lol white people
― mh, Wednesday, 25 April 2012 14:34 (eleven years ago) link
That is so true about Simmons! It's so weird to watch him in that role but he's really really good.
― wolf kabob (ENBB), Wednesday, 25 April 2012 14:35 (eleven years ago) link
I know, I just love that guy
― mh, Wednesday, 25 April 2012 14:36 (eleven years ago) link
xxpost
that's a good point. the concept behind this show doesn't seem to be designed to age well.

x-post The best!
― wolf kabob (ENBB), Wednesday, 25 April 2012 14:37 (eleven years ago) link
lol, I don't consider it weird cuz it's the best role I've ever seen him in, and when he shows up in anything I think "the Nazi from Oz."
― World Congress of Itch (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 25 April 2012 14:37 (eleven years ago) link
my fave part of Oz was yelling "hey dummy" at the screen whenever dennis duffy showed up
― Mordy, Wednesday, 25 April 2012 14:38 (eleven years ago) link
Yeah well I'm obv late to the Oz game. I had no idea he was even in it before I started watching.
― wolf kabob (ENBB), Wednesday, 25 April 2012 14:38 (eleven years ago) link
Um. Dennis Duffy was sort of hot when he was younger. I was surprised.
― wolf kabob (ENBB), Wednesday, 25 April 2012 14:39 (eleven years ago) link
By the way, keep in mind that the ratings on both shows technically suck. We're talking, like, a million vs. a million and a half viewers or such. If JLD's starpower is not enough to stretch that span even wider, I wouldn't credit her too much for the difference. I think Veep just has broader appeal beyond its depicted demographic. Vs. Girls, which I can't imagine appeals to anyone over 35 or so. Because "LOL fuck these people and their problems, I've got shit to do."
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 25 April 2012 14:43 (eleven years ago) link
if they added JK Simmons to either show they'd have a sure-fire winner
― mh, Wednesday, 25 April 2012 14:50 (eleven years ago) link
I'd watch it.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 25 April 2012 14:56 (eleven years ago) link
A friend is like Morbs and finds it pretty difficult to watch the Spiderman films because hey, why is a Nazi running that newspaper that Peter Parker works for? To say nothing of Juno.

"I have to say that I'm absolutely astonished that, of all shows, this is the one that is being attacked for being too white. I could list the shows on television with all-white casts, but then we'd be here all day. If I threw a roster of the shows that are all white but have a token non-white person who is rarely the focus of any important stories, we'd be here well into the evening."
exactly.

that is definitely true, but to be fair i think some of the criticism of Girls on this front has come from people like me who were more invested in it than in 2 broke girls or 2 and a half men or whatever else is on tv. holding it to a higher standard because we like it. not that that's fair; i essentially agree with her and with the dude who reported on the the arfin lady's missteps who said the same thing.
― horseshoe, Wednesday, 25 April 2012 17:23 (eleven years ago) link
holding it to a higher standard because we like it.
reminds me of when people debated the representation of women in Knocked Up, as if most comedies have women do more than prove the heterosexuality of the male leads.
― da croupier, Wednesday, 25 April 2012 17:25 (eleven years ago) link
i understand that, but there's something slightly...off...about a show that seems to be much more interesting in its representation of young women/sex/anxieties that is created by (and largely written and directed and starring) not only a woman, but an incredibly young woman in this context, and then to say "well, you're much better than everything else about these things you're doing, but you haven't done race properly so FUCK OFF". Not that I"m saying you, horseshoe, are saying those things or being that dismissive of it, but a hell of a lot of people online are.
― stay in school if you want to kiw (Gukbe), Wednesday, 25 April 2012 17:28 (eleven years ago) link
is maureen ryan reeeaaalllly astonished that the hbo show about 20somethings livin and lovin in greenpoint is the one that is having the most stuff written about it
― max, Wednesday, 25 April 2012 17:28 (eleven years ago) link
Girls is less fantastical than other all-white sitcoms - when you start with press about Dunham writing her experiences and give it a look that approaches the real world (instead of How I Met Your Mother's enormous apartment that was leased to a low-level architect and law student to start with), that's going to garner more "why doesn't it really look/feel like the real world then" criticisms.
― Kiarostami bag (milo z), Wednesday, 25 April 2012 17:28 (eleven years ago) link
also because it appeals to the kind of demographic who bitches about stuff online
