Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 14:01 (twelve years ago) link

things have been a little off with the boy lately - he's stressed with school and a few other things and fixating on like...tiny trivial stuff that i do that bothers him. i was contemplating whether we needed a bit of space and then he woke me up this morning in bed with 'i think we should take a break'

so... there's that.

I'm not even sure if it's a bad thing? Except he got really upset once he proposed it and didn't know if he wanted to. part of me feels like the only way to break out of the dynamic we've been in recently is to have a few weeks apart. but i'm not even sure if it's possible to shift the dynamic at this point.

do breaks ever *actually* work? or are they just sort of delusional?

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 14:03 (twelve years ago) link

in my very humble opinion, alex, i don't know if taking a break will 'work' in the absence of frank, open dialogue, which i think is what's needed. i mean, just the fact that he has been fixating on minor annoyances says (to me) that he could be harboring some kind of resentment or holding on to some hurt and it's spilling over into your daily interactions. some time apart might make things easier but it doesn't really solve any of the underlying issues of your relationship. trust me, "state of the union" type relationship conversations are never fun and can be v scary but they are absolutely necessary in my experience.

i think this is serious (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 16:21 (twelve years ago) link

but maybe you've already had those conversations. i don't know, and i don't want to pry into your private life like that. i know it sounds like lame advice but sometimes you gotta talk it out until you're blue in the face and then keep talking.

i think this is serious (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 16:24 (twelve years ago) link

just remember to stick to "I-statements" :)

i think this is serious (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 16:26 (twelve years ago) link

so otm

desk calendar white out (Matt P), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 16:27 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, fair enough. there have been text messages exchanged to that effect, including a rescinding of the 'break' and i think we're going to have a state of the union conversation in a day or two. i think i just need a day or two to figure out where i'm at.

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 16:27 (twelve years ago) link

haha, i hope i don't come off like some self-appointed relationship guru, just want to share my perspective.

i think this is serious (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 16:36 (twelve years ago) link

sounds true enough. have nearly had relationships implode on me because we didn't have that talk.

althea and (donna rouge), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 16:40 (twelve years ago) link

the best part is that sometimes you realize that you're having the same conversation over and over again!

i think this is serious (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 16:46 (twelve years ago) link

He talked me into lunch today and we had a bit of the conversation. Tentatively, going well, especially compared to the totally distanced un-presence I've been getting for a few weeks. Acknowledgment of issues happened, which is new. Clearly, I'm waiting on follow through to some extent but it was nice just to feel validated about certain things. Allowing each other to ha e a bit more space is going to be key, and navigating criticism vs. defensiveness, but I think we're good?

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 20:06 (twelve years ago) link

Sorry for bombarding y'all with unnecessary drama, I guess.

My 7th Day Adventist upbringing gave me a really good understanding of the Bible, which led me to atheism. A lot of people think the SDAs are nuts, but they act nuts b/c they follow biblical law and principles without all the bullshit and pagan influences that the Catholics and governments introduced. E.g., they go to church on the 7th day.

Also, people think they are nuts b/c they are nuts in a way that is different from the majority of Christians.

Am I absent too often to be a regular anymore? I suppose so. I feel mostly like I don't have much to contribute to the discussion these days. Not doing anything particularly exciting and gay. Just living my mediocre domestic existence and trying to get my brain under control. :)

I promise at some point this summer there will be exciting and/or controversial stories to tell. Or not.

According to Wiki, Taco, Berlin, and Cameo all did versions of "Long Black Veil." Hmmm. Maybe Johnny Cash had a cameo at a Emmylou Harris concert in Berlin where they sang it and then had tacos afterward backstage.

which theater, chelsea clearview? if so, to be fair the non-amateurish ones like Weekend end up there also, and it's not really surprising that a minority-cast gay film isn't getting huge press.

that said, i knew i was going to pass on seeing "The Skinny" based on the trailer/writer/director alone.

ugh i'm dying for a non-terrible stateside gay movie to come about, i can't even remember what the last one i liked was past the 90s
