So fucked up! Did they just frog-march her or was there a 'discussion'?

I read this thread from the bottom up and thought the last three were about Jill Abramson.

idk exactly how it went down. I haven't talked to her in person to find out what happened...didn't want to press her for details at the time since I figured she'd be pretty upset and embarrassed.

this was in one of Sac's northern suburbs. Known for being kinda conservative but still. I never knew they would take it that far.

how horrible for your poor niece, vg. it seemed completely absurd and anachronistic when the elderly nuns at my school carried on like this and that was years ago, and they were elderly nuns. (nuns who said among many other things that girls have always to set the sexual standards because boys cannot control themselves in the slightest, and you can only get raped if you allow your muscles to relax sufficiently to enable penetration at which point you are sinning because you obviously must want it to happen otherwise you'd stay chastely clamped up and god is vigilantly monitoring your muscles so even if you claim to be a victim you won't get away with it in the long run.)

Maria Goretti (October 16, 1890 – July 6, 1902) is an Italian virgin-martyr of the Roman Catholic Church, and she is one of the youngest canonized saints.[1] She was born on the eastern side of Italy to a farming family, but increased poverty forced the family to move to the western side of the country when she was only six. Her father died when she was nine, and the family had to share a house with another family, the Serenellis. Maria took over household duties from her mother, while her mother and the rest of her family worked in the fields. One afternoon, Alessandro, the son of the Serenelli family, made sexual advances to her, but when she refused to submit to him because that would be a mortal sin, he stabbed her multiple times. She was taken to hospital, but died after forgiving him. He was promptly arrested, convicted and jailed. After three years he repented, and when eventually released from prison, he visited her mother begging forgiveness, which she readily granted. He later became a lay brother in a monastery, eventually dying peacefully in 1970. Maria was beatified in 1947, and canonized in 1950. Her mother attended both ceremonies.

^ praised and held up as a role model for 'resisting temptation' wtf and sacrificing her life to preserve her 'purity'. i don't think anyone fell for it though.

not all of the nuns were so extreme but so what. and all this 2014 prom dress bullshit is just another point on the same piece of string.

estela, Friday, 16 May 2014 03:27 (nine years ago) link

Are there any male saints who forgave women for violence done to them? Ungh.

ianac, but i went to catholic girls school pre-k-7th gr, and it wasn't until i went to school with boys in 8th gr that i felt the full sting of all sexist eyes-on-u in the way being described here. it was a huge shock. at my school, there was really no talk of boys at all. it was like girls were the only people who existed. i kinda felt like that tbh. i had no brothers or friends with brothers. i knew no neighborhood boys. i didn't realize the gravity of this huge worldview shift for a long time, but i know for sure now that the shift to going to school with boys and the constant eyes on bodies at all times was not insignificant. if i had always been around it, i might not have found it so shocking, but it was new to me. it was a lot to take in at once.

i'm really proud of this girl for speaking up for herself. the behavior of the school/parents/adults in this situation sucks, but she's doing the right thing by talking about it. so at least things have changed in that regard.

And while “forcible rape” isn’t defined in the criminal code, the addition of the adjective seems certain to exclude acts of rape that don’t involve overt violence—say, cases where a woman is drugged or has a limited mental capacity. “It’s basically putting more restrictions on what was defined historically as rape,” says Keenan.

I had a housemate once who was really into these radio jocks called Opie and Anthony who had some thing apparently called "Whip Em Out Wednesdays" ("WOW"). People would put the WOW stickers on their cars and shit. He was a guy who literally bragged about his own girlfriend's "great tits." Once he took her to see Opie and Anthony live and came back beaming with pride that they had somehow spotlighted his gf and pressured her into whippin' 'em out. She left him, not long after that incident, perhaps coincidentally.

Doritos Loco Parentis (Hurting 2), Thursday, 29 May 2014 19:29 (nine years ago) link

*put the stickers on their cars, I should add, with the fantasy that female passers/drivers-by would see the sticker and oblige its command (on Wednesdays). It's hard to come up with a more grotesque image of perceived male privilege than that -- "I, trollish man, by virtue of putting this sticker on my car, am entitled to have women I don't know flash me one day per week. The world is my skinemax, every Wednesday."

I was riding my bike through downtown Boise on Mardi Gras once...this guy was trying to convince a woman to flash him for some beads. She reached up into her bra like she was going to flash him, and pulled out pepper spray and sprayed him in the face. Everyone in the balcony bar above clapped and cheered. It was awesome.

Reminds me of the way a lot of Finnish men celebrate International Women's Day: by buying flowers for their wives/girlfriends/etc... Okay, maybe it's not sexist per se, but don't you think there'd be better ways to honor the day dedicated to gender equality?

Tuomas, Thursday, 12 June 2014 11:42 (nine years ago) link

That's fairly common across the world. IWD has its roots primarily in socialist countries where "gender equality" was supposedly enshrined in the culture so the emphasis was on expressing appreciation rather than activism. It's slowly moving back the other way so it'll be interesting to how the concept develops over the next couple of years.

I'm just catching up on all of this thread/mess from yesterday, but I'm glad to hear this! Posting personal history deets like that is really not something I tend to do (or enjoy), but I have been thinking about those years a lot, and I'm glad my experience was useful to someone apart from myself.
