When you see this movie, kids will believe one day that these turtles do exist, when we're done with this movie. These turtles are from an alien race, and they are going to be tough, edgy, funny and completely loveable.

Here's the thing. I don't get it when "creatives" take any property with an existing fanbase and make a project with alterations sufficient to a) piss off said fanbase and b) make one wonder why the "creatives" didn't just create their own, completely different thing. Like, I don't get it from a business standpoint, even. If you're banking on brand recognition, why make the brand less recognizable than necessary?

Again, though (debating myself here): if Bay had just made a big, dumb movie about random robots fighting, people probably still would've swarmed to see it, and the studio wouldn't have owed a dime to the Transformers rights-holders.

- remember how aweseome Casey Jones was in the movie? I had such a crush on him
I vividly recall a friend introducing me to the (second-gen, kiddie friendly) TMNT comics. He basically turned into Milhouse. "It's great -- these turtles are really kickass at ninja-fighting and they have a mentor who's a rat and they eat pizza ALL THE TIME!"
Why on earth was April O'Neil's always dressed in a yellow jumpsuit anyways? Wasn't she a journalist?(Uh, oh my -- image-googlers be warned: turns out there's a pornographer by that name. Not to mention that a lot of people apparently have felt the urge to draw her being banged by the teenage mutant herpes turtles)
― Øystein, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 22:56 (1 year ago) Permalink
I think April wore that cos she was so sexy they had to put her in the least flattering costume ever. And she was still bangin'.
I discovered TMNT one day in Elementary school when some kid had a bunch of action figures. The first two movies are really fun to watch. The first one, in particular, is pretty dark and gritty. The cartoon was a staple of my Sat. mornings and the arcade games are some of the coolest licensed games ever.
The CGI movie was pretty fun, good times. Don't understand why they are going live action rather than CGI cos frankly you can't top the turtles from the first movie.
― Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 23:04 (1 year ago) Permalink
Also someone who think Bay is sodomizing the franchise must not be aware of "Ninja Rap", the third film, the TV show with the lady ninja turtle, or the Coming Out Of Their Shells musical tour.
― Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 23:06 (1 year ago) Permalink
One other point about the upcoming movie: the OG creators were never sticklers about cross-media (or even cross-book) continuity. Like, there are easily a half dozen variants of the origin story, for example. But none of those veered as far afield as Bay's proposed vision.
Also, for those who didn't know, the TMNT are owned by Nickelodeon now, not Eastman & Laird. Which may go some way towards explaining why (wrt this particular instance, anyway) Bay just don't give a fuck.
― Soggy Cheeseburgers (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 23:08 (1 year ago) Permalink

Ninja Turtles, cartoon on, was never a high-quality piece of thoughtful entertainment (I never read the original comics of it). It's really irritating to me that kids are being marketed the same things their parents were 20-30 years ago. Maybe this trend's gone on for a long time but I never noticed it. Today's children need their own pile of singular inane, commercialized shit to cherish.

The Hollywood Reporter has broken word that the upcoming, live action, big screen reboot of the popular characters has been shut down, with Paramount pulling the plug and laying off the Vancouver based staff who had already been hard at work on pre-production. At issue, apparently, is a script that the studio had no confidence in.

re: that Vanilla Ice cameo in that second movie
In middle school, some sort of schoolyard fight broke (though I don't recall it getting too violent -- may have just been an intense showdown) and I led a chant of "Go Ninja, go Ninja, Go!" that caught on with the group that was circled around watching the fight.
