Had a reasonably serious conversation with a work contact today. LunkedIn (typo, not correcting it!) is basically pointless unless you have already worked with the people you're contacting. And then you'd have their e-mail addys/other contact details anyway.

not necessarily, I never keep those emails people send out when they quit jobs. actually these days people just send out linkedin invites when they quit to people they didn't connect to later.

I just got a job copy-editing a gal's travel book after she found me on LinkedIn, so they're cool bros now in my book.

And now, these "endorsements" rolling in from people I don't even know… what sane person would rely on those endorsements to form an idea about a potential employee, promotion?
I just got endorsed by a guy I know from one of the Razorback messageboards. I'm ready to negotiate my salary now, Google.

A coworker at my newish job told me that our employer really prefers everyone to have LinkedIn profiles. I think I actually made a pfffffbbbbt noise at him.
Also, pro tip, if you are seeking any sort of benefit that hinges on your inability to work, make sure your LinkedIn profile reflects that inability, or lock that shit down good.
― carl agatha, Saturday, 19 January 2013 15:59 (eleven years ago) link

― she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Saturday, 19 January 2013 16:22 (eleven years ago) link
One thing I've noticed about the endorsements is that some of them are provided by linkedin, rather than by the users. Someone just endorsed me for Event Planning, which I hadn't included in my profile. The individual who endorsed that wouldn't have any reason to believe that I have that skill.

my ex-boss recently got a really good job via someone headhunting him on it. i always assumed it was something i'd never use until he told me this.

― Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 1 October 2013 13:22 (ten years ago) link
the networking piece is of secondary importance from a recruiter perspective. linkedin have a great model where they give you a platform to share useful data ostensibly only with people you choose to and then they then sell that data to companies like the one i work for, in the guise of 'premium membership' levels
― Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 1 October 2013 13:22 (ten years ago) link

I just set up an account recently after receiving various invites over the past year. I'm still not really sure whether it is worthwhile or what I should be doing.
What is the protocol around endorsing people's skills? Is it expected as a matter of courtesy or what?

I have received a "X has endorsed you for your skills!" email twenty times in the past ten days. I know they have that thing where it gets you to endorse four people at a time, but isn't that a little excessive?!

I'll confess to doing something childish.
I went on my colleague's LinkedIn profile and it asked me to endorse him for X skill. So, not only did I endorse him for that but I added an endorsement I made up: Groovy. He then got an email to accept these endorsements, but didn't read all of the endorsements, only the legitimate one, and they were posted on his profile.
I did the same to my other colleague for Racketeering, Murder, Drug Trafficking, Abuse, and some other things.
All of us got a laugh :-)
