this is a bad look. it does not make you look aprés ski, it just makes you look like you forgot your pants

also do not cheap out and wear actual tights instead of leggings, because nobody but you is convinced

gnome rocognise gnome (remy bean), Monday, 9 January 2012 19:11 (twelve years ago) link

i have seen too many butt cracks and/or underwear through these tights/pants this winter.

do these people not have a full length mirror?
do they not realize that the material is stretched thinner across their back side?

nagl.

gnome rocognise gnome (remy bean), Monday, 9 January 2012 19:30 (twelve years ago) link

Those aren't even foofy boots, but the offense is compounded by the shortness of that shirt. So as not to induce voluntary blindness in onlookers, whatever you wear over top of leggings should at least cover your crotch.

seriously one of the fundamental tenets of leggings-wearing is that the top must cover butt/crotch
when did this injunction get...lifted?

See, I like this fine if it's leggings + UGGS plus a tunic or a minidress or even a moderately baggy sweater or something. But without something long on top, it reminds me of something maybe the high school dance team would wear.

beachville, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 13:21 (twelve years ago) link

Or ::shudder:: a middle-schooler trying to pull off this look with a pair of Target tights, a hoody, and off-brand slippers.

rocognise gnome (remy bean), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 13:27 (twelve years ago) link

I work with a woman who is a regular and repeat offender of wearing stretched out/insufficiently opaque leggings with shirts that do not cover her hips. She also wears regular old underwear under these items so sometimes you can see panty lines or sometimes you can see actual patterns. This isn't about being on trend or whatever, though. This is just about her personal choices.

gonna give her the old fuquay-varina (Jenny), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 13:30 (twelve years ago) link

I first noticed the worn out/stretched too thin leggings thing a couple months ago on a girl in a salon. I could see her ass, thong, EVERYTHING. I was embarassed for her and sat there for about 20 mins trying to think if there was any way I could tactfully point this out because in the sun it was p much obscene. I decided there wasn't. :(

LOL just noticed that the gurl in front of me in the bus is doing the leggings, foofy boots, croppped sweater thing. The one thing saving her (a bit) us that said leggings seem to be made of scuba suite-like material (?) And are therefore v opaque.

Can we introduce jeggings to this thread? I am unsure how I feel about them, but I HATE the word jeggings. As much as grellow, even.

rocognise gnome (remy bean), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 13:47 (twelve years ago) link

The word sucks, yeah. Last week I saw "treggings" used which I guess was supposed to be trouser leggings. :/

thomp, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 13:53 (twelve years ago) link

they sound like medieval torture devices.

rocognise gnome (remy bean), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 13:54 (twelve years ago) link

Grellow is a terrible word.

Jeggings are tighter with a very narrow leg opening--cut like leggings, styled like jeans in denim-looking fabric--whereas pajama jeans are cut like jeans but made of cotton/poly/spandex and thus stretchy and soft.

I have a pair of Levis that are made of pajama jeans-esque material and srsly they are A+++.

gonna give her the old fuquay-varina (Jenny), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 15:01 (twelve years ago) link

Really? I like the way jeans look, but my wife likes comfortable clothing. Those Levis sound like they might be a good compromise. Is there a specific style or model number or whatever?

beachville, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 15:08 (twelve years ago) link

Saw a girl (late teens or early twenties) rocking this look at the weekend and her leggings were on INSIDE-OUT so you could see the label as well as her bum.

They are called 512 (tm) Perfectly Slimming (for straight sizes) or Shaping (for plus sizes) and they come in various colors and leg widths.

The thicker and more opaque leggings get, the less I hate them. I remember some years ago, though, maybe it was before the leggings "comeback"? When there weren't a lot of versions on the market yet so the young fashion things were wearing tights. As pants. This is probably where my real disdain for the whole thing comes from. And now thanks to the lazy and unobservant people described in this thread, we're right back where we started.

It means why you gotta be a montague? (Laurel), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 15:43 (twelve years ago) link

I don't know, some of the college girls I see near my office building put way too much effort into the rest of their clothes and accessories to really be THAT lazy and unobservant about their tights. I'm fairly certain its a distinct choice in some cases.

I think the leggings with sheer-ish cut out panels by the knees or wherever are pretty cool. Lots of stuff has “perforations” now, but nobody has made cool patterns with them yet.
