First saw this impressive guy in the overcooked William Friedkin film Bug, and then he snared an Oscar nomination for maybe his least interesting role in Revolutionary Road. Have never seen "Boardwalk Empire," but he was a riot as Kim Fowley in The Runaways, and he's been quite indelible in a young-Chris Walken-way in Jeff Nichols' two films, Shotgun Stories and the new Take Shelter. Whaddya think?

I loved him as the young groom bill murray gives wrestlemania tickets to in Groundhog Day.
― Kerm, Saturday, 1 October 2011 02:35 (1 year ago) Permalink
yeah, I saw that in his filmography and have no memory of that.
also, he's playing Zod in the next Superman film. :p

He's a really good actor. Shotgun Stories was the first time I saw him as a lead and he can definitely carry a movie.

He's terrific in the new one, but I really dislike what the last scene does to the film.

i never made the connection that crazy religious g-man was also kim fowley which i guess says a lot about dude's range and ability to inhabit a character.

idk i find him crazy recognizable, v distinct facial features but he does manage 2 kinda transcend it usu, hes talented
― johnny crunch, Saturday, 1 October 2011 03:31 (1 year ago) Permalink
well i think the only two things i think ive seen him in are boardwalk empire and the runaways. maybe if he's not in glam drag he's more instantly recognizable. he does have that human bulldog thing going on face-wise.

shotgun stories is def worth ur time
― johnny crunch, Saturday, 1 October 2011 03:37 (1 year ago) Permalink
haha well apparently ive seen him in a lot of things! what a weird filmography so far.

Shoulda got an Oscar nom for his Kim, if only so the trailer scene would be his nom clip.
He was also pretty sleazy & good in ilx non-favorite Before The Devil Knows You're Dead.

I like Bug a lot, and he's a big part of that. Looking forward to Take Shelter; this thread is reminding me to catch up w/ Shotgun Stories.

He's actually a pal of mine. If you want to see him do something really broad and comic, he's actually funny and over-the-top as a mobster in Kangaroo Jack. Also very good in his one scene in Before The Devil Knows You're Dead and his one scene in Lucky You.
I've thought for a while that he's basically going to have a body of work similar to Walken and Keitel in retrospect.

i was exposed to him in the wonderful shotgun stories when it was recommended to me as a complement to my period of extreme (pre-comedy) david gordon green obsession
can't wait to see take shelter

jeez, I hope he departs from the Walken track around 1992

I also don't remember him in Bad Lt:POCNO, so I'm gonna have to see that other Herzog film where he's the lead.

Blurb for underrated aerosmith:
"I like the guy; it’s not like I don’t like him. He has a very interesting voice, that’s for sure. But I like his lyrics. I don’t know if I’d want to go to a [aerosmith] concert, though. I think I would probably drink too much beer and get tired."--Michael Shannon

I like this guy because he’s like an animal. I like when he starts screaming because he’s got a really badass voice. It’s Isaac Brock, right?AVC: Yeah.MS: I hear he’s kind of hard to go on tour with. But rock’s not for squares, I guess.

But yeah, wasn't a fan if this guy at first mostly on account of not being impressed with Revolutionary Road and Shotgun Stories, but after seeing Bug and now Take Shelter, I'm sold on him. His Kim Fowley was fun too, the very best thing about a meh of a movie.
