or just painful?

gazza, Friday, 30 August 2002 08:37 (twenty-three years ago)

is this a trick question?

Alan (Alan), Friday, 30 August 2002 08:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I say [B].

Sarah (starry), Friday, 30 August 2002 08:41 (twenty-three years ago)

haha gazza was spying on me this morning!! i rescued the razor in question from the bin in order to present myself "clean"shaven to the world!! (it was unused, it had just struck me as too blunt to fuck work two or three days ago)

mark s (mark s), Friday, 30 August 2002 08:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Dud, do to the incredible amount of extra effort involved to avoid pain and odd tufts of whiskers.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 30 August 2002 08:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Do due do, da da duh.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 30 August 2002 08:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Well the thing is...when you go to buy new blades there is too different brands to choose from ...hence you grab a blade that usually doesnt fit...then you have to shave with the old blade...which leads to little nicks on the neck ......and everything just goes downhill from there...

gazza, Friday, 30 August 2002 08:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Blades-the great rip off.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 30 August 2002 08:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Well boys the answer lies with waxing strips.

Ow ow ow I can recommend having a few DRINKS before waxing. It really does help.

Sarah (starry), Friday, 30 August 2002 08:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Deffinately dud - more cuts, more rash, more leftover bits.
I had a beard of convenience for years and now find shaving to be a big dud generally. I have thick, black beardy hairs and should probably shave twice a day, as it is I shave about twice a week.
Does anyone use an electric shaver? are they any good?

Simeon (Simeon), Friday, 30 August 2002 08:57 (twenty-three years ago)

sarah:maybe if you are removing hair from oh-so-easy legs. but CHINS and FACE are a different box of frogs. i think we've done the shaving legs v face FITE before, though

Alan (Alan), Friday, 30 August 2002 08:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Ive tried the Beard Thing - but they too become high maintenance very quickly! And plus girls wont kiss you because they say your face is all scratchy!

gazza, Friday, 30 August 2002 09:01 (twenty-three years ago)

not only do they say that, it is also true. which goes to show that girls can say things that aren't lies.

Alan (Alan), Friday, 30 August 2002 09:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom to thread! Yes laydeez, the beard is BACK!

Emma, Friday, 30 August 2002 09:03 (twenty-three years ago)

If you have a beard you must go out with a girl with an itchy face. Say a girl with chicken pox - then she'll be all over you.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 30 August 2002 09:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I often have a beard...can any hip people tell me when beards are likely to be back in fashion? I know that some members of the Beta Band have beards......does this mean that I can go out in public safely now and still appear hip or are beards already passe' ?

gazza, Friday, 30 August 2002 09:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Maintain your beard through the vaguaries of fashion, as I have.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 30 August 2002 09:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Shaving legs with razor when hung-over = dud dud dud. Legs go all goosebumpy due to hang-over and tiredness and razor chops them up and legs end up red speckledy mess. Ouch.

toraneko (toraneko), Friday, 30 August 2002 09:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I've been shaving with a dull razor for about a week now. Oddly, I seem to have gotten past the worst of it, and now it seems to be going quite while.

DeRayMi, Friday, 30 August 2002 14:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I've been using the same mach 3 blade for ages now and it's much gentler on my baby soft face than it was when it was fresh and cutting me to shreds.

chris (chris), Friday, 30 August 2002 15:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Dud, of course. What's next? "Slipping on ice: Classic or Dud?" "Waking up and finding out that there's no milk for your cereal: Classic or Dud?"

Christine "Green Leafy Dragon" Indigo (cindigo), Friday, 30 August 2002 15:07 (twenty-three years ago)

How often do people change their blades? I find my Mach3 lose their, uh, edge after about 3 shaves which is unfortunate as they cost a stupid amount of money.

It's a scam, surely.

Clive, Friday, 30 August 2002 16:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I change mine about weekly. I only use a single injector blade. I am still shaving with the same razor holder I started using when I was a teen. One of these days, it is going to snap and I am going to shave off the side of my face as the blade slips.

DeRayMi, Friday, 30 August 2002 17:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I ahve a friend whose mother wont allow him to use any sort of razors, he ALWAYS wax

Zac, The Black Power Ranger (vicc13), Friday, 30 August 2002 17:40 (twenty-three years ago)

surely the beard is less scratchy than nightly stubble?

bob zemko (bob), Friday, 30 August 2002 18:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Has anyone tried this dude's method for allegedly preserving and refreshing fancy-pants disposable blades?

Comments here are intriguing, too:

iirc noted ilxor ice cream has posited some pretty impreesive methods in the past

"It's far from 'lol' you were reared, boy" (darraghmac), Thursday, 29 July 2010 15:38 (fifteen years ago)

Gonna try that arm thing - Mach III Turbos are great but they aint cheap.

If the arm thing doesn't work I've heard these are good - a silicon strip sharpener that claims to get you 150 shaves per razor: http://www.mankind.co.uk/RazorPit-Razor-Blade-Sharpener-PRODRPPS1/

shakiraghmac (onimo), Thursday, 29 July 2010 15:43 (fifteen years ago)

I cleane mine with an old toothbrush after every shave, but mineral oil is the stuff to use after drying them i think?

"It's far from 'lol' you were reared, boy" (darraghmac), Thursday, 29 July 2010 15:50 (fifteen years ago)

one month passes...

FWIW, I started using a new razor the day after my post, one of those five-blade Gillette monsters (it was free), and using this arm method I'm still on the same cartridge. I have a pretty rough beard, so this may be some sort of record. At the very least, it's a financial boon. Also, whether it's the method or merely the better designed blade, I have yet to draw blood, even a little bit, which sort of baffles me. I welcome the development, though.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 21:25 (fifteen years ago)

the arm thing didn't really work for me, but i wasn't super conscientious about it. i'm down to my last cartridge and yet couldn't bring myself to buy more yesterday, even the store brand knockoffs are such a ripoff.

terrible

janice (surm), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 21:33 (fifteen years ago)

the arm thing has done nothing for me. cleaning them dry with an old toothbrush still the top tip from experience

k¸ (darraghmac), Thursday, 2 September 2010 10:45 (fifteen years ago)

I've heard what causes razor blades to get dull is not the act of shaving but the micro-oxidization of the metal that occurs when you put it away wet. people recommend storing cartridges in alcohol or mineral oil to prevent that. never put your cartridges away wet.

shorn_blond.avi (dayo), Thursday, 2 September 2010 10:59 (fifteen years ago)

while it is true that the act of shaving has an effect on the shaved, it is also observed that the act has an effect of the shaver themselves

-_-

k¸ (darraghmac), Thursday, 2 September 2010 11:01 (fifteen years ago)

The arm technique works for me, maybe because I have such leathery skin?

Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Saturday, 4 September 2010 08:23 (fifteen years ago)

people recommend storing cartridges in alcohol or mineral oil to prevent [oxidation].

yup. dry cartridges.

having taken an actual journalism class (contenderizer), Saturday, 4 September 2010 08:45 (fifteen years ago)

Storing in mineral oil not only started damaging the non-metal parts of the cartridge, but left the blades almost unusably slimy. So I'll stick to the am-sharpening and maybe just wipe down the blades with the oil. Or just drying the blades well on a towel.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 11:52 (fifteen years ago)

try rubbing alcohol instead

acoleuthic, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 12:02 (fifteen years ago)

I mean I wouldn't want to say for certain who has more working follicles but my money's on the Irishman

acoleuthic, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 12:13 (fifteen years ago)

ok, dayo-

lj and i are playing the same sport (competing for the same species/gender/sex) but as the tastes required from our desired parnters seem not to overlap it would seem akin to playing in different divisions ( we won't be in direct opposition too often)

if we end up fighting over someone at the next FAP you could describe it as a 'cup knockout'

ps we are both likely rubbish at this sport

k¸ (darraghmac), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 12:14 (fifteen years ago)

ps all love for toms a-d

Ah but I shave my head (often with a blunt razor it must be admitted) so I've more follicles than you prob'ly think

eleven years pass...

anyone ever get a whole package of blunt blades?

mookieproof, Sunday, 31 July 2022 21:42 (three years ago)

Only when I bought some blades from a Amazon re-seller. I suspect they were fake.

I had similar problems with floss-sticks from Amazon ( for some unknown reason it is difficult to get hold of decent floss-sticks in the shops here in the UK - just crappy Boots own brand and the like) .

Luna Schlosser, Sunday, 31 July 2022 22:08 (three years ago)

fake Gillette blue blades in China, at least three times, like cut out tinfoil.

link.exposing.politically (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Sunday, 31 July 2022 22:08 (three years ago)

i've had most of a package go bad due to being in an apartment with humidity issues. they weren't visibly corroded but had definitely lost their sharp cutting edge.

circles, Sunday, 31 July 2022 22:12 (three years ago)

yeah this was from an amazon reseller

they *look* nice but i could probably have used my previous blades for months before they got this bad on first use

kinda respect the hustle but i don't quite understand the economics
