I think this show is great but I've only seen two episodes. Other opinions?

and Baby Blues and secret cartoon network shame etc.

would you mind if i talked about something different? i am jealous of people who have actual FILM movies of their childhoods. i am borderline-appropriate age, but i think there's only one of me. i find them very beautiful. this is making me think of 'myth of fingerprints' - disregard the pitiable aspect of a father only able to successfully relate to his children as memories from 20 years past - they are still beautiful images, do you know what i mean

Baby Blues should not be part of adult swim.
Home Movies however, is fucking hilarious.

I'm waiting for Baby Blues Brothers.

It's that episode that I've seen 472 times where the main family is considered hella bold and at the end the neighbours refer to "the leader" and it is such annoying pointless slapstick shit.

naked as sin (naked as sin), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 01:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

Well not so much slapstick as uhhhhhhhh real self-destruction i think. is there going to be another series of home movies or is there already one?

naked as sin (naked as sin), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 01:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

I really yearn to see that episode again where at the party Jason gets decadent with chocolate treats and at the end comes out to Brendan and Melissa and apologises for his actions.

There are heaps of me, mostly when I am doing something horrible like singing the Titanic theme song really loudly and very off key into one of those echo microphones things at age 6, or playing golf naked or something.

If I remember correctly, Home Movies used to be on primetime UPN, with Paula Poundstone (pre-craziness) as...Paula. I'm glad it found a new home. It is one of the few shows on that cracks me up. I remember the episode where Jason was telling Brendon and Melissa about his many health problems, among them, "When I pee, it feels like there's rice in it." One thing about the show that other shows could take a lesson from is realistic dialogue. In particular, the characters frequently interrupt each other or say things at the same time, instead of one person saying his lines, then the next, then the next...it seems very natural to me. Also, it looks like they got a new Squigglevision animation program (before: Commodore 64. now: Amiga).

Paula Poundstone (pre-craziness)

Elaborate, please.

I really like how Brendon idly amuses himself when people are talking to him.

naked as sin (naked as sin), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 03:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

Someone else does the voice of Paula in the later (new to Cartoon Network? I have no idea) episodes -- which I actually like better, now that I've seen a bunch of them. It's kind of like with the Simpsons; the show got funnier when it stopped explaining itself.

The Coach is possibly my favorite character -- which is why the moth episode of Aqua Teen Hunger Force is my favorite (he does the voice).

And as someone said up there, Sealab blows everything else away. That show was one of the reasons I upgraded from basic (i.e. broadcast + Weather Channel) cable.

I still have not gotten to see the Guitarmaggedon episode!! My roommate and girlfriend watched it while I was at rehearsal, laughing uproariously while not thinking to tape it.

They've been pretty brilliant lately, esp. last week's with the Coach McGuirk as lifeguard and insane headwound man/Brendan with ADD stuff. I also love the one where Brendan, Melissa, and Jason are split up for a weekend and communicate by walkie talkie, and it turns all Tarantino at the end (Melissa firebombs the Fairy Princess headquarters and they all escape to a flamenco guitar soundtrack and go out for drinks w/Coach McGuirk, genius!).

Oh and Baby Blues seemd pretty crap, just like every other 1/2 hour show that they stick after Home Movies and before Sealab (Sealab used to be the best thing going, but I think it's been pre-empted by Aqua Teen lately).

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 04:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

(Sorry about going off-topic...)

Paula Poundstone (pre-craziness)
Elaborate, please.

http://www.kansas.com/mld/kansas/entertainment/4549909.htm
excerpt:
Poundstone lost custody of two foster children and three adopted children after she was charged in June 2001 with three felony counts of lewd conduct with a child.

She pleaded no contest on Sept. 12 to a felony charge of child endangerment and a misdemeanor count of injuring a child in a deal in which prosecutors dropped sex charges against her. Her lawyers have said the endangerment charge stemmed from Poundstone driving drunk with her children in the car.

By "craziness" I meant "crazy media whirlwind," not "Paula is insane."

Anyone else miss Dr. Katz?

(the original) Science Court > Dr. Katz > Home Movies, but they're all great.

The revamped Science Court is obv the worst of all, granted, they revamped it for kids under 10 or whatever.

Just saw this one, this morning: Melissa's on-stage freakout about eating kiwi is adorable/hilarious. Pretty much all of her "dramatic" moments steal the show for me -- e.g. saving McGuirk from drowning and then banging him repeatedly in the chest shouting "breathe! breathe!"

I don't know how I never watched more of this -- I think it just made me miss Dr. Katz, so I'd avoid it -- but it's so terrific.

I've really come around on this show; it never ceases to crack me the fuck up.

(I think I prefer Metalacolypse though, even if I'm terrified by the idea of it expanding to half an hour.)

the episode where mcguirk starts collecting swords is maybe the funniest episode of anything

Lamp, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 19:53 (fourteen years ago) link

lol kind of want to start of home movies secondary characters poll just as an excuse to hunt down more fenton muley clips

Lamp, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 19:56 (fourteen years ago) link

just a truly fucking creative cartoon. the in-episode movies brendan comes up with are worth it alone...but as mentioned above, the dialogue is more realistic and off-kilter.

they never had to create real outlandish scenarios for comedy.

I find it funny that Fenton's voice went from deep to really high pitched over time.

Somehow I caught this episode last night too. Great kiwi moments. I think I liked the part with McGuirk singing in the car the best (I had real laughter). My little sister went to Harvard this summer on some high schooler invitation thing. She said one of the classes was being taught by the guy that did the voice of this guy on Home Movies - acting classes I think. She should of taken that class.
