I once hallucinated that I was flying while I was standing in the photocopy room one morning: caffeine awesomeness

VegemiteGrrl, Monday, 28 March 2011 18:22 (thirteen years ago) link

Once I drank a whole pot of coffee after five days without -- also ate about 4 or 5 donuts. I felt like I would spontaneously liquefy and coat the inside of the car I was riding in -- but in a good way.

summer of '07: working third shift, getting close to no sleep on the weekends, drinking that Orange Halo tie-in Mountain Dew...

Sunday morning I always had to take my friend home; he lived about an hour away. After drinking two of those Mt. Dews it always felt like my tiny purple car had somehow grown. Or perhaps I had shrunk...

Absolutely. While buzzing on my usual weekend drink of choice (gin + sugar-free Amp energy drink) I frequently come to the realization that HOLY SHIT THIS IS DEFINITELY THE BEST CECIL TAYLOR RECORD I'VE EVER HEARD OUT OF THE 30+ THAT I OWN...NO WAIT, THIS OTHER ONE IS THE BEST.

We get novocaine injections here or something. I mean instead of nitrous. Kind of feels like you've been hit in the face with a plank of wood - numb for hours and then ow-ow-ow pins & needles.
I don't miss my old IT helpdesk job where I survived on instant coffee made with two spoonfuls of coffee and three sugars per mug. 4 or 5 of those a day really puts you out there. I recall one time that a salesman thought it would be a good idea to hide the big catering size jar of coffee - three technicians suffering caffeine withdrawal nearly strung him up. Also there was the incident where someone brought in chocolate coated coffee beans. A colleague did too many and was giggling like a maniac all afternoon.

My dad bought me a bag of - not even chocolate covered coffee beans - chocolates shaped and flavored like coffee beans. I figured that since they didn't have any actual beans in them, they were decaf and I ate the enttire bag (given to me in one of those massive cappuchino cups) in one sitting. The unsettling realization that they were caffienated happened an hour or so later and I didn't get to sleep until the next afternoon.

kkvgz, Monday, 28 March 2011 20:28 (thirteen years ago) link

And I had to take a midterm in the morning. I know lots of people like to pull all-nighters and study before a mid-term, but I was firmly in the "go to bed at 8 the night before and have a healthy breakfast" camp.

kkvgz, Monday, 28 March 2011 20:30 (thirteen years ago) link

O man never take an IT persons caffiene away, there will be blood.

I once spent anentire afternoon downing cappucinos with a friend after breaking up with a horrible bf. The combination of caffiene overload and RELIEVED FREEDOM went to my head so much I had to drink some gin to calm down.

Borads of Candida (Trayce), Monday, 28 March 2011 20:39 (thirteen years ago) link

IIRC most of the helpdesk team went out and got completely drunk that night so that we'd come down enough to get some sleep. Next day the place had the atmosphere of an old people's day care centre.

I don't know what the fuck. Maybe it's the different brand of coffee I bought from the grocery store. Maybe I'm using an incorrect proportion when brewing. But I am jacked up. Nightmares the last few nights. Eyes wide open. Feel like I'm about to have an aneurysm.

The thing to do is to develop an amphetamine habit in college, then quit, but still retain a high tolerance/numbness almost to caffeine. I call this the "college method."

I quit yerba mate after Sanpaku posted some convincing studies showing links to cancer.

Mate never made me feel like this though. It was a really clean buzz for some reason.

how's life, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 13:36 (ten years ago) link

i've read that it has more to do with the way it is cured and the way it's normally made (multiple steepings, drank at very hot temps). if it actually was a serious cancer risk wouldn't we hear of a cancer epidemic among uruguayans?

clouds, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 13:46 (ten years ago) link

Here is the link to a study that shows it's not about whether the drink is hot or cold. He links to other studies about yerba mate elsewhere in the thread.

Kindly tolerate this quote at length:

The “mental-energizing” effects of caffeine reflect its ability to inhibit certain cellular receptors in the brain which ordinarily are activated by the natural metabolite adenosine. Via interaction with the A2A form of adenosine receptor, caffeine has the potential to exert anti-inflammatory effects on the brain, dampening the activation of microglia, supporting the protective function of astrocytes, decreasing production of beta amyloid, and warding off some of the adverse effects of beta amyloid on neuronal synapses and cognitive function. Indeed, most though not all recent epidemiological studies find that people who have made heavy use of coffee for a number of years are at decidedly lower risk for cognitive decline and AD as they age. In one provocative Finnish study, people who drank 3-5 cups of coffee daily in midlife were about two-thirds less likely to develop dementia as they aged. One recent prospective study examined blood caffeine levels in elderly subjects with mild cognitive impairment, and found that caffeine level dose-dependently predicted risk for development of dementia over the next 4 years – none of those in the highest bracket of blood caffeine became demented over this time. Other recent epidemiology on coffee points to heavy coffee drinkers as being at reduced risk for mortality from a host of disorders, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, infections, injuries, and accidents; some of this protection might stem, not just from caffeine, but from the phytochemical antioxidants in coffee. In light of current evidence, it may be smart to drink about as much coffee as you can, consistent with getting appropriate restful sleep and the concurrence of your physician.

Me So Hormetic (Sanpaku), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 15:31 (ten years ago) link

OTOH, the largest study on coffee drinking and mortality to date found that 4-5 cups daily is the "sweet spot".

My tolerance for caffeine seems to have gone way up in the last six months. Now normally I only have like a can of Red Bull or similar a day, so this is not my regular daily consumption, but on Friday I had a 250ml can of Red Bull on the way to work, a 330ml bottle of Lucozade at lunch, and a 500ml can of Relentless on the way to the bus station after work. The funny thing is that I didn't even realise until Saturday morning when I totalled it up, and the caffeine hadn't even pierced the dull exhaustion I feel at my shitarse IT Support job most days.

I have a couple of times in the last two years. There are all kinds of warnings about headaches from caffeine withdrawal but I didn't notice any effects. Someone at work was talking about how they drink a small can of Red Bull and basically don't feel any different while one of their colleagues reported getting the jitters from the same amount of caffeine. Certainly I am a long way from where I was upthread five years ago - drinking a weak Red Bull knock-off and a coffee and feeling like I'm stuck to the ceiling? Not any more. Although I have to say that the Monster Energy has a pleasant light background buzz. Pity that it tastes like my anti-dandruff shampoo smells.
