The miniskirt rain poncho and no socks look is totally bonkers tho... and I love that the second ensemble in the line-up is basically unfilmable.

is Tom Brown designing for them now? looks like him

the tune is space, Monday, 7 March 2011 06:26 (thirteen years ago) link

Also that jacket in the first one is too small for the model, it looks weird and like he's slightly hunching/sucking in his gut. Doesn't help sell the look.

thom browne has been doing the shrunken suit for a good long while now; i'm personally more troubled by the 2" cuff on the pants

Is Photoshopping different clothes onto models a thing now with even high-end retail? Brooks Brothers could only afford to hire this guy for one shot?

boots get knocked from here to czechoslovakier (milo z), Monday, 7 March 2011 16:45 (thirteen years ago) link

oh good its another episode of "ilx on mens fashion"

max, Monday, 7 March 2011 16:51 (thirteen years ago) link

I guess thom browne's thing is making you look like a little schoolboy whose growth spurt just hit, making their clothes look slightly too small (cuff length wise, and cut-wise). The trouble is that the "too tight" thing is very precarious- if you're totally fit with no gut at all, you can rock this and it is cute, though if you have big shoulders or chest it becomes comical- but for most guys? sorry but it just makes you look fat (not dissimilar to the "shrunken sweater" effect that you used to see on every indie kid ever- works if you weigh 120 lbs, but on most dudes it isn't pretty)

the tune is space, Monday, 7 March 2011 17:06 (thirteen years ago) link

ugh for real xp

besides the tight fit - which is pretty much thom browne for years & years now -- is there anything really objectionable about these clothes or is this just "lol poncho"?

tangelo amour (elmo argonaut), Monday, 7 March 2011 17:07 (thirteen years ago) link

so what you're saying is that clothes designed to go on models look terrible on non-models

mind = blown

xp: the pattern clash in that second picture is really not my thing at all, also "lol poncho"

goth barbershop quartet (DJP), Monday, 7 March 2011 17:08 (thirteen years ago) link

Can't see the tuxedo/no socks/poncho look really catching on.

goth barbershop quartet (DJP), Monday, 7 March 2011 17:09 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah the shrunken jacket is hard to pull off but the shortened sleeves and pants look great imo - i like the exaggerated cuff too - it makes you look taller/leaner imo & is visually interesting. + a good excuse to wear nice, bright socks.

female nube (Lamp), Monday, 7 March 2011 17:09 (thirteen years ago) link

like if you want to lol @ thom browne u should really check the astronaut suits

and I get the sockless look is supertrendy (recently read about dudes wearing ballerina socks to get the sockless look in winter lol) but that's just styling, u can wear socks if u want

tangelo amour (elmo argonaut), Monday, 7 March 2011 17:11 (thirteen years ago) link

haha ive just been using the cold weather as an excuse to wear interesting looking socks that play off w/e jacket or shirt that im wearing, as much as like(d) the no socks thing in warmer weather.

female nube (Lamp), Monday, 7 March 2011 17:14 (thirteen years ago) link

besides the tight fit - which is pretty much thom browne for years & years now -- is there anything really objectionable about these clothes or is this just "lol poncho"?

The sleeves, the legs, the patterns, the tight fit, the pancho, the schoolboy-investment banker look... really, there's nothing about these clothes that isn't objectionable.

Even on a super-fit model, they look terrible.

and if this relatively tame pattern-mixing is actually offensive to you then i hope for your sake you don't ever see an etro lookbook because you'd probably collapse

tangelo amour (elmo argonaut), Monday, 7 March 2011 17:36 (thirteen years ago) link

whatever, i think these looks are actually pretty smart if a little precious & trendy

but they could definitely be improved with tophats

max, Monday, 7 March 2011 17:40 (thirteen years ago) link

See, "precious and trendy" is pretty much the definition of 'not my thing.'

boots get knocked from here to czechoslovakier (milo z), Monday, 7 March 2011 17:53 (thirteen years ago) link

"so what you're saying is that clothes designed to go on models look terrible on non-models

mind = blown"

ok, fair enough to call me out for sounding cliché, but my point is that even as styled and presented on genuine models the clothes don't look that great- the jacket is cute as an object, but it's not particularly flattering or cute on that model, and whoever styled the cardigan on the second look to be only buttoned in the center of the chest winds up drawing the eye to the stomach in a way that doesn't do him any favors

those shots scream "you will look bad in these clothes, because even these uberhot guys kinda look bad in them"

I'm not saying this in the spirit of lol-ing at men's fashion as such, I'm down with precious and trendy and like Vibskov and Jeremy Scott as much as the next fag, I'm just saying that this isn't succeeding on the terms that it sets for itself

the tune is space, Monday, 7 March 2011 17:53 (thirteen years ago) link

i'm not really big on the shrunken fit either because yeah it definitely looks juvenile, especially here -- but browne has done some really great stuff for BB and turned on a younger market to BB -- but this here is really just a rehash of his past few BB collections so i guess i'm not so surprised / confused as others itt? idk

i hate clothes

'growling like dog' and claiming to be devil (am0n), Monday, 7 March 2011 19:28 (thirteen years ago) link

well my approach is to start with the basic assumption that the modern suit is evil and should be destroyed... We need skinny slacks and waistcoats back. Fuck this straight leg w/ pseudo-dinner jacket look that the industry and corporate culture forces on us. The modern suit is ugly and dreadfully conformist by any historical measure of men's fashion. Changing cuff lengths and patterns isn't going to change the fact that suits are shit and that the regency period was the height of men's fashion and whatever is going on now is just a sick joke.

I realize my opinion is highly challenging... I'm not saying a suit always looks bad, I like the look of a well-tailored pinstripe - ie, I thought the clothes in Inception were fabulous. I just personally hate the concept and (usually) the execution of the modern suit.

Threadkiller General (Viceroy), Monday, 7 March 2011 19:42 (thirteen years ago) link

highly challenging indeed

max, Monday, 7 March 2011 19:59 (thirteen years ago) link

i mean, i kinda want to argue but i don't even think i can -- there are countless variations that have happened to the suit since its origin so i'm not sure what you mean by the "modern" suit?

xxp

tangelo amour (elmo argonaut), Monday, 7 March 2011 19:59 (thirteen years ago) link

Elmo - I will direct you to my big ass blogpost I made about this, where I explicitly explain what I'm talking about:
http://zero-era.blogspot.com/2009/09/suits-worst-thing-to-ever-happen-to.html

Obv. I realize my views are out there but I hope by reading that you can comprehend my argument at least.

Threadkiller General (Viceroy), Monday, 7 March 2011 20:02 (thirteen years ago) link

and while i get what you're saying about regency fashion but that's actually when the idea that there is a morally, socially "correct" way of dressing a man originated, isn't it?

tangelo amour (elmo argonaut), Monday, 7 March 2011 20:13 (thirteen years ago) link

okay, i read your post but i still tend to think you are overlooking the infinite variation of the suit -- a pierre cardin beatle suit looks nothing like a zoot suit, american vs italian vs british tailoring, the gradual descent of the waistline over decades, etc etc etc

tangelo amour (elmo argonaut), Monday, 7 March 2011 20:23 (thirteen years ago) link

I look at a business office and I don't see very much variation -- I'm not talking about the possibilities of the suit I'm talking about the situation on the ground.

Threadkiller General (Viceroy), Monday, 7 March 2011 20:56 (thirteen years ago) link

But yeah I did overlook that aspect and I was being a bit narrow-minded and hyperbolic, but hey - that's how you get page hits rite?
