How does Miami work layout-wise? Like is South Beach just a beach and lots of hotels? I'm trying to make a rough itinerary of places to stay/hang out but have no idea what's what. Somebody told me the design district was cool.

South Beach is 20 blocks long: First through Twentieth streets along Ocean Avenue and a few blocks west. The rest of the beach is rather blah.

Wynwood and the Design District, however, are the happening parts of town and are well worth a visit.

Alfred sorry saw this too late but we did pretty well on food. First night we had Peruvian at a place called Chalan - unassuming but great seafood. Second night we are at SuViche Wynwood bc we were at the Rubell. It was fine, not amazing but fresh and the right kind of food for the weather. Third night we are at a place called Cleo which was incredible, not really kid friendly but they were cool about it and we ate early and sat outside so we weren't too inch of a buzzkill for the beautiful people.

It rules here btw.

J0rdan S., Friday, 6 May 2016 13:45 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, the menu had all this corny fast casual gimmicky stuff but the food itself was decent, and I liked the atmosphere -- an outdoor patio with a bunch of porch-swing-like seats.

Should we move to Miami? My wife wants to now, and I've always wanted to leave NYC and try somewhere else myself. Some concerns about raising a family there though.

I must confess that, on an evening walk up the boardwalk, after an excellent meal, following three days of sun and beach and lounging by the pool, in the saturated orange-pink evening light, I experienced a kind of mild ecstacy and near-orgasmic state in which many of the quirks and tics and grudges and angsts that I think of as making up my unique "self" seemed to evaporate, as though my need to hear challenging music or read book reviews or get angry about income inequality and privatization could just be taken by the waves, allowing me to live in an eternal present.

Hey Alfred:

(1) how serious do you think the zika threat is there and
(2) what's it like in mid-late october there?

Just asking because I have seen some ridiculous travel deals through costco. Like airfare for 4 people plus five nights in a nice beachfront hotel plus transport from the airport plus a $400 costco cash card for $1800.

Also is there a time of year when mosquitos aren't an issue? Or are they year-round?

(1) Not much if you're not a pregnant woman
(2) Cooler. Stevie D once visited in October.

Mosquitoes aren't usually a problem! I can't remember the last time I was bit.

One more full day before we go home. Have had a nice stay, got ourselves an apt in North Beach which is less stylish but still has good vibes and a lot of solid Latin American food. Had good Cuban at Las Vegas, a nice lunch at Michaels Genuine Food & Drink in Wynwood and a good but kind of overblown dinner at Kyu, also in Wynwood. Very sceney sort of restaurant with a little too much schtick. Also got to see the De La Cruz collection and gave H some time on her own to see more art while I took the kids to the seaquarium, which was fairly nice. Oh and we hung out at Wood after Kyu where we were about ten years too old and too well dressed from our dinner but there was a good hip hop DJ. Almost made it to Broken Shaker tonight but H got sick. Great weather and we have a balcony where you can see both the beach and the bay, where I’m sitting now.
