is it actually a remake of 28 days later, or does it just start sort of the same?

It is based on a comic book I have never read, and I have been reliably informed that it was written before 28 Days Later.
Here is the thread for the comic, which I'm not reading because of possible spoilers: The Walking Dead: C/D

fair enough. maybe 28 days later ripped off the comic. it's just the whole waking-up-in-the-hospital shtick.

Like 28 Days Later, it steals the opening of Day of the Triffids--guy wakes up in hospital to find the world has gone to hell.

Cautiously excited about this; I read the first 60 or so issues of the comic and it would make easy fodder for four or five seasons. Comic is very good, btw.
If you are interested in the series, stay away from the ILC thread and the book; no idea how close they're sticking to the original storyline but it looks like it'll likely be spoiler heavy.

Very encouraging trailer, love the McCloud-esque vibe of the horseback bit. Given that Darabont worked with the entire film crew from The Shield whilst making The Mist I bet he's got a pretty tight idea of how to direct this kind of thing too.

55 issues? I assumed it was a limited run kind of thing. Is it still going? Would it provide enough material for several seasons worth of stories? I don't really want to wikipedia it in case of spoilers.

I really meant to ask, "does it end?" as in "is this series going to be 5 or so seasons of awesome shit all heading towards a conclusion or is it just going to dither on and on?"
― No Good, Scrunty-Looking, Narf Herder (Gukbe), Thursday, 14 October 2010 05:07 (2 years ago) Permalink

walking dead comics r good, tv show might be okay if made well. one of the great things about the comic was the level of ongoing tension, even if the immediate conflict did not involve da scary zombies. it is a dark future.
― not everything is a campfire (ian), Thursday, 14 October 2010 05:19 (2 years ago) Permalink
one of the great things about the book is that it's continuously in motion. I don't think it's a spoiler to say that no one is safe; major characters die regularly. Stories don't settle into any one setting for too very long.
― Brick Frog! (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 14 October 2010 05:25 (2 years ago) Permalink
and yeah, there's enough material for five seasons, easy. Kirkman more or less wrote them in "seasons" anyway; his stuff is very storyboardy.
― Brick Frog! (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 14 October 2010 05:26 (2 years ago) Permalink
still, very curious to see how closely this hews to the comic. Anybody know what the word is on Kirkman's involvement/faithfulness to the comic storyline?
― Brick Frog! (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 14 October 2010 05:27 (2 years ago) Permalink
didn't find the comic particularly amazing, just seemed very standard zombie storyline. artwork was average, i thought. later eps were improved though.
have no idea what the tv series will be like, but i don't recall any other zombie tv/series other than the big brother feature (which i liked), so this might be rather refreshing as opposed to yet another full on zombie flick.
― F-Unit (Ste), Thursday, 14 October 2010 10:48 (2 years ago) Permalink
The admittedly small number of issues I read didn't seem to either add anything significant to zombie mythology or have particularly interesting characters.
― A brownish area with points (chap), Thursday, 14 October 2010 11:02 (2 years ago) Permalink
But I will certainly watch the first couple of eps at least.
― A brownish area with points (chap), Thursday, 14 October 2010 11:04 (2 years ago) Permalink
I read thar his rationale is not so much to add to the mythology (originally it was going to be set in the public domain world of Romero's first Dead film) as to fill in the viewer's desire to know what happens NEXT, and then NEXT, and then NEXT--how peoploe keep on living in the world post-zombie apocalypse, as opposed to the few days/weeks that a film can show.
― buildings with goats on the roof (James Morrison), Thursday, 14 October 2010 11:44 (2 years ago) Permalink
zombie apocalypse is a great canvas for right wing/nra/libertarian types to express their i-told-you-so-liberal-faggits wish fullment on and i thought the books veered close to this territory too often for my reading comfort.
― MAX NOT FOR MOD (Roberto Spiralli), Thursday, 14 October 2010 12:43 (2 years ago) Permalink
This is my fear about the show as well...I know the comic goes on forever, shows like this don't seem to work when they are completely open ended and aren't headed towards any type of conclusion.
― romoing my damn eyes (Nicole), Thursday, 14 October 2010 12:43 (2 years ago) Permalink
Well, what makes the comic (and in turn the show) so risky is that there is no conclusion to head toward. Most of the planet is dead or undead. What resolution could possibly occur? The only thing I can think of is some sort of "the children offer hope for the future" ending, because what else can they do?
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 14 October 2010 14:41 (2 years ago) Permalink
because i'm pretty sure kirkman has no idea how human relationships work, and everything reads like teenage melodrama. any writer would be an improvement.

― Evan, Monday, 1 April 2013 13:16 (1 month ago) Permalink
Am kinda baffled as to how they could have so little plot for these last six or seven shows. I thought they were holding stuff back for a bloody finale, it was really low key.

It was a damp squib of a finale, still looking forward to season 4 though. WD still offers a lot but has been very inconsistent this season. I suppose the frustration is that it falls ever so slightly short of a really great series. All the right ingredients were there but it just fell short, can't quite put my finger on it.

Still frustrated by the fact that the Governor was back in Woodbury and showered by the time Rick and company showed up to trail him. And they didn't think to ask Tyreese(?) whether he was already there or not before yelling to each other about how he gunned everyone down earlier. Episode could have at least used a shot of the Governor and the two henchmen driving off somewhere all intensely to address their abandonment or general absence from Woodbury that night/next day.
― Evan, Monday, 1 April 2013 21:46 (1 month ago) Permalink

Don't get why they didn't all move to Woodbury and just keep the Gov out.
― Gukbe, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 00:55 (1 month ago) Permalink
Thought this was okay overall though. Solid season. They probably put more faith in our emotional connection to Andrea than they should have, but hey-ho good riddance. Did an okayish job of shoehorning in a theme of killing/not-killing and choices etc and they'll get an A from Moe-Dee for that. Like the general idea of Carl having a fucked up moral compass but pretty sure they'll turn it into sulky difficult pubescence shit.

"Don't get why they didn't all move to Woodbury and just keep the Gov out."
because the prison is more secure, even though shitty looking?
― akm, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 01:45 (1 month ago) Permalink
Well there seem to be pretty consistent breaches at the prison but really Woodbury's got some form of electricity and individual homes and presumably some sort of food source and all they've got to do is keep 3 dudes out as well as the biters who seem pretty well kept out unless a person lets them in.
― Gukbe, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 01:55 (1 month ago) Permalink
I kind of guess that they did it because they don't want it to seem like Rick and the Gang's whole play was to take over the township of Woodbury but it stretches credibility when there are so few Governor followers left.
― Gukbe, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 01:56 (1 month ago) Permalink
Cold blooded Dirty Harry Carl made some good points. Raylan Givens would not have put up with as much shit as Rick et al. have. He'd be dropping bodies with a smile.
There was some great tension in this ep, but it was still mostly wheel spinning bullshit. Agree they gambled wrong that we would be invested in Andrea. Did Michonne know that Rick had sold her out? I can't remember what Merle said. If she did and forgave Rick, that's as stupid as Merle's sudden change of heart last ep. Also, Cutty as slow on the uptake as ever. This was an entire season of people somehow missing what's coming at them in slow motion. On that front, sort of enjoyed the belated prison battle being so brief.
Letting the Gov survive was the worst, because that means he's going to stick around for most of the next season, too. I guess they understand they have to kill protagonists to keep things dramatic, so they need a clear villain to keep the heat off the main cast. I hope they don't bring him back as a good guy or at least a better guy united in the fight against a bigger evil.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 17:15 (1 month ago) Permalink
i'm resigned to liking this show because i just kind of like watching zombies, and it kinda looks cool and is a good escape for an hour, but it's definitely afrustrating, dull and not very good show almost all the time

Yeah Michonne forgiving Rick was a whole scene in the ep, you missed it?
xp
― Evan, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 17:18 (1 month ago) Permalink
Michonne did forgive Rick ... for considering turning her over. But he had decided, she just didn't seem to know it, which is why I was trying to remember what Merle said or whether she believed it.
Occurred to me that maybe show runner wanted to kill the Gov, and the network disagreed, which is why there is no closure on that front. Perhaps they did kill him and just either reshot the ending or cut it out. Would certainly explain why this ep rolled like a flat tire.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 17:29 (1 month ago) Permalink
"why did they go BACK to the prison"
Could just be until they find the Governor. They'd be more vulnerable there until he is eliminated.
"why bring all those people with them when a whiny backpacker is too much trouble"
You could argue that was pre-full-clarity Rick
Just devil's advocating.
― Evan, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 17:30 (1 month ago) Permalink
Oh Josh, I see. Actually I think she forgave him for not going through with it, not whether it was considered/decided. Though you're right wouldn't she assume Merle was carrying out that decision? So yeah I'm not sure.
― Evan, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 17:32 (1 month ago) Permalink
She and Merle did talk about it in that ep - they actually both came to the conclusion that Rick never would've gone through with the trade
― Nhex, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 17:52 (1 month ago) Permalink
BTW, apparently there were some reshoots of the last three eps after Mazzara was taken off the show, so I bet that explains this unsatisfying fizzle of a finale.
