What's this?

Unfortunately, I don’t remember the joke itself, but her delivery pushed it from “ha ha!” to awe. When I commented on it on her Instagram, she credited her husband with the joke.

Feel like Louis hit that wall right as he was doing the "everything's amazing and no one's happy" bit on Fallon or Leno or whatever that was. 'Oh, he's not just playing the part of old out of touch white guy, he is one.' Then you got to add creep after white guy.

Posehn, he's another Mr. Show alum that I love on Mr. Show and not really anywhere else.

Fun fact: he’s been cast as Mal Evans in the upcoming biopic. Or, he would be if said biopic existed.

if anyone hasn't seen Maria Bamford's short lived Netflix show Lady Dynamite it's fantastic and one of the great "how did this get made?" shows of the streaming era

Absolutely

OK, Tarfumes, I guess I'm just puzzled at a joke about Amon Duul II connecting anywhere other than the dustier corners of ILM.

Halfway there but for you, Monday, 20 December 2021 02:57 (two years ago) link

sadly your average American is barely even aware of Amon Duul 1

Just wana say that I saw LCK twice during the height of his powers and he was so boring both times I actually left halfway through the second show. We as a collective culture definitely over hyped him as some sort of genius and he bought into it. He's not. He a boring regular ass standup. He thinks he's John Cassavettes. Also my fav modern standup is the kid from Los Espookys

I saw him around then too...Louie S3 had just come out, so this was definitely his peak. I thought it was okay. I don't really remember much of it outside of that long "it would be horrible to say this...OBVIOUSLY...BUT..." thing. the show had a weird vibe to it. I also saw Aziz the same year and he was much funnier. to be honest I never thought he was a particularly good standup. this isn't jackoff revisionism, I just thought most of his funniest bits don't really work in a standup setting. all the funniest parts of the show were jokes you could not do on stage. in fact on the show I always wondered if the standup bits were bad on purpose, if like the idea was that in-show Louie was actually kind of a terrible comic. he often gets compared to Chappelle but Dave is much more of a natural.

I remember thinking this also, and also thinking this about Seinfeld before then. It took me a while to realize that I don't actually like stand up comedy, since there are many comedians that I find really funny in other contexts (talk shows, acting in comedies, etc.)

frogbs was 100000% a super-edgy Jim Goad/Bill Hicks/Kevin Smith/South Park/Family Guy teen and now uses like 80% of his ILX posts to go "actually this stuff is ...not good ... who even likes this?!?!?!"

Anyway, thinking about this show (which I genuinely thought was one of the best things on television back when it was on) is weird. I always filed it in the same category as Curb Your Enthusiasm in my mind as I thought it was somebody basically playing themself but exaggerating their worst qualities. When I later found out that Louis CK was actually toning down his worst qualities instead it actually made the whole thing unwatchable forever for me, no matter how good it otherwise is. I'm usually pretty good at separating the artist from the art but it just doesn't work with something like this.

the shark jump moment for me was when he’s showing himself frying chicken breasts and doing like an entire meal from scratch while he’s on the phone and juggling various things like classic “harried parent” stuff and i kept waiting for the joke, like he eats the chicken all himself or something but no, it was just to show what a great and committed dad he is

I was thinking something like this recently when I found a Bob Odenkirk stand-up album

the Seinfeld standup bits are kinda hacky but they're also generally funny and not particularly far off from his usual routine. you can buy him as a moderately successful standup. whereas on Louie it all strikes me as being stuff that was cut out of his actual sets because there's never much of a punchline. like I don't think he's a particularly great standup but he's way better than what you see on the show

geez it's almost as if you don't have to spend your 30's defending "Shitty Wok" jokes because occasionally they say something you agree with. and I'm pretty sure I've said a bazillion times on this thread that Louie was super good for the first few seasons & was arguably the funniest person on the planet for a couple of years. but whatever you do you Whiney

(also fwiw I don't know who Jim Goad is, always fucking hated Bill Hicks & Family Guy, only liked one Kevin Smith thing, and stopped watching South Park 15 years ago)

Seinfeld is kind of the opposite of CK to me, I think he hates comedians presenting as the great sages of their day, his comedy is obsessed with observing the little every day minutia of life, he doesn't pretend to want to teach you anything or grapple with his inner demons

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 20 December 2021 16:43 (two years ago) link

I rewatched the first two seasons of Louis this past year. Some of it really holds up! Much of it is forever tainted. It's shocking how much of CK's work hinges on the presumption that he's playing the part of an asshole with the insight of a decent guy showing what assholes are like. I was a very very big fan! I saw him live for like five years in a row and enjoyed his shows a lot! Culture has shifted.

I have never liked Seinfeld, for whatever reason.

Culture has shifted.

Speaking of Seinfeld--remember when a famous guy didn't even have to bother hiding his relationship with a 17 year old?

I'm not really doing that either, afaik if I've ever said anything about this it's the same as the Chappelle/LGBTQ thing - the jokes aren't funny and they keep telling the same ones over and over again, so if they're not bigoted they're trying damn hard to appeal to those who are. none of this has a thing to do with Louie, who in fact was for a good while the model of how to do offensive/edgelord humor in the 21st Century, to the point where nobody really had a problem with him dropping the N-word in his sets as recently as like...2015.

Like, I'm sorry, yes, the trans stuff is ugly and tired, we all agree, but I'm not buying that a lapsed South Park stan subjected himself to like a straight hour of Chappelle just to sit solemnly and stoicly like you're watching The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

licorice in the front, pizza in the rear (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 20 December 2021 17:15 (two years ago) link

that's an uncharitable reading, Whines. most people just watch whatever everybody's talking about bcz FOMO. people wanna have a take about the thing that's getting all the action, so they watch chapelle / the beatles / succession / whatever. plenty of other people also watch the stuff because they like it but I don't have any trouble believing that a dude thought "here's a thing going on, I'll just watch it." I will, however, constantly shame people for this behavior because it is dumb, but that's me.

what the fuck? I don't think I've ever said any of these guys are "not funny". if I believed that, I wouldn't post about them. in fact if you actually bothered to read my posts in the Chappelle thread my main frustration with him is that he's too funny and talented to be doing the stuff he is now! like sure he's not as good as he was back in '03 but he's still arguably one of the best in the world. I watched several of his Netflix specials and thought they were, despite the ugliness, pretty good. why wouldn't I watch this one, especially considering it was all anyone was talking about for 2 straight weeks?
