LOS ANGELES — Hollywood actor Dennis Hopper, best known to one generation for directing and starring in the 1969 cult classic "Easy Rider," best known to another generation as Frank Fucking Booth, died on Saturday at his home in Venice, California, from complications of prostate cancer, a friend told Reuters. Hopper was 74.

Yeah, it was getting to the point where it was more of a surprise every day he didn't die. He was one of the last people I ever expected to turn neo-con in his later years, but I think he half-returned to the righteous path before his illness. R.I.P.

Watching those clips of him in the '50s is amazing. He barely changed at all. He was always a poet, always a little unhinged.

Hopper could always be relied upon to do something interesting onscreen. He was obviously fully engaged and therefore was engaging. It's always sad to lose someone like that. He was an ornament to his craft. (I am glad I didn't have to live in the same house with him, though.)
RIP, indeed.

When my grandfather first moved to Los Angeles in the 1950s he stayed on Dennis Hopper's couch for a while until he could find his own place, get a job etc. Always came across as a pretty down to earth dude.

saw that revival of THE LAST MOVIE at an 80s NFT Hopper retrospective, it blew my teenaged mind at a time when i was just getting into pretentious arthouse movies - i'd never before seen a film where the credits turn up so late into the 'action'. haven't seen it since, but still fondly recall the film's whole existential western vibe, v similar to rudy wurtlizer's early 70s screenplays
also saw in that season OUT OF THE BLUE, which again i haven't rescreened since, but which i remember being a well-acted realist family drama w/ great use of neil young on the s/t.
a recent viewing of the NOT QUITE HOLLYWOOD doc abt Australian exploitation movies made we want to see MAD DOG MORGAN

Surprised there's no Teri Garr thread...This 1965 photo taken by Hopper turned up on my FB wall this morning. If that date's accurate, she doesn't look a day older in Tootsie, 17 years later.

He was in a film with Basil Rathbone called Queen of Blood and that alone places him within two degrees of everyone from old Hollywood.

(xpost) You should definitely seek out Mark Rozzo's book from a couple of years ago on Hopper and Brooke Hayward. I posted about it in the Dennis Hopper poll thread:
...what a gigantic, Pete Frame-type constellation that moment is of interconnections and collisions.
Same point you're making.
― clemenza, Tuesday, 20 May 2025 19:31 (one year ago)
yeah, I heard about that when it came out, maybe I'll hunt down a copy for summer vacation
