man I think if you could see pics of what my hs was like you would kick my ass on principle, there was some goth shit goin down out on the quad nearly every day

Twink Will Ferrell (J0hn D.), Wednesday, 31 March 2010 16:02 (fourteen years ago) link

well half the goth kids in my high school shopped at Oaktree so I am pretty sure there would have been plenty of reciprocal ass-kicking coming from your end

STAY ALIVE USING EQUIPMENT (HI DERE), Wednesday, 31 March 2010 16:03 (fourteen years ago) link

wait--goths are called bats? or do they release live bats?

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 31 March 2010 16:05 (fourteen years ago) link

The Nightmare Before Christmas store in the New Orleans part of Disneyland is goth/nu-metal central these days. Still.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 31 March 2010 16:06 (fourteen years ago) link

FOR REAL THOUGH, GOTHS IN FRONTIERLAND

THIS IS SOMETHING I MUST SEE WITH MINE OWN TWO EYES

STAY ALIVE USING EQUIPMENT (HI DERE), Wednesday, 31 March 2010 16:07 (fourteen years ago) link

Is it common to call Disneyland "The Park"?

And tbh I would have pined for this in high school. Wld still be down with it now. I have enough black clothing to make it happen.

The quizzical look of the large, flowery-dress ldy in the background of the first pic is a nice touch

also could someone explain this dude, he is the first genuinely baffling thing I've come across in the pictures:

What is up with people who are reeeeeaaaaallly into Nightmare Before Christmas? I saw two of these last weekend. One is a cashier at my supermarket and he's got Jack Skelington wristbands, Jack Skelinton jewelry, Jack Skelington suspenders... Is their day all like "What's this? What's this?"

kingkongvsgodzilla, Wednesday, 31 March 2010 16:35 (fourteen years ago) link

It's so they can show their individuality and freedom of mind against people who are really into Wicked.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 31 March 2010 16:37 (fourteen years ago) link

I used to work with developmentally delayed & autism spectrum kids, and one kid, the only way I could get him to do anything is if I sang "What's this?" to him while he did it. He would ask me to do this by saying "dur dis!"

someone doing this with my goods at checkout would be delightful the first time for exactly 3 seconds

He wasn't actually like that, of course!

Abbott, that's cute as hell.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Wednesday, 31 March 2010 16:45 (fourteen years ago) link

So where did a Goth (who probably wasn't called a Goth yet) go for clothes in the twin cities in the pre-Hot Topic eighties? I was more on the army surplus/flannel/things with parts cut off tip which meant Ragstock and Tatters and thrifts.

Bonnie Prince Stabby (Jon Lewis), Wednesday, 31 March 2010 16:46 (fourteen years ago) link

Like I said upthread, a bunch of us shopped at Oaktree and, as such, looked a lot more like Saved By The Bell castoffs than goths. Also we did a lot of military surplus, too (plus I had a bunch of my brother's Air Force stuff).

STAY ALIVE USING EQUIPMENT (HI DERE), Wednesday, 31 March 2010 16:48 (fourteen years ago) link

And then there was black RIT dye for yr ace in the hole.

Bonnie Prince Stabby (Jon Lewis), Wednesday, 31 March 2010 16:52 (fourteen years ago) link

Man, I tried and fucked that up more than once.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Wednesday, 31 March 2010 16:54 (fourteen years ago) link

What did Oaktree sell?

demonic splendor, demonic majesty (Abbott), Wednesday, 31 March 2010 17:04 (fourteen years ago) link

I found a 1993 article that describes their look as "a signature style that now fluctuates somewhere between pseudo-Armani dresswear and casual rapper-chic."

kingkongvsgodzilla, Wednesday, 31 March 2010 17:12 (fourteen years ago) link

if one more person says Oaktree without reference to Morris Day I am gonna scream

Twink Will Ferrell (J0hn D.), Wednesday, 31 March 2010 17:15 (fourteen years ago) link

I don't even remember Oaktree but that description is doing wonders for my imagination.

Bonnie Prince Stabby (Jon Lewis), Wednesday, 31 March 2010 17:15 (fourteen years ago) link

Apparently they placed the first $1 million order with Cross Colours, which from the tone of the article was the beginning of the end for Oaktree.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Wednesday, 31 March 2010 17:16 (fourteen years ago) link

What can ya say? Garment industry was mad real back then. All in the game etc.

how about this; I'll take your wife to Bats Day, you take my wife to the Ring Cycle, win win!

wait no, now I'm talking about wife swapping, that's more of a non-starter than Bats Day ;_; ;_;

"I guess it's a lucky coincidence that all of the clothes you brought fell into black dye and somehow all of your credit cards were canceled after we got off the plane, huh?"

STAY ALIVE USING EQUIPMENT (HI DERE), Wednesday, 31 March 2010 17:44 (fourteen years ago) link

I am imagining the look on her face I I told her to expect Cats day and we ended up at Bats Day and it is an amazing look that I am very happy I am not actually seeing

STAY ALIVE USING EQUIPMENT (HI DERE), Wednesday, 31 March 2010 17:46 (fourteen years ago) link

There's no reason why you can't set up Cats Day as counterprogramming.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 31 March 2010 17:49 (fourteen years ago) link

Bast Day (you get the cats and the goth that way!)

Bonnie Prince Stabby (Jon Lewis), Wednesday, 31 March 2010 17:51 (fourteen years ago) link

I think the confluence of goths and theatre furries at Disneyland might cause the world to implode due to too much concentrated awesome
