Crystal Fairy is a nice little film. Best acting I've seen Cera do.

Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist -- pretty good; I'll take it over Scott Pilgrim, anyway. The drunk friend was great. Kat Dennings isn't exactly credible as the plain Jane who mothers her friend and gets taken for granted, but, you know, movies--I liked her fine, and Cera, and everyone else. The music should have been a lot better. With Chris Bell and mix-CDs, though, I wonder if there's some influence from Rob Sheffield's Love Is a Mix Tape. Unlikely, but possible--the book came out Dec. 3, 2007, the movie Oct. 3, 2008. I always wonder if I ever supply-taught Michael Cera. According to IMDB, he went to two schools in the mid-'90s where I occasionally subbed.

Youth in Revolt (found a dump-bin DVD for $2) was more than a little affected, but not unwatchably so--even Cera's alter-ego was used relatively sparingly. Just like Nick & Norah above, the highlight for me might have been the friend (Adhir Kalyan). (If not him, then M. Emmet Walsh on mushrooms.) For the whole film, I was thinking I was watching a younger Portia de Rossi. There was a great song towards the end when Cera was on the run, but couldn't pick out the name in the credits. I've liked three Miguel Arteta films now to varying degrees (also Chuck & Buck and The Good Girl), and I see he did three Six Feet Unders too.

No other thread for Nick and Norah - what a weird fucking movie. Everyone's in high school but everything about it is more reminiscent of a college movie but then I guess the virginity of the protagonists would be really weird. The fingerbanging/graphic EQ scene, good god.

Cera has a self-effacing Broadway role in Kenneth Lonergan's The Waverly Gallery -- a mediocre, broke painter who doesn't realize his work is being displayed by a woman (Elaine May) who's slipping into dementia... he keeps blaming her hearing aid. Very unshowy part despite his Masshole dialect.

Cera deserves credit for mostly doing weird shit that leans into his oddball screen presence, like TP:TR, Entertainment, and the Silva movies

there's a delightful moment in Tyrel (out December 5th) where Cera, having arrived mid-way into a weekend-long house party, smirks admiringly across a table at Caleb Landry Jones' pasty white oddball character. the crown has been usurped, the sceptre knowingly passed.

Yeah, Cera’s brief moments in This is the End (probably the funniest thing in the film) and Twin Peaks really stood out and warmed me to him again after that unfortunate (can’t really blame him) several year stint as the go-to charmingly awkward indie kid in some not great movies. Sounds like a good dude in interviews too. I like him.

Gira was an earth shaking force throughout a lot of my life. Even New Swans felt totally vital until it... just kinda didn’t. Something to be said for just stopping. That’s not even taking into account the accusation. Idk, I’m kind ok with leaving it all behind.
