the lovely Emma B is moving on from her old 11" Macbook Air.. she wants a bigger screen, with a lot of RAM and HD space and no hassles plugging things in at presentations and conferences

13" Macbook Pro is the way to go, right?

a 13" MBP has no ports that are going to solve the problems connecting to projectors that an MBA has

i would just get a 13" air. everyone should get a 13" air unless they want an optical drive or a 11/15" display.

XPS13 is size of Air 11" but has a high-res 13" screen. Realize this is the Apple thread, and I'm a long-time Apple user, but I think my next computer will be a PC.

Finally, updated iPods were announced today. The iPod Touch gets the same A8 and M8 processors used in the iPhone 6/6+ (albeit somewhat declocked), an 8MP rear camera, and a 128GB version ($399/Β£329). Also 3x faster wi-fi, an improved front camera, Bluetooth 4.1 (the first in an iOS device), and some new colors. Same 4" screen size. Disappointing lack of TouchID or the loop strap the previous gen had. Still, an impressive upgrade and 128GB will be great.

Lee626, Wednesday, 15 July 2015 23:57 (eight years ago) link

128GB? shiiiiiiiiiit nice.

So, um, is the Apple Watch a success? Failure? Both? Too soon to tell? Dead tech walking, a la Google Glass?

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 23 July 2015 14:53 (eight years ago) link

Only for apple would a $1B+ run rate in three months be anything close to a failure so…I'm gonna say it's big.

remember when ppl had tech devices and they were made fun as for being nerds, before everyone had smartphones that are little computers? then everyone had that shit later, arguably when it all worked better and the technology was more mature. feel like this might be one of those things, makes me feel way nostalgic

Upright Mammal (mh), Thursday, 23 July 2015 22:58 (eight years ago) link

also I had a sweet Casio watch as a kid that had an address book and calculator and all that shit

I know of about a dozen or so people with Apple watches in my IT department. Out of 200 people.

Jeff, Friday, 24 July 2015 01:28 (eight years ago) link

xpost Yeah, ugh, I know two tech guys with Apple watches, but I think most of the people I've seen wearing them looked liked JE Bush, i.e. someone just taught them to use the internet within the past year or so.

I will say, not long before the introduction of the Apple watch I started wearing my real watch again, and that really did the trick. It's amazing how often I was taking out my phone to check the time.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 24 July 2015 01:32 (eight years ago) link

I was actually predicting it to be a success and my mind got sort of changed over a very small point that was made in a video review I saw (maybe the WSJ's or the Times' review?), which is that in order to use effectively it you have to look at your watch a lot, and looking at your watch a lot comes off as rude. Suddenly the whole concept seemed incredibly annoying to me, and also it meant that the watch doesn't really save you from the annoyance of pulling out your phone all the time, it actually replaces it with a new annoyance.

five six and (man alive), Friday, 24 July 2015 02:01 (eight years ago) link

Nonetheless, still feel like subsequent generations of the watch could become more compelling

five six and (man alive), Friday, 24 July 2015 02:02 (eight years ago) link

I think the watch will make many billions of dollars over the next decade or so, probably market will grow for a couple years and plateau like iPad sales have, and the Watch's long-term strategic importance to Apple will be:

- China (Tim Cook's favorite place)
- still more supply chain and fabrication refinement learning (Tim Cook's favorite activity)
- product line helping to pay for R&D on low-power, high-density SOCs and tiny high-density batteries (super important)

go hang a salami I'm a canal, adam (silby), Friday, 24 July 2015 02:06 (eight years ago) link

yeah im just not seeing what the must have usecase is, and the screen will never be big enough to replace yr phone, having yr phone in yr pocket is good too, ppl dont aprecite the value in putting something away, same as with google glass

lag∞n, Friday, 24 July 2015 02:08 (eight years ago) link

like a lot of what the watch does is tell u to look at yr phone lol

lag∞n, Friday, 24 July 2015 02:09 (eight years ago) link

Tim Cook for all that he's the white male CEO of the most profitable company on earth probably isn't fucking around when he says he thinks Apple can make stuff that makes the world a better place, probably more honest abt this than SJ was.

I don't know Apple's market share/penetration in the Global South but when ppl who never had PCs will increasingly be having smartphones or smart-next-things Apple won't ignore that opportunity forever just to maintain their high avg selling price

go hang a salami I'm a canal, adam (silby), Friday, 24 July 2015 02:10 (eight years ago) link

it's a cute tiny screen, when I poked one at the apple store I was pleased by touching it, also the display tech is OLED (unadvertised) which again plays into the "hey we can experiment with this stuff for future products and make a bundle selling gold ones to Russian oligarchs" cashflow plan

go hang a salami I'm a canal, adam (silby), Friday, 24 July 2015 02:11 (eight years ago) link

Apple won't ignore that opportunity forever just to maintain their high avg selling price

There's a rather long record of Apple actually doing just that--current strategy of lowering the price of lower tech (previous versions of iDevices) to serve the non-high average selling price. And winning big in China over the past year isn't going to dampen Apple's enthusiasm for a strategy that has made them a top 5 company by market cap. In fact there is significant shareholder demand to continue keeping the average selling price up. Apple is an aspirational brand and it continues to dominate its rivals (Android in the platform, Samsung in hardware) and increase marketshare. Hard to change corporate direction with that kind of momentum.
