Who plays squash? I thought it was something people did in the movies.

Agree with circa. The one-handed thing is super-annoying. Trying to navigate/search for something in Spotify with one hand is really frustrating. Maybe devs will migrate the menus to the bottom? The double-tap-the-home-button thing only works for one selection. If the menus for an app are in the upper-left corner, it means every tap takes three taps (two on the home, one on the menu).

Location of the lock button on the 6 is very bad. Also I need a case bc it's slippery and too thin. Visible antenna lines are a weird touch. Mostly the lock button is a real problem.

Je55e, Friday, 24 October 2014 17:30 (nine years ago) link

You want it back on top?

Jeff, Friday, 24 October 2014 17:37 (nine years ago) link

Only time I've had an issue with the side location of the sleep button is when I'm passing my phone to someone else. Pretty easy to click it accidentally when grabbing.

Having it on top would be a pain. Unreachable in these bigger sizes.

circa1916, Friday, 24 October 2014 17:46 (nine years ago) link

There or somewhere besides opposite the volume buttons. When I try to lock it one-handed, I press the volume buttons or have to hold it in an awkward position.

xp

Je55e, Friday, 24 October 2014 17:47 (nine years ago) link

Didn't they put it there so you can lock it one handed

, Friday, 24 October 2014 17:51 (nine years ago) link

I've gotten completely used to it on the side.

Jeff, Friday, 24 October 2014 18:08 (nine years ago) link

I feel like some of you must have some serious dexterity issues, there is nothing challenging about the lock button on the side other than it used to be on top, wth

Apple silicone case transformed 6 from slippery awkward pita to really great. Still really slender but easy to manipulate for me.

chemical aioli (Hunt3r), Friday, 24 October 2014 19:02 (nine years ago) link

So last week I tried to use my 2009 iMac to make handoff calls in Yosemite and it wouldn't work and I researched and it said it didn't support it so I said "screw you Apple!"

However, for some reason, now it does completely work. I can take and make calls on it.

Spencer Chow, Friday, 24 October 2014 21:33 (nine years ago) link

I bought one of those Spigen slim cases and it also made mine less slippery while barely adding any bulk. The apple cases look nicer tho, this one is a little cheap looking up close.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Friday, 24 October 2014 21:35 (nine years ago) link

Slippery phone is great imo for getting in and out of jeans pockets

, Friday, 24 October 2014 21:38 (nine years ago) link

I got the leather case for the 6 and didn't really like it. I felt like I had to be careful with it and the brown color which i thought I was going to like didn't grow on me. I picked up the silicone case which is much better. It has some grip but doesn't get stuck to my pockets at all.

Spencer Chow, Friday, 24 October 2014 21:47 (nine years ago) link

I have the Tech21 wraparound case, and it's already saved my phone a couple of times from shattering on concrete.

I have this case, I like it a lot:

Also I stuck on of these on the back:

http://www.getnobiggi.com/

I'm not sure it's going to stay stuck on, since the back of my case isn't supposed to be supported because it's textured and rubber/neoprene.

Jeff, Friday, 24 October 2014 23:06 (nine years ago) link

haha, really?

Ive really needs to be put out to pasture. I think all that botox is affecting his brain.

I mean it's like exactly where your thumb is assuming right-handed use, or index finger if left

I've adapted but the problem is that the volume buttons are right where my thumb naturally goes when pressing the lock button with my index finger.

I read something in an Apple forum about making the OS give priority to the lock button when both it and volume buttons are pressed at the same time. As it is, pressing a volume button disables locking.

Pay trip report

used to pay for train fare, let me thru the turnstile, declined charge 2 minutes later
used to pay for lunch at whole foods
tried to pay for train fare again, wouldn't let me through turnstile, declined charge hours later

phil phish (diamonddave85), Monday, 27 October 2014 20:17 (nine years ago) link

the train station technically didn't support Pay but rather google wallet so not exactly a knock on the process. transaction at whole foods was seamless and enjoyable

phil phish (diamonddave85), Monday, 27 October 2014 20:20 (nine years ago) link

supposedly cvs and rite aid dropped out of apple pay and joined some other qr-code-based shit coming out in 2015. Will be interesting to see how much traction Apple Pay has by then.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Monday, 27 October 2014 20:21 (nine years ago) link

yeah from what i understand, the currentC flow is something like:

retailer presents you with a QR code to scan
you scan the QR code
you do something on your phone (choose payment method i would imagine, password maybe?)
you present the retailer with another QR code
retailer scans QR code and the transaction is complete

which is completely stupid and no one will use. that's not even to mention the fact that your bank information is stored on their servers in the cloud

phil phish (diamonddave85), Monday, 27 October 2014 20:27 (nine years ago) link

yeah I'm guessing Apple Pay costs them more and they're bucking, but seems penny-wise/pound-foolish. If you're really against it just don't have a phone pay system at all, don't go all half-assed with something no one will use.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Monday, 27 October 2014 20:28 (nine years ago) link

Actually Rite-Aid and CVS just had NFC-enabled card readers at POS but until Apple Pay launched roughly zero people had NFC payments set up on their phones. People just started using it all of a sudden and it worked.

Spirit of Match Game '76 (silby), Monday, 27 October 2014 20:31 (nine years ago) link

oh weird

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Monday, 27 October 2014 20:32 (nine years ago) link

This is my understanding - banks and retailers hate having to give up money to the credit card companies. Apple is teaming up with those banks to compete against Visa and company, charging less per transaction than usual.
Retailers look at this and say, wait, why should we give Apple anything at this point? Might as well have our system which is essentially a debit card system to draw money directly from bank accounts - or our own store credit cards, of course. So that's what CurrentC is.

Nhex, Monday, 27 October 2014 20:32 (nine years ago) link

It makes sense to them because why change masters from Visa/AMEX/Discover to Apple when you can cut them out completely

Nhex, Monday, 27 October 2014 20:33 (nine years ago) link

Doesn't Visa still get their usual cut? I mean you have to use a normal credit card account with Apple Pay afaik. I thought it was Visa fee + Apple fee = more expensive.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Monday, 27 October 2014 20:34 (nine years ago) link

Like I don't think you're really switching from credit card to Apple, you're just using Apple as a new way to take credit cards.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Monday, 27 October 2014 20:35 (nine years ago) link

Apple fee's not on top, I think the deal-making is working with Apple making deals for a thin slice of the bank's slice of the txn fee.
