prefer a machine to those assholes who order 10 drinks and then insist that everyone splits the bill equally

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 20:00 (nine years ago) link

that said i did not realize the part about QR codes, i guess that could be good

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 20:02 (nine years ago) link

but it has nothing to do with NFC afaict

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 20:06 (nine years ago) link

no that would just use the apple pay app, not the nfc thing.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 20:10 (nine years ago) link

its true it has nothing to do w nfc

lag∞n, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 20:10 (nine years ago) link

the technologies dont matter tho

lag∞n, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 20:10 (nine years ago) link

Honestly it's a lot more chill than "Okay, so you got the appetizers, and we didn't have drinks" or just having your boozehounds friends be like "So should we just split it evenly?"

true but it's awesome when they bring that thing out, it's like you're living on battlestar galactica or something - "now be off with you"

Getting the check/paying at restaurants is long overdue for some sort of technology upgrade. Around here, it can add 20 minutes to getting out of the damn place. You would think it would be in the restaurant's best interest to turn over customers quicker.

I really just want robot servers.

Jeff, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 20:16 (nine years ago) link

I probably posted this here or in another thread, but my brother when he was a little little kid had what I thought was an ingenious idea: a restaurant where the kitchen is on the lower level, and the middle of each table has a sort of electronic dumbwaiter elevator with an animatronic puppet server -- it takes your order then goes down to the kitchen and gets it, then at the end gives you the check and takes your money.

It was a hot pot place

So you'd put in how much raw meat or fish or veggies or w/e you wanted, big order small order

Beer etc.

You could order throughout the meal

Pretty tight tbh

, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 20:51 (nine years ago) link

you know all the food you ate was 3-D printed on spec, right

Having that monstrosity in the middle of your dining table = you might as well run into the woods and eat raw meat with your hands

Yeah there are some places that won't do the sig if it's below like $50

, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 21:05 (nine years ago) link

The most terrible are the carryout places that make you sign

And they have a place for the tip

But it's a carry out place

!!!!

, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 21:06 (nine years ago) link

My five-year-old always wants to push the buttons on the reader at the grocery store. I was about to let him sign the credit thing once, and the cashier said, "No! No, he can't do that!"

I was letting it go, but I did say, what, does anyone pay attention to how close the signatures match?

And she responded, No, of course they don't. But you've got beer on there and I could go to jail for selling to a five-year-old.

pplains, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 21:54 (nine years ago) link

haw

I assume the one place it would ever come up would be in a fraud investigation, like maybe some guy makes lots of false fraud claims and they're like wait you signed for this. But the odds of it coming up seem low, probably vestigial of a time when it was more useful is my guess.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 21:59 (nine years ago) link

the signature thing is more about the lack of adoption for chip/pin than anything, pretty sure it's backpedaling from all the whiny businesses that don't want to upgrade their card reader from the 80s

⌘-B (mh), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 22:00 (nine years ago) link

lol tipping on carryout is def a situation for the tipping thread

⌘-B (mh), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 22:00 (nine years ago) link

cc chips are finally coming to america they cause of fraud prevention

lag∞n, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 22:54 (nine years ago) link

anyway those portable EMV terminal things that are everywhere seem to all be made by Veriphone. Square's coming out with an EMV reader which could be a lot more chill than those things, and I expect that Apple Pay will sort of burst the logjam on new + clever NFC stuff in the US, since there will be like 40 million users of it a year from now.

Most of Europe is chip and pin

America is getting chips but it's mostly gonna be chip and sig

Cause I guess Americans are too lazy to remember two pins?
