I already updated to iOS 8 over the air. Is the OS still taking up more space than it would had I upgraded via iTunes, and if so is there a way to rectify this?

I mean, really, the alternatives to having a large download before OS upgrade are:
1. Somehow have a patch file for changes between versions. Since a major OS upgrade updates all libraries, it'd be nearly the same size, and take foreeeeeever to run
2. Split the patch into multiple install pieces, each of which have a larger chance of failure than the large patch, and it'd make development time exponentially larger
3. Have some sort of phone upgrade kiosk that just does that (which is basically what plugging your phone into the computer for ten minutes does)
4. Have an installer package that is really small, then have it install/download at the same time. Depending on connection speed, it'd either take forever, be really likely to fuck up your phone, or both

Lee, no, it deletes the installer after installation

max and a few others basically made me realize I was less of a man for buying less than 64GB last time so I have the 128GB phone and I care not at all now

thx

It's a disgrace. The update to ios 8 itself is 1.1 gb, yet it wants me to free 5.6 gb to be able to install it on my ipad. Fuck you apple. Fuck. You.

The compressed file is 1.1GB
You gotta decompress that fucker, what are you doing, running Stacker on your phone? No way

⌘-B (mh), Monday, 29 September 2014 23:26 (nine years ago) link

lol Stacker

fwiw while I generally like his design I really hate the look of the color gradients in the app icons (although now that I think about it it's a clever way to distinguish Apple brand apps from other apps)

idk i like the ios 7 style

Black-and-white option in prefs is pretty pimp.

schwantz, Wednesday, 1 October 2014 18:51 (nine years ago) link

did not even know that existed

markers, Wednesday, 1 October 2014 19:06 (nine years ago) link

Apropos of nothing, I am really into the honeycomb app picker on the watch. I find myself relying mostly on spatial memory when opening apps on my phone, more so than any visual input from the icons. The hex grid means that scrolling from one app to another is just a journey across a plane, without the more abstract folder and page concepts adding friction. To get from Fitness to Music I just have to go from here to here.

older guy i work with was complaining about the look of the latest ios a few months ago. turns out he had "invert colors" turned on in accessibility settings. i didn't know that existed until then. trippy.

Seems like a bit of a pointless goof to me -- is there any good reason to use grayscale or inverted colors?

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 1 October 2014 19:36 (nine years ago) link

There's a reason it's found in the 'Accessibility' menu you insensitive loaf

Sorry, I am dumb. Colorblindness?

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 1 October 2014 19:40 (nine years ago) link

Well for inverted colors, white text on black space reduces eyestrain iirc

A contrast ratio of 3:1 is the minimum level recommended by [ISO-9241-3] and [ANSI-HFES-100-1988] for standard text and vision. The 4.5:1 ratio is used in this provision to account for the loss in contrast that results from moderately low visual acuity, congenital or acquired color deficiencies, or the loss of contrast sensitivity that typically accompanies aging.

1staethyr, Wednesday, 1 October 2014 19:46 (nine years ago) link

yeah, the ugly hi-contrast themes are very good for people with poor vision or colorblindness. Windows has always had them too

Nhex, Wednesday, 1 October 2014 19:50 (nine years ago) link

I use inverted colours for apps that don't have a night mode. And greyscale when I come over all NeXT

stet, Wednesday, 1 October 2014 20:26 (nine years ago) link

yeah, that's just the d

after my rant the other day about how much this thread sucks, i think it'd only be appropriate if i bring up a topic that falls in the “stupid shit” category: dock position

thoughts? i thought gruber or someone was talking about it recently. i usually have mine at the bottom of the screen, but right now it's on the right. none of that “hidden” shit or w/e atm either
