I've been using bluetooth headphones recently. But wow, my battery drains fast with BT on.

remember the original iPhone headphone jack and how it couldn't accept regular headphones?

I figured out the reason

Headphone jack: 3.5mm in diameter
Lightning connector: 2.46 mm in height

They could make their phones thinner by 1mm

xp yeah, that was really stupid. if they're gonna do this they should just include the headphone adapter with the phone

The old 30-pin connector was also capable of outputting a digital audio signal iirc

Moving the DAC conversion to outside the iPhone could make sense, much less noisy envirionment

But the iPhone already has really great DAC circuitry imo

And it'd be required if they eliminated the headphone jack

Forcing every headphone mftr to sell both a 3.5mm- and Lightning-terminated jack of each of their headphones would be a cruel and sadistic and gleeful move by Apple

they will sell little appleDACs that people will collect like tt cartridges. check out my ortofon blue appleDAC.

The only way that could be cool is if iPhones/iPads come with an adapter that has a cable with the standard controls on it, with a 3.5mm headphone jack embedded in it. But even then - How do you charge and listen at the same time?

you plug your kinetic charger vest output into your headphones. you are a more perfect human this way.

fwiw with the lightning connector and the last OS, iPhones and iPads became able to use external USB sound cards. So if you have a headphone amplifier at your work desk or whatever that acts as a USB sound card, it works with that (once you use the lightning->usb adapter, that is)

Xpost I already made that switch to the forty buck sandisk player just last month when my iPod 160 corrupted itself for the billionth time. This thing is great, u can replace the firmware with rockbox in like 3 minutes and have a bunch of micro sd sub-libraries in your wallet. Plays any type of file you throw at it too.

will it play my old lode runner saved game files?

Man given some of the new view APIs in iOS 8 there is 100% likelihood of a big iPhone next up

If they don't put out a 5s sized version of the 6 with feature parity with whatever phabletesque monstrosity the market is forcing them to put out I will be cheesed off.

otm, iphone 5 is perfect size. read something that said bigass phones are favored by people who don't want to buy both a tablet & a phone & I thought c'mon we're talking about APPLE customers here

re headphone lightning cable: could this be about healthkit? ie headphones being a thing you've often got draped around your neck taking your pulse and blood pressure and whatev. I guess they couldn't pass that info to the phone via the headphone jack, so if they're going to have to use a separate connection it makes sense to send everything through that rather than doubling up

or maybe jobs put something in his will about hearing the purple chick boot of abbey road in 48khz by 2015 idk

Whenever the iWatch finally comes out of whatever Manhattan Project lab it's in. A watch with a headphone jack looks ridiculous so of course there will have to be some sort of wireless earpod setup. Of course you want to be able to use iWatch with your stereo, so for $35 you can buy a Lightning-to-RCA/mini-jack adaptor, etc. etc. etc. It's not a bug, it's a feature. Why would you sully your iWatch with all these cables?

In re the phone size, having gone in and looked at phones yesterday I think there's just some kind of psychological effect from seeing all these bigger-screened phones that makes the iphone start to look puny. Also I find the 4s screen annoyingly small to read books on and I've increasingly been using my phone as an e-reader. So I think they're kind of forced to do a bigger screen or else risk customers being like "fuck it, I'm switching." At the same time some of the samsungs and htc's are stupidly large, and even the galaxy s5 felt too big in my hand.

I mean the 5/5s screen is bigger than the 4s obviously but it's a pretty small difference.
