I don't think it opens in the UK till February. Looking out for it.

the many things i wld like 2 buy

hmm...I hope it's not all surface gloss, and has some content. The book is an excellent account of the mental 'inner life' that goes on below everyday activities, as well as about loneliness.

Totally fuct-up ending, read the book.

did u like this dr morbius? aside from the ending? i was thinking u were the only other ilx poster that might have seen it

the "moment of clarity" thing was much more lol to me than it should have been because that shot of the owl couldve been lifted and maybe was from a movie where lindsay lohan plays a stripper

the ending is -perfect- btw i mean did u see the suit that he was wearing????

r u saying this movie has an i know who killed me ref even by accident

plaxico (I know, right?), Thursday, 24 December 2009 23:40 (fourteen years ago) link

my theory is that its no accident but: yes!!!!!!

tbqf and rr and h and t i think youd LOVE this movie its "arty" in this wonderful way. the lighting is insane and there is - no joke - exactly one non-gorgeous person in the entire movie

I wonder if just any gay male director, besides a fashion designer, would be casting "frumpy British best friend" from the novel and go to Julianne Moore.

Because of Firth, the film is better than it should be, considering that Ford has warped the material.

Rage, Resentment, Spleen (Dr Morbius), Friday, 25 December 2009 01:48 (fourteen years ago) link

New directors and their penchants for slow-mo and "arty" montages...

Anyway, this was less than okay until it took a nosedive in the last half hour. The novel hasn't an scintilla of sentimentality, yet Tom Ford thinks the movie needs some. Tonally it's just off (and the music is just dreadful). In the novel George's last scenes with the student are funny and tense; Ford stages it like it's Kevin Spacey about to seduce what's-her-name in American Beauty

Hell is other people. In an ILE film forum. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 3 January 2010 20:03 (fourteen years ago) link

basically, the book was Brokebacked.

I really did love this film, y'all. Cept the ending. Haven't read the book. Maybe that's why. Also the exchange between i know, right? and lamp above completely baffles me.

Julianne Moore's performance gets more terrible in hindsight.

spent so long concentrating on the painting in julianne moore's sitting room (who was this in ref. to? felt very 70s to me, esp in the lol60s colour choices though it would be cool if it led me to a secret history of 60sLA post-painterly pop abstraction)

plax (ico), Friday, 9 April 2010 00:24 (fourteen years ago) link

a bunch of the design touches in this were disorienting but none moreso than dead bf's madras shorts imo. j.moore's whole pad felt like another world

Guys, I think if there's one thing Tom Ford could have been expected to get right and did, it's male beauty. Stop nitpicking.

^^didn't "get" it

plax (ico), Friday, 9 April 2010 11:43 (fourteen years ago) link

After reading the book, I do agree with "rage, resentment spleen."

But the payoff is Matthew Goode as ideal domestic partner of all time.

well, that's in the prof's memory. Idealized through grief.

too cool and slick for any of the color field painters, too early and sumptuous to be a mangold ref, too assymetrical to be a washington school pastiche.

So you're saying Jim really looked like Ernest Borgnine?

queen frostine (Eric H.), Friday, 9 April 2010 12:14 (fourteen years ago) link

(Interestingly enough, there are almost no physical descriptions of Jim in the whole book.)

queen frostine (Eric H.), Friday, 9 April 2010 12:14 (fourteen years ago) link

Haven't read the novella but can buy the films as more sentimental. Even so, liked how little Colin's character was feeling sorry for himself. At least in comparison to Moore.

Artyness was too simplistically done however its more than watchable. Really liked the party scene between Moore and Colin.

bad movie

bit like 'hunger' with its jarring I AM ACHIEVING AN EFFECT stylings

I thought it was a bad film when I saw it earlier in the year, though I enjoyed the Julianne Moore scene. But it lingered my memory visually for quite a while afterwards - so I think there is a bit more to it as a film.

Also,

Dr Morbius asks:

I wonder if just any gay male director, besides a fashion designer, would be casting "frumpy British best friend" from the novel and go to Julianne Moore.

Julianne Moore can do frumpy! I've just seen her inThe Kids are Alright and she has her frumpy moments.

The movie is all this maudlin gay self-pity.

i guess i can't really call the movie a kinkade painting without it sounding negative. that's not really how i mean it but that impressionistic dreamy vibe basically worked ok for me tho it sort of pales in comparison to the book.
