he has his moments of quality... but "LA without a map" was unbelievable shite.

GRRREEAT; classic and dud. Classically dud, perhaps. He's gotta have it

Fantastic film maker, Buffalo 66 has a simplicity and and elegance and beauty, one of christina ricci's best performances. The final scene in the strip club is fantastic and gallo's music here is probably his best. I prefer his film score music to So Sad and, When but there is still a beautiful simplicity present aswell.

Buffalo 66 film: RoXoR.

Buffalo 66 soundtrack: RoXoR.

ergo, Vincent Gallo: RoXoR.

DV, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i think he's possibly the coolest person ever. i look at that article in the old grand royal mag and see all the different things he's done and well, i find it impressive. (the pretensiousness must be ignored) buffalo 66 is a strong candidate for my fave movie ever, and the soundtrack is indeed wonderful. (especially the gallo songs!) his recent album is pretty good, but again you must ignore the pretention (recorded at 'the university for the development and theory of magnetic tape recorded music studios' - give me a break)

anyways, yes, great

Ron, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

where are all the haterz?? alex sf??

Ron, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

*ahem* OK ron, well i'm not actually a HATA as such but i don't think VG is THAT great. i mean, he's OK but i dont understand why every one thinks he's as cool as they seem to. Buffalo 66 was OK. i liked Christina Ricci' tap dance. *shrugs*

heh i have just worked out that Vincent Gallo is the Brazillian footie team of film directors - most people unquestioningly accept that he's the best/coolest thing ever and lick his arse all the time DESPITE him not actually being all that great...

katie, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Vincent Gallo turned up on my doorstep about a year ago to shoot photos with Corinne Day and although I'd been led to PHEAR him by thinking he was this standard-issue Lower East Side arthole, turned out to be totally forceful in his opinions but totally charming with it. and told me a story of extreme sexual wickedness having to do with Harmony Korine and why VG needed to shag Chloe Sevigny as a revenge fuck.

suzy, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

that doesnt sound very charming to me Suzy!

katie, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, it was about H putting Rohypnol in this woman friend's drink, doing something to her which is illegal in several American states while she was out, and apparently the woman hasn't been the same since. So in Paris VG hooked up with Chloe and made sure H found out about it, and why...

I know it's bonkers but apart from that the conversation level was great. He really knows his shit about art and managed to keep me entertained for a few hours.

suzy, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

*brrr* that is an unspeakably sordid story!

mark s, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

mark s, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Let the googling commence! We could say B***b** if that would help.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, Mark S, would you want to sleep with HK?

Ned Raggett, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

this is unsatisfactory at a structural level

mark s, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

One less problem to ponder.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No libel! VG told this story with three witnesses present, and also said it to a journo from Dutch. It was revenge in that he led Chloe to believe she was leaving HK for him through his actions, torturing the wee runt something massive. And then dumped her when she'd actually left, 'just to scare him that it could happen so easily.'

suzy, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

According to Roger Ebert, Vincent Gallo says he's a conservative Republican, and seems to be a bit of a wanker too. Read it here.

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 3 July 2003 07:52 (twenty-two years ago)

So, I don't know much of anything about Gallo and his music but I saw Buffalo 66 and why the fuck do people like that movie? (Besides Christina Ricci's tap dance). It's just one sequence after another that ends with a totally unimaginative let-down, beginning with the opening sequence of him needing to pee and looking for a place to do it ... and then he does it and there's nothing interesting or funny about it, a guy standing next to him notes he has a big package, woo-hoo, there's some comedy ... and going right on up to the lame ending.

My theory is that people think this is cool because Gallo filmed the scenes so that the shots don't match up, like in the dinner-with-the-parents scene where one of the actors will disappear from one angle and reappear in the next, etc. I think this obvious stylistic ploy -- and Christina Ricci's cute tap dance -- distracted everyone from realizing that the movie sucks donkey genitalia.

"Inspiration comes to Chic Chocolatier Katrina Markoff through many mediums...this inspiration came to her from an experience with art, or rather, an artist, Vincent Gallo.

If you have had the opportunity to see a Vincent Gallo film, to listen to his music or to see his art you would know his measure...

Though, how does one go about translating Vincent Gallo into a chocolate? An artist such as he is quite difficult to simplify into any one element or ingredient. With Gallo, it was sure to be a complex undertaking. The chocolate piece must be quite contradictory, a piece that may not be understood by all palates, as well it should not..."

apparently this translates to "savory Italian truffles, ......feature ingredients such as taleggio cheese and balsamic vinegar."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

So, I don't know much of anything about Gallo and his music but I saw Buffalo 66 and why the fuck do people like that movie?

Because it's fucking hilarious. He is a total asshole, and he knows he is an asshole, and meanwhile he's a complete sissy at the same time. I heard so much angry crap about what a dick he was and what an obnoxious-cruel-sexist-boring-pretentious bucket of bile Buffalo 66 was for a year or so until I had to see for myself. Turns out it's the silliest thing ever; for all his anger etc. he can't land a blow to save his life, he's completely impotent underneath, almost cuddly, which he hates, as he's an asshole. I suspect specifically a send-up of the asshole Gallo in fact is. Of course all the scenes are too long and end with a whimper if at all. Of course he's acting like it's this big statement when there's nothing being said at all. How do you feel about, say, Andy Kaufman's wrestling stuff? Not the same thing, but in the vicinity ...

My theory is ...

Um, no.

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

"a guided tasting of Vincent Gallo version chocolat
1. Close your eyes.
2. Take three deep, deep breaths.
3. Start from the top. Bite into the crowning tip of the chocolate. Hold the chocolate on your tongue and press it to the top of your mouth. Feel it melt bittersweetly around your tongue. Begin to eat and you will sense a touch of Taleggio and a nuance for vanilla. Flirt with your newfound acquaintance.
4. Intrigue follows with the 2nd bite, it brings you deeper into the parfums, a heavy and rich texture dotted with toasted walnuts, the aroma steeped with a thousand complexities, yet there is harmony. As the salt hits the palatte it meets the sweetness of chocolate, one constantly begging for the other to be complete.
5. The 3rd bite is met with clarity. The profusion of flavors wrapped and intertwined come together to make sense. You are submerged deeply in a a moment of 'now.' With this last bite, all you crave is just one more."

Why does he love Schiller's so much?

From Page 6:

VINCENT Gallo was reduced to using the motto of the D list - "Don't you know who I am?" - downtown one recent night. The "Brown Bunny" director had walked into Lower East Side hotspot Schiller's around 9 p.m. with a large posse of pals and demanded a table. "The maitre d' told him he'd have to wait an hour," said our spywitness, causing Gallo to "freak out" and start screaming, "Don't you know who I am?" They did not, so Gallo left.

my gallo story is that an acquaintance of mine worked with Gallo on the DVD release of Brown Bunny. Apparently Gallo micromanaged every element and was really upset when they put an umlaut over Chloe Sevigny's name (he was adamant that the umlaut only appear on foreign editions and not the US edition).'

They also begged Gallo to let them use different cover art.

has any ilxor seen the new film?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Promises_Written_in_Water

Reviews are mixed which to me means it might be fantastic.

Gallo being Gallo:

"I would use his (Pete Red Sky´s) crew, his cameras and his actors to pretend to be making a movie, but then I would bring in my camera and sound men, and I would be filming something else...I´d call cut here and action there, then I´d do these improvs and film people while they were on set while they were waiting for the lighting or film rehersal, or film some of the sets they had made."

"There´s 100 hours of film, so the first criteria is to reduce that to 10 hours of what the most beautiful photography was - it could be landscapes, it could be the same take of the same scene, it didn´t matter - whatever I thought was the best 10% of footage. All of it looked pretty good, so when I reduced it to 10% we´re talking about phenomenal footage."

"So now I have 10 hours of film, and the next criteria or filter is that everything has to look good aestethically. So the first two phases are aestethic only, I have no idea after that. There´s sound, but I don´t want to hear it. Now the 10 hours go down to 5 hours. The next level is I turn up the sound - by the way, this movie has 10 minutes of no sound - and the I choose anything I think is 100% honest. I don´t mean documentary, I mean no performance - no acting. So now, I cut that down to 2,5 hours of film."

"3 months go by and I´m looking at these 2,5 hours of footage and I´m not thinking about it as a film whatsoever. So I look at it, and suddenly I realise what´s happening - I see a conflict, a metaphor, a story - not all of it is on the screen but I know what it is. I now know 100% what the film is about, at least to me, I see what the universe is reflecting here out of these 2,5 hours of footage. There´s this lesson and insight about life. And from that, I cut a 77 minute film."

The Brown Bunny is a minor masterpiece. obviously haven't seen the Cannes cut, and Ebert did give the 93 min version a "thumbs up," but his pan reminds me of his inexplicably ignorant pan of the similarly meditative and slow and full of car rides, Taste of Cherry.

kills me that Promises Written in Water (which is supposed to be amazing) will never be released.

Ebert's change of heart on the shorter cut always struck me as disingenuous, an attempt to retroactively give more credibility to his original pan, making a show of being wise and broadminded.

I always thought brown bunny was fine - not as bad as its detractors say but not nearly worth all the ink spilled about it over the years.

I think that's probably true re: Ebert. Gallo also ran with it ("ADULTS ONLY" "RATED X" in all the trailers & that billboard in LA with a still of the final scene), short term benefit that definitely hurt his career in the long run. I mean he could've made more movies after 2004 if he wanted to but judging by his reaction seems like he just gave up. the whole Promises Written in Water thing is so dumb, just release the movie dude
