dan m, Wednesday, 7 October 2009 21:07 (1 month ago) Permalink

i certainly am. i went to sleep at like 9 last night with a headache, then after i was able to check out of work this morning i slept for another hour or two on the couch. and i still feel groggy. part of this may be because i never put in my contacts, wearing my glasses all day makes me feel sleepy for some reason.

btw ZOMBIELAND is fun.

Jenny's heard this but I still think it's funny. My mom - who is 78, non-native-English-speaking, extremely sheltered, and batty - told me that her two favorite movies are The Bird Cage and Coming to America. She is trying to get the social events person at her apartment building to screen them, but that lady is a "muy Protestante" (my mom is also Protestant) and won't let them watch "dirty" movies.

Last week they watched some sort of horror movie in which creatures invade bodies and come out of their ears and eyes.

i'm not very good at napping but i think i'm going to try as soon as i write this post

i try to avoid making comments about what an old man i am because the fact is that many of my friends (and my wife) are older than me but i get sick of people ("hipsters") who fetishize childhood and teenagehood and try to live a life of eternal youth and crazy parties. i think there's something admirable about "growing up" and being more mature and responsible; i'd say i worry more about not being mature enough (like imagining what kind of life a 30-year-old man would have had 50 years ago vs. the life i have now) than i worry about losing my youth and not being able to be a crazy kid anymore.

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 20 November 2009 19:35 (Yesterday) Permalink

that's not really apropos of anything, just something i think about a lot. there are too many bands of 30+ year old men who write songs about teenage beer blasts and not enough bands or 30+ year old men who write songs about actually being adults. i understand it in the context of rock'n'roll tradition but i still wish there were more of the latter.

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 20 November 2009 19:36 (Yesterday) Permalink

Grinderman is good 30+ songs. And Tunnel of Love.

Action Orientation (Eazy), Friday, 20 November 2009 19:42 (Yesterday) Permalink

The challenge is write a good 30+ song in the present tense, or about present-tense things. I wrote a bunch of songs around '05 that all talked about "the old ___" or "our old ____" and it was all past-tense.

L@ura P@rk made a neat poster for the show I'm playing Sunday:

i'd say i worry more about not being mature enough (like imagining what kind of life a 30-year-old man would have had 50 years ago

I'm currently reading Updike's The Maples Stories -- a collection of short stories, written over a number of years, about the same couple, Richard and Joan Maple -- and I was struck that by the third story, when they're described as "thirtyish," they already have three kids and a house in the suburbs. Story takes place in the 1960s, but I think in a lot of places, that's still fairly normal. And even though I'm not sure that I even want kids or a house, and even though most people I know are in the same boat, it still makes me feel a little out of step sometimes.

Huh, that just stirred up a memory of a dream I had -- must've been last night -- in which I'd travelled abroad but didn't have a passport, and whatever country I was in was lax about it, but I was anxious about being able to get back into the U.S.

Nuyorican oatmeal (jaymc), Friday, 20 November 2009 19:59 (Yesterday) Permalink

Over the past few years I've been increasingly concerned about being left behind by my maturing friends. I feel like as a gay man, I'm pretty much on track as far as maturity goes, and I'm fine with that, but since my close friends are all straight, I feel out of synch.

human centaurpede (Jesse), Friday, 20 November 2009 20:08 (Yesterday) Permalink

Drug test. One would think an employer would have a slightly more accessible option, or that an employe would warn an applicant in advance that any peeing in any cups would require serious travel, but then one would be wrong.

Also, I don't know how many times I have to tell people that an applicant does not need a freaking SS card for an I-9 form, but it's like, how blatantly can I tell an HR lady that she is completely and totally wrong before I ruin my chances of getting hired?

I am so annoyed right now.

Near is a relative term, but that is the closest train station, yes. It's not entirely inaccessible, but it would take awhile and I actually have other things I was planning on doing today.

It matters not. There is an easily accessible south loop location that they failed to mention, and I have already emailed them and told them they will get the "receipt" from the test on Tuesday which is the earliest that I will be able to return to their offices after surrendering my pee, and if they don't like it, they can stuff it.

On the bright side, I did find my I-Go number and my social security card.
