literally had no idea what necroposting was before trying to read the above series of posts

/I thought my post was pretty clearly tongue-in-cheek/

it was! sorry if I added to the confusion

Yes this was 100% obvious don’t worry

I'm usually self-deprecating and relatively modest but I'm going to admit:
I've read through old music threads, found a comment and thought "wow, I really agree with this guy" only to realize.. I was that guy

Fight Club version of the Piña Colada song, I like it.

pplains, Thursday, 16 April 2020 23:46 (four years ago) link

i always thought the quality of the necrothreads was one thing that set ILX apart. i do see it as a resource for the future, or an archive

if there needs to be a debate about this, it can happen in this thread.

i’m too angry to say much beyond: i thought it went without saying that as a community we use discretion in what threads are appropriate to revive. amplifying hate speech in the service of a cheap joke should get you banned from the board, period.

I see what thread was bumped (as an attempt to lightly dunk on something Karl said itt) looks like a mod deleted it. probably for the best

weirdly enough Pashmina was the OG poster in it (under his Xtian name)

yeah, it's called "this guy was me", the first track on side two of the 1989 cassette "parrots on fire" by the algy krebbs quartet, underrated jam

i'm frankly disappointed at how often i agree with myself

i have no idea what happened, or what i said that got dunked on, or what thread was revived, or whether or not it was deleted. if it was something really dumb i said a long time ago on a thread, revived, then i'm pretty certain i deserve it. i just spent 4 hours arguing with my mom, trying to get her to own up to a single fucked up thing that she and my dad did, and completely failed. all i wanted was for her to just tell the truth, about anything really, and she couldn't do it. so if someone revived something i said that was ignorant and ugly, i'm definitely not proud of it, but at least i will own up to it and say that i did it and that if it feels cringey and terrible now, at least that means i'm not that same person anymore

let me be your friend on the other end! (Karl Malone), Friday, 17 April 2020 05:54 (four years ago) link

oh no :(. i'm so sorry Karl.

this is where I wish I had been more specific. so, without naming the thread itself, which you can't even search for on ILX anymore, there was a thread with a transphobic title (from the wee early days of ILX). you didn't post in it, to my knowledge.

but Whiney took your quote about necrothreads and bumped that thread with that quote, I guess to say "u sure our necrothreads are high quality"?

but budo called him on it, and somehow they were deleted.

u did nothin wrong dogg.

genital giant (Neanderthal), Friday, 17 April 2020 06:08 (four years ago) link

don't agree that deleting evidence of community consciousness changing is a great way to represent the change fwiw

I guess being a snide dick to someone now on an old dickish thread is a good way to show that ppl used to and can still be dicks, though

Searching by date without any other search criteria - like let me see threads started in a date range.

Also while I'm on date searching - the date fields on mobile bring up a calendar instead of allowing text entry, meaning if I want to search by date for something from 2006 I need to click the back-a-month button 100 times.

Non, je ned raggette rien (onimo), Friday, 17 April 2020 11:41 (four years ago) link

Then when I move to the next date field (for a BETWEEN search) it defaults to today's date so I have to click it another 90 odd times.

idk, i read soda's post in the thread delete request topic and assumed the thread was actually deleted

commendations to the mods for addressing the issue so rapidly. i did see the thread in question because i didn't click on it or pay much attention to the title because my whiney-sense tells me that i probably shouldn't click on any thread he's bumped. honestly didn't register with me that it was transphobic. again thanks to soda; i'm grateful to not have had to be confronted with that old bullshit firsthand.

unfortunately i guess a side effect of that is that it's maybe a bit tricky to piece together what actually happened, but karl, trust me, it was nothing you did.

With long threads as well as 'Skipping xxxx messages at this point... Click here if you want to load them all, 'can we have a 'view previous 100 messages' as otherwise alternative is to load the full thread?

― Dan Worsley, Thursday, April 16, 2020 2:16 PM (yesterday) bookmarkflaglink

1 - click permalink on the first post AFTER the cutoff (the one you want to scroll back from)
2 - On that new page where that post is the first post shown, decrease the number in the URL that's "bookmarkedmessageid=xxxxxx" Usually dropping it by 200 or 300 will be enough to get you back to where you want, sometimes you have to lower it by 1000 or so. So for instance your message the messageid=7539647, so if I were to lower that to 7539347 it would load messages starting 300 posts back. I believe that post number is site-wide, so that's "300 posts back" counting all posts made on ILX, not this thread.

I still have all those categories somewhere; we could put them back

― stet, Thursday, 16 April 2020 21:16 (three days ago) bookmarkflaglink

Glenn should run a clustering algorithm over all the ILX threads to come up with inscrutable categories like "escape room" and "pineapple soufflé".

idk if this one has come up, but a small indicator on a board to see which threads i have bookmarked and which i don't would be cool! (mostly bc i have like... almost everything on ILG bookmarked and i can't remember which ones i don't haha)

Hackers (1995) (Will M.), Thursday, 23 April 2020 23:20 (four years ago) link

one month passes...

There is probably one or more good reasons for this, but why doesn't ilxor.com host images, even if only for a week or month (so that we could post straight from our devices)?

below the mendoza (rip van wanko), Wednesday, 17 June 2020 18:09 (three years ago) link

i would guess that it's expensive to do, especially given that there are free alternatives (you can upload an image to imgur from your device and get a bbc-formatted link, although it's one more step i guess)

another possible reason is that if ilx hosted images i would get sternly worded emails warning me about posting enormous, memory-sucking extreme high-resolution extreme close-ups of nose hair of assholes, politicians, and the assholes of politicians

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 17 June 2020 18:36 (three years ago) link

Aside from the bandwidth expense, I wonder if stet would be fielding loads of takedown notices if ilxors uploaded copyrighted images.

Irritable Baal (WmC), Wednesday, 17 June 2020 18:58 (three years ago) link

It’s a surprisingly fraught security risk - and more importantly it’s potentially really expensive in bandwidth. Those are the main two reasons. But I might have an idea of how to do it; have been looking into it for a while.

stet, Wednesday, 17 June 2020 19:05 (three years ago) link

if it only hosted an image for a week or month wouldn't that exacerbate our broken img problem?

Mordy, Wednesday, 17 June 2020 19:05 (three years ago) link

let the image posters survive by their wits, stealing from the rich (internet jerks) to give to the poor (ilx)

"Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in."

would be nice if this had a link to the results post in it so we don't have to 'show all messages' (which is trouble with long threads)

koogs, Thursday, 18 June 2020 08:50 (three years ago) link

That's no problem, you can just hit "home", since it's always the first post- it's getting back to read the followup posts that's troublesome. It's often been suggested to have System post the actual results in the update post, and presumably stet would have done this long ago if it were easy.

an, uh, razor of love (sic), Thursday, 18 June 2020 09:01 (three years ago) link

if you're using bookmarks then the only post you see is the thread bump so hitting home won't work.

koogs, Thursday, 18 June 2020 09:08 (three years ago) link

the argument in favour of pics is the sheer amount of broken shit we get in the old threads – and the security holes when bad actors buy those domains

stet, Thursday, 18 June 2020 10:54 (three years ago) link

If someone's not going to upload a photo to imgur and use that link, why would they bother to upload to an ILX internal server?

Not talking so much about photos on your phone, but finding photo links from the web and changing the URL to those.

pplains, Thursday, 18 June 2020 13:43 (three years ago) link

it's the "photos on your phone" case I'm mostly thinking about tbh.

stet, Thursday, 18 June 2020 14:25 (three years ago) link

Are there any image hosts that automatically shrink phone photos to a reasonable size, for inline posting purposes?

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 18 June 2020 14:42 (three years ago) link

you can do it within imgur but it's kind of a pain (you have to hit edit after you upload and tell it the new dimensions, and plus it tends to reduce the quality of the image for some reason, even though it shouldn't)

Karl Malone, Thursday, 18 June 2020 14:56 (three years ago) link
