some thoughts

1) there is basically 1 joke in this movie, paul rudd trying to use breezy made-up slang/funny accents, luckily that joke is hilarious and i laughed a lot

2) ok there are more jokes than that but that is the main joke

3) i basically cant watch movies like this--i spend the whole time with my fingers in my ears or burying my face in my lap. the minute i realized where segels toast was going i put my head in my sweater and didnt look at the movie again for like 10 minutes. i felt tense the whole movie just waiting for terrible embarrassing things

4) luckily paul rudd kept saying shit like "slap the bass" and i would laugh and release the tensions

5) rashida jones is, like, smoking. and funny. wd marry on the spot.

6) i guess they made andy sambergs character gay just to avoid the is-paul-rudd-gay question but it seemed like sort of a dead end

7) youd think id be tired of these stupid man-child movies but im not, yet. and while on the one had i cd use fewer 'take yr tampax out' jokes i dont think these are as regressive w/r/t gender as movies like this were 10 yrs ago

I agree with the above, esp. the noting of Samberg as a token "gay" character. He, Jones, Simmons etc. are totally wasted.

This year we're seeing a slew of pseudo-Apatow movies; this one, Greg Mottola's "Adventureland" and Jody Hill's "Observe and Report," followed by an actual Apatow movie, "Funny People." Interested to see which is best. (Definitely not "I Love You, Man," though.)

this movie was so fucking funny

incredible improv w/ the slap the bass scene, the joe/bro running gag, the scene where segel's taking photos of rudd, so many lols.

bit characters were pretty good too, i enjoyed samberg for the third time in my life, jamie pressley and her husband were reeeeeaally great

also i would do anything to marry either rashida jones or paul rudd or best case scenario be their houseboy

finally caught Chololat on AMC the other day...it was delightful!

pt 2 of the pseudo-Apatow sweepstakes, "adventureland," is much much better.

this wasn't as funny as I'd hoped, a nice enough distraction but probalby would have worked better on DVD. I actually think Role Models was funnier. It seemed really kind of stilted at times. But parts of it were pretty good. Adventureland is a much, much better movie though. And it had a Rush reference too!

this movie was kind of pointless. the conflict in the story was so minute it looked like it was there just because it had to be.

As far as humor, it was funny as hell for the first half but when they hit the height of the story arc it fell off.

2.5 stars out of 4 at best. Though I LOLed when Jason Segel yelled "Shut YOUR FUCKHOLE!"

This joke is so good that even after watching the entire movie I laughed at every single one of the 30+ minutes of outtakes which were basically that joke ad infinitum.

this was the exact same problem that Forgetting Sarah Marshall movie had. Some alright jokes and moments but it wasn't really building to anything and so it felt very episodic -- it was like watching a tv show on DVD and hitting "play all episodes" for two hours.

I watched this a couple weeks ago. It was watchable but Max is right - FSM was much better.

all the slappa-the-bass stuff got on my nerves i guess, but everything else was decently funny, really liked the running jon favreau stuff

This movie was mediocre - Segel was great in individual scenes, but the central story was threadbare and "who cares", which insinuates they wrote the story around the jokes, which is never a good idea.

Also getting tired of films/shows thinks using Lou Ferrigno as himself is the Everest of comedy

Apatow connection in Adventureland is pretty tenuous, both in terms of cast and tone

What classic novel did you recently read for the first time?

The last book I read that legitimately qualifies as a classic is “Infinite Jest,” by David Foster Wallace. It is a difficult read, and intentionally so I think. I did it with a book club where we budgeted 100 pages per week over 10 weeks or so. It was truly one of the most gratifying experiences of my life. A group of four grown men sitting around talking about dissatisfaction and loneliness was far more comfortable than I would have imagined. I highly recommend it, with or without a book.
