What began as a company’s suspicion that its infrastructure was being hacked turned into a case of a worker outsourcing his own job to a Chinese consulting firm, according to reports that cite an investigation by Verizon’s security team. The man was earning a six-figure salary.

The anonymous company, identified only as a critical infrastructure firm, asked Verizon’s Web security personnel to look into data that showed its virtual private network was being accessed from China — even as the employee whose credentials were used to log in from overseas was sitting in the company’s offices, using his computer.

As Emil Protalinski writes at The Next Web, the company’s security measures included a coded fob which, the investigating team learned, a code developer had shipped to Shenyang, China, so that a company there could perform his assigned work.

And it turns out that the job done in China was above par — the employee’s “code was clean, well written, and submitted in a timely fashion. Quarter after quarter, his performance review noted him as the best developer in the building,” according to the Verizon Security Blog.

And as they learned, his schedule also included sending less than one-fifth of his salary to the Chinese firm. Verizon’s investigators say the evidence they uncovered suggests “Bob” might have had similar arrangements at several companies.

"All told, it looked like he earned several hundred thousand dollars a year, and only had to pay the Chinese consulting firm about fifty grand annually," according to the Security Blog.

  • 11:30 a.m. – Take lunch
  • 1:00 p.m. – Ebay time.

One of my alcoholic uncles had a humanist funeral, because a catholic burial was out of the question. He was displayed in a coffin with his scruffy leather jacket and a can of his beloved Super T in his pocket. it was a very moving send off, much more so than some priest shit talking about someone he has never met. I think that is a brilliant way to pay tribute somebody who has passed, much more honest and respectful than these shitty funerals.

Khrushchev, meanwhile, stood uncomfortably in the children’s end of the pool until Mao, with more than a touch of malice, suggested that he join him in the deeper water.

A flotation device was suddenly produced—Lorenz Lüthi describes it as a “life belt,” while Henry Kissinger prefers “water wings.” Either way, the result was scarcely dignified. Mao, says Lüthi, covered his head with “a handkerchief with knots at all the corners” and swept up and down the pool while Khrushchev struggled to stay afloat. After considerable exertion, the Soviet leader was able to get moving, “paddling like a dog” in a desperate attempt to keep up. “It was an unforgettable picture,” said his aide Oleg Troyanovskii, “the appearance of two well-fed leaders in swimming trunks, discussing questions of great policy under splashes of water.”

Mao, Taubman relates, “watched Khrushchev’s clumsy efforts with obvious relish and then dived in the deep end and swam back and forth using several different strokes.” The chairman’s personal physician, Li Zhisui, believed that he was playing the role of emperor, “treating Khrushchev like a barbarian come to pay tribute.”

Khrushchev played the scene down in his memoirs, acknowledging that “of course we could not compete with him when it came to long distance swimming” and insisting that “most of the time we lay around like seals on warm sand or a rug and talked.” But he revealed his true feelings a few years later in a speech to an audience of artists and writers:

“He’s a prizewinning swimmer, and I’m a miner. Between us, I basically flop around when I swim; I’m not very good at it. But he swims around, showing off, all the while expounding his political views…. It was Mao’s way of putting himself in an advantageous position.”

this is more striking imagery than an actual picture but all the same, from Chris Rock profile in RS:

In his dressing room, a few candles burn next to a framed portrait of Prince. Rock's crew is responsible at each stop for putting a new photo of the legend in a place of honor. Rock won't say he and Prince were close, but they talked, and Rock loved his music. He saw Prince do one of his final shows, at a New Year's Eve party in 2015 on St. Barts with Paul McCartney and Leonardo DiCaprio in the audience.

A SPANISH public servant who skipped work for a decade without anyone noticing spent his free time running a male brothel and drawing erotic comics.
Carles Recio, who was paid a 50,000 euro ($80,000) salary as an archives director in Valencia’s provincial government, would show up to the office every morning at 7:30am to clock in using the fingerprint scanner before heading home, only returning to the office at 3:30pm to clock out.
He kept up the routine for 10 years before colleagues began to raise suspicions. After Spanish newspaper El Mundo broke the story 18 months ago, Mr Recio was finally sacked, despite his insistence that he had done nothing wrong.
Mr Recio was making a name for himself as a erotic comic book artist and creator of the popular character Fallarela, a busty superhero who hurls flaming Valencia oranges at her enemies
It also emerged Mr Recio had been running a male brothel out of his home since 2005. At one point he threatened to reveal the identities of his clients, warning there may have been cameras inside and the “graphic information” could compromise many politicians.
As part of his high-profile campaign to clear his name, Mr Recio even attempted to use a council venue for an art exhibition entitled, “Love for Valencia: the works of a man who never worked”, with four floors of works including paintings, sculptures and even a bronze bust of himself.
The City of Valencia cancelled the show, which described Mr Recio as “the most slandered writer in modern-day Valencia”, just before it was due to open after the council discovered he had booked the venue using a fake name.

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (AP) — Police in northern Texas say a woman has been banned from a local Walmart after she spent several hours driving an electric shopping cart around the store’s parking lot while drinking wine from a Pringles can.

Police tell the Times Record News that officers responded to a suspicious person call at about 9 a.m. Friday at a Walmart in Wichita Falls, about 125 miles (200 kilometers) northwest of Dallas.

Wichita Falls police spokesman Jeff Hughes says the woman had reportedly been riding the electric cart around the parking lot for about three hours.

Hughes says police eventually found the woman in a nearby restaurant and told her not to return to the store.

Police say the woman wasn’t arrested and her name was not released.

It always seems like 90% of this thread is devoted to pure hedonism or unbridled individualism. iow, you all didn't watch as millions of free-love hippies turned into yuppies or flaming libertarian assholes because of that "if it feels good, do it" arrested thinking.

They seem to have got it made. Judging by Google Maps Klovharun is a tiny bit of rock miles from anywhere. The house still exists. This is sad:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-26529309

"In 1964, Jansson and Tuulikki Pietila built a simple house on Klovharu, without running water or electricity, which they could escape to in the summer months, and work without interruption.

It was there in 1970 that Jansson began writing her final Moomin book, Moominvalley in November, a melancholy story reflecting the author's grief after the death of her mother. It features a new character, Toft, which Jansson based on herself. When Toft arrives at the usually busy Moominhouse, there's no-one there."

Which reminds me - if you Google Hildur Guðnadóttir, a tonne of publicity photos were taken in a studio that she uses. At first I thought it was her house, but it's actually one of those quasi-home studios along the lines of Hotel2Tango etc. Nonetheless it looks like a life goal:

In fact she literally seems to live inside the Ikea catalogue, which makes me wonder if she is computer-generated as well:
