RISE FROM YOUR GRAVE: Are you gamer/retro/batshit enough to join the I Love Games Players Club?

Crossposted to ILE for folks who might not read I Love Games:

So here's my proposition: I'd like to start an ILX board for those interested in participating in a gaming club, a'la Vintage Game Club... basically a game nerd version of a book club; a place where ILXors can play a game on their own as part of a collective while taking notes and looking for points of interest... then sitting down to discuss nuances, plot, trivia, preferences, hidden points of interest, etc. on board.

Five or ten people (or more!) simultaneously playing/replaying through classic or recent games on a timeline ("everybody get to level six by wednesday and meet back here to talk about it")sounds like a good time to me and quite a lot of you folks seem the type to be nutty enough to wanna join in!

I don't think this can/should fit on ILG; it needs some room to stretch out onto multiple threads to discuss music/gameplay/control issues/storyline/fave quotes/etc that would get clogged on a single thread. My thought was that it'd prolly be best as an invite only board to keep the signal to noise ratio well balanced and avoid trolling and general ass-flashing, but it's invite only in the same way Curtis Borad is; the walls are up to keep you in, not out.

Anyways, Tombot seemed open to trying this little skinner box on for size, so he got-r-done and we're a go to actually do this!

The first game we'll be playing is the newly-free-on-gametap classic Fallout 1, so if you have a PC or a Mac (which seems like a safe bet) you can join regardless of your current console generation ownership level.
Future games will run the gamut; I'd like to try drastically different genres and give folks an excuse to try on something they've never done: a JRPG or a shooter or a FPS or a text adventure or a SCUMM system or Peggle etc. etc.

The upshot is that if you'd like to take part in The Players Club, all you need to do is post your name on this thread saying so and we'll invite you in. I'd love to have a mix of people who've never played the game (and that includes me for the first one), people who played the Gzeus Chrono Trigger out of it and some "I think I played it in 97?" types too. Gamers from all countries are welcome. More details and rules and scheduling and other nonsense will be posted on the new board once we wrangle up the initial guild o' folks.

So who's in?

maybe, but I don't think I could commit to every game. would we be able to float in and out on a game-by-game basis and/or according to whether we actually have time for it?

What salsa said. I'm all for it but committing the time could be an issue. Can I get an invite so I can lurk around if I promise to join in as often as I can?

aye it's me (onimo), Friday, 26 September 2008 13:02 (fifteen years ago) link

I'll join. I've actually been meaning to play Fallout 1 for a while now (I've played the second one). Not sure I'll always be able to keep up since I have a 2 month old son who eats up a whole lot of my time, but I'll try.

If I can play this on my newish iMac, and if playing for about an hour a day is ok, count me in. I've never played Fallout but love rpgs and futuristic doom.

This sounds a great idea, but I'm not sure I can guarantee enough time.

Then again, I'm about to be housebound for a couple of weeks and I've been meaning to play Fallout (never played before, had somehow assumed it was a genre I don't care for at all and was surprised to learn I was wrong when someone assumed from all my other game tastes that I must be familiar with it), so I'd be interested in an invite if you don't mind the high probability of me flaking. Thanks.

Lurkers, potential flakers, etc are all welcome; nobody's getting graded on this. It's for fun!

I'm glad there's some interest; let me write an intro thread and a few starting study questions and I'll send out invites shortly.

Burt, BNW: can't tell if that's genuine interest or just chain yankin'. Let me know if you actually want in.

Incidentally, I'll need your email to invite you to the board, so if it's not listed on your profile, ilx mail it to me off thread and I'll put you on.

Okay, it's up and running! Took awhile because I was playing Bioshock all day...

If you haven't received an email (or would like to join in midway or for future games), please ILXmail me and I'll add you to the board list.

I've spent quite some time crafting an environment for us to talk about the game in; hopefully it'll prove to be time well spent and not me being OCD again. Just click the posts

Hope to see you there.

Hey guys,
There's no email to get. Go to Boards and scroll down to ILG Players Club. You should be able to get in now.

I'd like to be involved! I don't much want to play fallout, but I will play other things pretty avidly

ILX Systern (ken c), Wednesday, 8 October 2008 16:39 (fifteen years ago) link

I think so?
Somebody's been emailing me requesting to get in, but not giving me an email.
I'm actually ready to make this an open board; seems like it's not much help to close it off. My bad.

If you are NOT in and would like to be, make sure you ILXmail me with the email you used to sign up for ILX and I'll add your name. Then when you go to boards, scroll down to the I Love Games Players Club near the bottom of the list to enter.

Salsa Shark, mail me the email you signed up for ILX with.
