chris, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yes, Luke I think. He plays a monster.

You're worse than Otis.

America's men have been infantilized.

The opening scene of "Blade"(where theres this rave on and all this blood comes spurting out of the sprinklers) is the BEST SCENE EVUURR...Haven't seen Blade 2. Yet.

Michael Bourke, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i saw a preview for it online and it looks awesome. the first one is vastly entertaining, if only for the aforementioned vampire disco scene. i hope they release it over here...

opening scene of Blade is well cool yes, music is Pump Panels rmx of New Order. It was Dan who revealed this to me, i did not know, and i am a fan of New Order and Tim Taylor...

Luke Goss is great in it! Didn't care for a lot of the dizzying fight scenes and I hated Norman Reedus as the feisty kid sidekick, but I loved the whole war of the vampires storyline-- the Rave/Goth/Mod Prim vampires vs. the Nosferatu/Alien vampires, wheeee.

Arthur, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I'm really looking forward to seeing it, almost as much as Cross Roads.

Sounds like a campaign of Vampire: The Masquerade come to life, and why not?

The question really is, does Kris Kristofferson's hair look even more like a tangled overthrown thatch of bracken?

Ned Raggett, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ron Pearlman, Yay!

Dan I, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ned: Yes.

I cannot really give a cogent analysis of this movie because it hit pretty much every, "Oh how NEAT!" button for me. The vampire war = BEYOND KEWL. The new generation vampires are UTTER BASTARDS. The fight scenes were OHMOMMYITSMYFAVE good. Wesley Snipes kicks severe ass. Also, there was another EXCELLENT NIGHT CLUB SCENE in it, only I can't remember the song they used for it. Plus, the main track that gets played in the movie is a collaboration between Mos Def and Massive Attack, which means I am required to love the movie or risk uspetting the fundamental rules that describe our reality.

And there, folks, is Dan's _totally_ objective opinion...

If nowt else, I applaud your bravery in standing up to be counted;>

Rationality is overrated, Nichole, PARTICULARLY where Blade slicing up vampires is concerned.

Dan Perry, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Blade 2 was great. I think the pro-wrestling moves went over my head though, as everyone in the theatre cheered at that point except my girlfriend and I. Aside from that, it was cool, especially seeing the fiery vagina of Sauron reinterpreted as the oozing-unisex- tentacle-mouth-thing of Super-vampire.

The sidekick was making me homicidal too--not KK, the annoying young one.

adam, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I got dragged to see this this weekend: it was actually pretty cool!

It was very pulpy, the kind of gory afternoon horror flick that used to get played on television on Sundays. Silly fun...

***Rationality is overrated, Nichole, PARTICULARLY where Blade slicing up vampires is concerned.***

I can get with vamp kitsch, but I just can't buy Wesley Snipes as a denizen of the dark....

That said, I admit to still watching "Buffy";>

Nichole Graham, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Butbutbut Wesley is the DAYWALKER! Hence, not a denzien of the dark but one who hunts them in ultra-cool martial-arts stylee!

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

He wears sunglasses in the day and at night = he is a denizen of the dark. Or he is Corey Hart.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Blade is not Corey Hart. I just thought I'd make that clear.

Something I recently learned which explains why Wesley Snipes is such a bad-ass in this movie is that he's a multiple-degree black belt in several forms of martial arts. This explains why I thought his stunt double was so good; most of the time it actually was him. Oh, and I love the soundtrack more and more every day, even that fucking awful Eve/Fatboy Slim track is actually great.

Dan Perry, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

So Wesley did do his own stunts? I was wondering that myself when I saw it this past weekend, because you could see him very clearly in all his fights. Cool movie, natch.

Vinnie, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

So Wesley did do his own stunts?

Check this interview with Roshumba Williams of Entertainment Tonight. To quote Wesley himself, he did not "fake the funk".

Coolest fact: Snipes has a black belt in capoeira!

Dan Perry, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Capoiera doesn't have black belts. What with it being a Brazillian /African dancing martia,l art its grading system is completely outside those of Japanese martial arts. And did you evah see Eddie Gordo wear a belt?

Pete, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Okay, so I made up the black belt part, but he's proficient in it. Damn, first time I try to spring a lie, the Lying King has to come back from FRANCE and spoil it for me...

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Sorry Dan, but I have a throne to reclaim (and my place of work just happens to be one of the big Capoeira teaching places in London).

Saw it Sunday by the way. It was fun in a very stupid way - the OTT wrestling bit at the end between Goss and Snipes was very funny. Snipes may be a martial artist of repute but how would he fare on Smackdown eh? Prague location was good, mixed mythos was less good. (of all the thinks that can kill them, light seems particularly wussy). Still Perlman is always worth a bang for your buck - though I wanted to give grumpy old "back from the dead plot device" KRistofferson a slap round the chops.

Pete, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

(I almost called you Simba the Lying King but decided that even I had an ounce of shame.)

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

fourteen years pass...

Spending my American holiday wknd watching Blade II for the first time ever.

I'm enjoying this, but Lord Almighty did the aesthetic choices made by the Matrix films taint all western action movies for too many years.

Still, Norman Reedus as 20something scrubby tech dude is in this, and introduced exactly like the mechanic from Road Warrior! The Head Vampire Lord is Voldemort/ST:TNG alien/Tom Hardy in "ST: Nemesis"!

Also the scene where they load up to investigate the sewer level and it's all lit light is straight outta Aliens

All lit with blue light, rather
