I've been noticing increased spam lately too. For the first time I am now getting more spam than legit mail.

Fuck! Just as I was writing that, the bell rang and it was Japanese Jehovah's Witnesses. Can you believe it? I thought I might have escaped Christian spam by coming to Japan but no, they handed me the fucking Watchtower in fucking Japanese!

Fucking spam!

Momus, Friday, 22 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I get very little. I was getting those sexi mandi ones and would always reply w/ REMOVE and they seem to be gone, knock on wood. I also get from time to time some mails containing home electronics adverts from Taiwan I think. but that's about it.

50 or 60 a day. I really REALLY need to figure out how to install a severe filter on Unix.

Douglas, Friday, 22 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Did anyone else get the Dr Progress Peter one? In which the guy offers to rip off a foreign bank or something if you send him some money?

bnw, Saturday, 23 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have it from a reputable source (ex-roomie-tech-uber-nerd) that you should NEVER use the unsubscribe function in spam (unless it's some obviously legit service that someone else signed up for with your addy - like Microsft game zone or something) because apparently, they use those unsubscribe links to VERIFY THAT YOUR ADDRESS IS ACTIVE and will send you even more spam and will even sell your more valuable 'verified active' address on to other spammers. I have no proof, but as was said - the emails don't usually stop.

Kim, Saturday, 23 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Rarely if evah get spam. Probably cause I change email addresses every other week. hah!

nathalie (nathalie), Saturday, 23 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

All my hotmail emails go into junk now. 90% of the emails I get are spam.

jel --, Saturday, 23 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I get very little. My oldest friend tells me he gets frequent septic tank spam, for no reason we can guess.

Martin Skidmore, Saturday, 23 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah, you're right Kim. also don't click on links, cos it's easy to put an id number in the link and then again know your mailbox is active when you click on the link. the advantage of knowing which one's are live is they can resell a more accurate list - it's often the bounces and failed messages that give away spammers' activities to ISPs

michael, Saturday, 23 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

hey martin, i get the septic spam one too, but not much else, i don't seem to get any spam really, even sexmandi has stopped now, and of her own accord it would seem

gareth, Saturday, 23 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i got dave q spam this morning! three of em, in fact.

jess, Saturday, 23 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

sexmandi started right after dave q stopped =>
i. sexmandi IS dave q,
or ii. dave q replied to sexmandi and now they are stepping out

nathalie, Saturday, 23 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one year passes...
I was searching for a thread on spam because I needed to share this gem:

EXTEND your meat pole

(I mean, really.)

But then I found this and a couple other related threads and realized I had something actually valuable to contribute! OMG!

Unfortunately the online article doesn't have the neat graph that was in the paper (Tuesday's if you still have it around) that shows a drastic rise in spam in just the last three months!

Brightmail, which makes spam-filtering software for corporate networks and big Internet providers, says that 45 percent of the e-mail it now sees is junk, up from 16 percent in January 2002. America Online says the amount of spam aimed at its 35 million customers has doubled since the beginning of this year and now approaches two billion messages a day, more than 70 percent of the messages AOL receives, not of those that it delivers to users. (AOL discards the messages it identifies as spam.)

four years pass...

fucking 15k attachments, I'm getting like 20 a day to my yaho_0 email. I've always been very lucky with spam, as in hardly getting any, so I'm not sure what to do. But I'm thinking change of address if this doesn't stop.

The kuci.org mail server is routed through gmail now and I gotta say their spam filters are brutally efficient. Haven't received one via the inbox in a long while now.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 22 July 2007 00:10 (eighteen years ago)

A little too efficient, sometimes...I have to check my work gmail's lint trap every now and then and retrieve legit mail that got caught.

Rock Hardy, Sunday, 22 July 2007 00:26 (eighteen years ago)

one month passes...

I just deleted tons of spam from my gmail folder and one of the titles was a little mysterious, but it was gone before I could check out what they were trying to sell:

"my boyfriend's shaft is too big for my mouth"

are they selling mouth enlargement medication? penis shortening gel?

StanM, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 19:18 (eighteen years ago)

I got an e-mail today from a not-suspicious e-mail address, but from no one I knew.

"Subject: U SUCK!

I SAID U SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

?

Jordan, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

I've never gotten that one. Did you try googling parts or the whole of the address?

Will M., Tuesday, 18 September 2007 20:27 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, I've gotten another one, from Ginger, you crowder!

My new guy's pecker is enormous, and my mouth is tiny.
