I was going to mention Ruby as well, she is absolutely radiant in those Busby Berkeley numbers <3<3<3:

When she starts singing in that quavery, little-old-lady voice, it really gets to me.

Winifred Lenihan is lovely. Also, a rare example of a famous person without a wikipedia entry, leaving her life story unsullied by actual facts. I imagine her as a star of 20s Soviet propaganda posters, before disappearing in the South Pacific flying missions during WWII.

As for the rest, there was some crazy eyebrow plucking going on in those days.

Winifred Lenihan is the most stunning of all of these - the rest seem very obviously tied to their time, whereas she could have stepped out of any decade.

Huge in her day, but now forgotten movie star Dolores Costello, weirdly contemporary looking image, could have been taken yesterday, I think. it's from the late '20's:

Pashmina, Friday, 8 August 2008 12:06 (1 year ago) Permalink

v v difficult to find a pic of Pola that gives an impression of what she looked like in motion. in stills she can look very masculine, absolutely not the case in her films:

Pashmina, Friday, 8 August 2008 12:08 (1 year ago) Permalink

there's this picture of hepburn by Horst back when she was just starting out and she's all curled up in a chair all legs and arms and looking very modern and sophisticated -- i only saw it once at a gallery in chelsea that was selling vintage prints for god-knows how many thousands of dollars and I haven't seen it since.

Toby Wing, one of my favourites!

being serenaded by Dick Powell in "42nd Street":

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOerxVCr1Ys

as a cactus flower in this unbelievable number from "Murder at the Vanities" in 1934.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rnySJxE_XQA

I sort of remember reading some comment that she made in which she said she'd had a better time in the depression than most because she'd been paid to pout and look pretty and basically do nothing.

Pashmina, Friday, 8 August 2008 13:22 (1 year ago) Permalink

I'm very surprised by the lack of the original Platinum Blonde, Jean Harlow

As lady Astor is alleged to have said "You spell it with a silent 't'."
