Noodle Vague, Monday, 21 July 2008 21:46 (seventeen years ago)

Will definitely be asking friends in Belgrade about this one...

Ned Raggett, Monday, 21 July 2008 21:48 (seventeen years ago)

I wonder what happened - he can't have just gone into hiding all that time without getting at least some protection

StanM, Monday, 21 July 2008 21:49 (seventeen years ago)

Let's hope they get Ratko Mladić as well...

StanM, Monday, 21 July 2008 21:50 (seventeen years ago)

xpost yeah the only way this happened is that it made political sense for Tadic and his party for it to happen

G00blar, Monday, 21 July 2008 21:50 (seventeen years ago)

Apparently he was hiding out in monasteries.

kate78, Monday, 21 July 2008 22:16 (seventeen years ago)

... does that mean he had help from the (what kind of?) church?

StanM, Monday, 21 July 2008 22:31 (seventeen years ago)

Serbian Orthodox, natch.

James Mitchell, Monday, 21 July 2008 22:43 (seventeen years ago)

Super Cub, Monday, 21 July 2008 22:49 (seventeen years ago)

StanM, Monday, 21 July 2008 22:58 (seventeen years ago)

Yep, 5 million US dollars

Oh, HYS. Do you ever fail to blame teh Muslims?

The irony of all this (at least from my perspective) is how the Islamic world is ready to throw the book at Radavan Karadzic before the ICC for crimes he committed AGAINST Muslims at Srebrenica, yet they're remiss to have Omar Al-Bashir of Sudan face the court for similar crimes - committed BY a Muslim at Darfur. You can't have it both ways.

Word from a friend in Serbia re: her circle in general's feelings -- 'ecstatic and hopeful.' Karadzic reviled as a politician who worked 'for himself and no-one else.'

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 06:25 (seventeen years ago)

Bearing a startling resemblance to Paul Morley. Is there something we should be told?

Neil S, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 08:48 (seventeen years ago)

Bears a startling resemblance to Father Ted, really!

Mark G, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 08:51 (seventeen years ago)

Karadzic was caught in a frigging bus in downtwon Belgrade. The man has lived a normal life for the last 10 years. The arrest only took one simple administrative order from the government

Well they have had a change of government recently, so it's not like some leader has waited 20 years to go "Fuck it, I'll arrest Karadzic".

Captured Bosnian Serb war crimes suspect Radovan Karadzic was manufacturing and distributing children's toys and living at the North Pole.

James Mitchell, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 09:53 (seventeen years ago)

He apparantly worked as a doctor for the last years, under the name Dragan Dabic.

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 10:16 (seventeen years ago)

Also in the news: lots of Serbs feeling "betrayed" that their hero was arrested? Hmm.

StanM, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 06:06 (seventeen years ago)

Sad to say it, but news here in Montenegro last night had a bunch of 'man in the street' interviews, asking people for their reaction, and pretty much all of them were opposed to the arrest, thought Serbia was being controlled by those European devils, etc etc disgusting.

G00blar, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 09:12 (seventeen years ago)

Is that 'man on the street' opinion based on a widespread belief that ethnic cleansing was a good thing or a widespread denial that it happened?

Nasty, Brutish & Short, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 09:18 (seventeen years ago)

So eh, if the good folk of Montenegro love Serb nationalists so much, why did they make their own country independent?

The Real Dirty Vicar, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 09:28 (seventeen years ago)

^^^good question. Montenegro is pretty divided between people who consider themselves Serbs (or consider Montenegro a part of--gulp--Greater Serbia), and people who consider themselves Montenegrins. Many of those people who consider themselves Serbs, like still so many people in Serbia, are nationalist, expansionist pricks. The referendum that made Montenegro independent was won by the slimmest of margins--an awesome thing, but you can't change people's minds by fiat. Will probably take a generation or two to really get rid of the majority of the nasties.

G00blar, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 09:50 (seventeen years ago)

and NBS: it's denial, obviously, also pretty straightforward rooting-for-our-team idiocy. One elderly lady said (this is my wife translating) "A Serb should never go to the Hague". It's pretty standard right-wing foreign devils stuff and it's really frightening how widespread it still is.

G00blar, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 09:52 (seventeen years ago)

Karadzic's Dragan Dabic website is awesome. I would post a link, but fear luring Serb nationalist nutjobs onto ILX.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 12:12 (seventeen years ago)

G00blar, do you reckon the voxpop only asked pro-Serbs their opinions, or only broadcast pro-Karadzic opinions because the opinions of pro independence Montenegrins are less interesting?

The Real Dirty Vicar, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 12:13 (seventeen years ago)

voxpops are a journalistic minefield. They do like 20 of them and then are in theory supposed to represent the approximate distribution of opinion. But how do you do that when you air maybe three, or even one?

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 12:18 (seventeen years ago)

could you google proof that link?

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 12:18 (seventeen years ago)

It's pretty easy to find.

Ned Trifle II, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 12:22 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, we were wondering that too--it was independent (i.e., not pro-Serb, not in the pocket of the govt) news, but we still weren't sure if they'd only shown pro-Serb opinions. It was an awful lot of them (like maybe seven or eight?).

G00blar, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 12:23 (seventeen years ago)

re. website - this is insane!

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 12:25 (seventeen years ago)

http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2009/07/26/magazine/26karadzic-600.jpg

Before he would discuss Dabic, Minic insisted that he needed to use his visak to find out more about me. He held the rooklike pendulum in his hand. A string led to another rook, which he gently dangled at me. “You have Russian blood,” Minic said, as I sampled some sausages. I broke the news that my ancestry was in fact predominantly Scottish.
