Alex in SF, Friday, 18 July 2008 01:55 (fifteen years ago) link

I find myself in the position, once again, of reminding y'all that the source material for 300 was stinky beyond measure. GIGO, yadig?

“I would rather not know [about the movie],” said Moore. “[Zack Snyder] may very well be [a very nice guy], but the thing is that he’s also the person who made 300. I’ve not seen any recent comic book films, but I didn’t particularly like the book 300. I had a lot of problems with it, and everything I heard or saw about the film tended to increase [those problems] rather than reduce them: that it was racist, it was homophobic, and above all it was sublimely stupid. I know that that’s not what people going in to see a film like 300 are thinking about but… I wasn’t impressed with that… I talked to Terry Gilliam in the ’80s, and he asked me how I would make Watchmen into a film. I said, ”Well actually, Terry, if anybody asked me, I would have said, ‘I wouldn’t.”’ And I think that Terry [who aborted his attempted adaptation of the book] eventually came to agree with me. There are things that we did with Watchmen that could only work in a comic, and were indeed designed to show off things that other media can’t.”

Oh my god guys I just watched the preview and it has Le Smashpumps tune that is the rework/b-side of their song 'the thing is the beginning is the stuff' (which I love, btw). You know, their BATMAN song? Wherein they shadow-danced in a giant BATHEAD in the video?

OH YEAH!

Abbott, Sunday, 20 July 2008 18:07 (fifteen years ago) link

Actually the Watchmen trailer got me wicked super stoked and I am actually EXCITED for it rather than EMBARRASSED, which I never could have soothsayed.

Abbott, Sunday, 20 July 2008 18:08 (fifteen years ago) link

Okay I just rewatched that and the Smashing Pumpkins have oficially made 'best video for a motion picture soundtrack, wherein it is required scenes from the movie are cut into the footage." By like 100 country miles.

Abbott, Sunday, 20 July 2008 18:15 (fifteen years ago) link

I like me Abbott's enthusiasm!

I first felt the use of the song was jarring and too much of an overt nod to the 'yeah we're recontextualizing superhero stuff even down to the music DO YOU SEE.' But the pace of the song perfectly suits that of the trailer (be interesting to see what was determined first -- song choice or how the trailer would run) and said slower version was always the one that most attracted me in the first place.

Abbott, Sunday, 20 July 2008 18:26 (fifteen years ago) link

haha i actually instantly thought of ned when i saw the trailer, as if they were marketing this specifically to him.

OMG and whoever that dude playing Veidt is? Wicked sexy!

Beautiful. (Now playing -- the "End is the Beginning..." single, with both versions of the song plus the two instrumental acoustic guitar variations.)

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 20 July 2008 19:15 (fifteen years ago) link

I had that wrong, electric guitar actually. Memories, tricks on the brain.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 20 July 2008 19:24 (fifteen years ago) link

Next trailer will be the whole damn EP, yes, with all the cut footage from the movie.

Abbott, Sunday, 20 July 2008 19:25 (fifteen years ago) link

Hahah, I'd actually forgotten the second instrumental version is essentially Billy's attempt at creating an Alan Wilder-written B-side for Depeche circa 1989. And Flood wasn't even the producer on this one!

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 20 July 2008 19:30 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, I did totally like the way the slowdown at the end of the song synched up with Dr. M's castle rising out of the sand on Mars. That was, as the vernacular would have it, "the shit." Also, lots more detail visible in the trailer when one sees it on the big screen: Partially-formed Dr. M, bone and muscle visible, slamming through the hallway, the Owlship cruising over the protestors with The Comedian standing on the window outside of it, the Egyptian motif stuff in Veidt's office when he takes down the assassin, all excellent.

I couldn't figure out at first where this shot of Silk Spectre dropping into a fiery hallway came from until I saw the Owlship cruising through the fire, and remembered the rooftop rescue scene. Duh.
