The store just went live. Here's a link to it and a link to only the free apps.
You'll need iTunes 7.7 (which was just released) and of course iPhone software 2.0 which I'm still waiting on.

No. You seem to have a v. sandy vagina today. This was far from obvious from your original question, which asked something else entirely. Seriously, how AIM works on iPhone is actually interesting and relevant to this thread, so that's what I thought you were getting at. I got your lovely "ON IPHONE" response when I attempted to clarify and a "thanks for nothing" after I spent a few minutes scrubbing through the keynote video looking for the section I thought you were looking for. So The Google link was in response to you being aggressive and ungrateful toward to a genuine attempt to answer your question. I think you'll live though.

aim app only works while running. You give it yr details once, it remembers them. Tabbed interface -- buddies, statuses and live I'm conversations. It's pretty neat.
Nnw is a disappointment. Offline Reading is nice, but UI not polished, no control over feeds, no unified, poor browser. Very 1.0
iTunes remote is fucking awesome.
Facebook app won't sign in, ffs.
All the book readers are rubbish.

caek, i don't see how you were being anything but purposefully obtuse. obviously, i was asking how the official AIM client works on the iphone, from someone who has used it. if my sandy vagina is clouding my vision then i must be mistaken.
― cutty, Thursday, 10 July 2008 16:31 (4 years ago) Permalink
I wouldn't say you were obviously asking for first-hand experience with AIM on the iPhone; I assumed you wanted PR-speak "this is how it works"-type hype info, as well.

I took "how does it work" to mean, y'know, "how does it work" not "how is it to use". Apparently you meant the latter. I wasn't being obtuse.

Apple's free Remote Application (iTunes Link) is also available and allows you to "control the music on your computer or Apple TV from your iPod touch or iPhone. Play, pause, skip, shuffle. See your songs, playlists, and album art on your iPod touch or iPhone as if you were right in front of your computer. Remote works with your Wi-Fi network, so you can control playback from anywhere in and around your home."
oooh that is cool!
― czn, Thursday, 10 July 2008 17:31 (4 years ago) Permalink
I haven't used the itunes remote app yet (soon I hope!) but from what I've read, it lets you display and play from your computer's itunes library on your iphone/ipod touch. It does it over wifi.

damn! do any of them at least let you skip to a given page in a pdf? i'd settle for that, really.

well also the scale would change whenever you zoom in or out even the tiniest bit? so you'd end up with weird decimal-based scale figures that probably wouldn't be very useful

let's talk about pdf management. at this point i haven't started doing heavy pdf reading on my ipad, but at some point soon i'll want to be able to read some books and academic articles and stuff. right now i just shoved a few of them into ibooks, but that doesn't seem like a good long term solution. is dedicated pdf app + dropbox the way to go? or is there a better way? this is going to be a mess, isn't it?
for what it's worth, i don't think someone who's just going to read a few pdfs needs some sort of system, but i anticipate using this for open access books and academic articles mostly. at least that's what i know i'll use it for now. i'm not in academia but if the people who are and who do this kind of crazy pdf management stuff can shed any light on the situation it'd be appreciated.
― markers, Thursday, 18 April 2013 05:45 (2 months ago) Permalink
as far as the app portion of the system goes i guess there's pdf expert, iannotate, good reader, other stuff? i'd like the best in class app, really.
― markers, Thursday, 18 April 2013 05:46 (2 months ago) Permalink
one of the reasons that spotify's cool for music is because you no longer really have to manage a music library. and although shit like this exists -- http://chronicle.com/blogs/profhacker/browzine/47955 -- i'm still going to have to manage a pdf library for a while it seems. some philosophy books from re.press, some stuff from open humanities press, journal articles from that open access journal, dissertations and shit people post to their personal sites.
― markers, Thursday, 18 April 2013 05:48 (2 months ago) Permalink
one last thing: it seems to me like something involving dropbox or something like dropbox would be ideal because you don't want to just import a bunch of pdfs into an ios app a la ibooks and then have them stuck in there. how would you go about getting all that shit out? you'd probably have to sync with itunes or email everything out, which is just shitty. the goal is to make shit portable enough that whatever app i'm using at the time is interacting with the files but not holding onto them

I just got an iphone recently. Is there a easier way to transfer music than using iTunes? I can't seem to select individual songs or even albums, it insists on doing a complete artists discography when all I want is one record. Something that works in Windows 7 or OSX would be nice!

if it's shit you bought via itunes, you can just grab it directly from the itunes app on your device
iTunes lets you do individual songs or albums. Are you doing the auto-sync or manually managed? You can just drag songs or albums on to the iPhone if the latter
