Specifically, TV units. To put a TV on / in. And a DVD player. And a PS2. And maybe other stuff. That are funky. Where would you look for one?
Wider than TV units, though; what kind of furniture do you like, where do you get it from, what do you consider to be good value?

There's an ILVA in M/cr, which I got a low tv bench from last year that I'm very happy with - plenty of storage for tat in side cupboards and takes telly, amp, dvd, wii and other bits just fine. They don't seem to do the exact one now, but latest catalogue is at www.ilva.co.uk. Only problem I had with ILVA is that their delivery time was *well* off (took 4 months to arrive!). Paid about £250 for this and whilst for that money it's glorified flatpack it does look good.
Otherwise, I know IKEA gets ragged on but they do some staple items (like bookcases) brilliantly. Dwell also has nice stuff, as does Heals, although the latter often feels blatantly overpriced.
Well worth checking eBay too, my favourite furniture in our house (1960s extending dining table and chairs) was £75 from a bloke 5 miles away! The quality is exponentially better than anything I'd pay for "new" and the design is beautiful.

I wanna invest in some Danish modern type of things and I've seen a few things on ebay but I have no clue as to what constitutes a "good price" for these items

TV units are tricky. this system from ikea is VG and quite high-end looking for them. it's one of their more expensive lines.

harbl, first decide what size mattress you want. If you think you will be moving around to different places over the next 5-8 years, you might skip getting a king-size b/c they are hellacious to get into some spaces. Queen-size box springs can also be problematic. You don't have to buy the mattress/box spring at the same place you buy the bedframe. And you can just buy a mattress to start with and sleep with it on the floor or on a basic set of rails (if you get a box spring too) or a basic low platform. Go to some stores determined just to do research and not cave to the high pressure mattress sales guys. Take off your shoes and lie down on all the beds. If you want to get rid of your futon, make sure the place you buy your mattress from will haul off your futon for cheap or free. When you look at bedframes, look for something that is straightforward to take apart and put together if you think you'll be moving around. Platform style frames with central rails are sturdier than frames than those that just support the edges of a box spring, and you can use them with box springs as well as just a mattress.
― Jaq, Saturday, 1 August 2009 15:44 (1 year ago) Permalink
nah i left the futon for my neighbor when i moved, she wanted it and i didn't want to move it. i'm subletting now so i have a bed to sleep on but i'm moving to a new place aug 15. i don't know if i really want a box spring because they're huge and i don't mind if the bed is low, just a platform would be ok. and i don't need a king size for sure. it's just me. (and the occasional guest, if i'm lucky). springs vs. foam vs. latex though?
― blobfish russian (harbl), Saturday, 1 August 2009 16:13 (1 year ago) Permalink
springs vs. foam vs. latex though?
this is why you have to go lie on the demos, so much personal preference. I hated the feeling of sleeping on latex, foam wasn't bad, ended up with some zoned spring w/foam top deal (Mr. Jaq is a sleep-thrasher and it limited the transfer of movement to my side of the bed).

Ikea has these lift up storage bed bases in the US now (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10098893) - I think jesse from the Chicago threads posted about it a few years back. I'm thinking about getting 2 of the 1/2 king ones, but twin mattresses are too short for them? I don't want a king mattress b/c it's been tough getting the queen one into some of the places we've lived.

a lot of designy furniture just looks like it would age so badly, if i paid a lot for something i would want to be able to keep it for a long time
most of the modern euro stuff is incredibly well-made and requires less upkeep than antiques or reproductions of older styles

Depends on what your eye & brain consider a "basic" couch, I suppose. (Or a basic table, or chair, etc.) If you expect to see something in a certain style, you're not always mentally confronting it again and again -- your eye just passes over.
If you think of the style as being bold or loud or obtrusive, then yes, maybe that would wear after a while.
― WHY DON'T YOU JUST LICK THE BUS DIRECTLY (Laurel), Thursday, 21 January 2010 16:38 (7 months ago) Permalink
yah i dont think that any furniture you buy will seem continually fresh or obtrusive or w/e - fading into the background is just kinda what furniture does even the strongest pieces
i do think i like modern/design-y stuff because it feels to me the 'best suited' to contemp urban enviornments - its weird going to ppl's places and seeing heavy antique chesterfields in their living rooms
― Lamp, Thursday, 21 January 2010 16:49 (7 months ago) Permalink
Agreed, altho I grew up in a 1903 house with Victorian furniture so it's possible I'm also wanting a fresher aesthetic in reaction to that.
When I was little, before I knew anything about "modern" or contemporary design, I preferred Craftsman/Prairie over all other styles. Of course in 1988 you could buy Stickley pianos at estate sales because no one wanted them. O_o

I have a large glass tabletop that I might want to use as an addl kitchen counter/work surface. I need some kind of shelving to put under it, that will support the counter and whatever equipment I put on it. Standard counter height is 36" so any combination of shelving should come out to around that.
Suggestions? Advice?
Thoughts:
I like this steel cube system but at 14" high each, the math doesn't work.
Plastic shelving like Ladodo (Container Store) and the Cubitec stuff is close to the right height, but will it hold up under a lot of weight and let me store pots and pans underneath, or will the uprights end up bowed in three months?
