Always wanted to play KotOR, but I don't really give a toss about the Star Wars and I don't know how much of any impediment to enjoying the game that would be.

Okay, Wolfenstein is totally one of those games that people vote for because it's "seminal" or "important", but frankly as a thing for having fun with it wasn't even all that in 1992. It would be fair to describe the gameplay as limited.

I get the feeling this is going to be the thread equivalent of Katamari Damacy, slowly picking up readers and contributors until at around 11pm tomorrow night it ends up with some massed 60 person "WHY IS SHADOW OF THE BEAST #2 NOT RANKED #3????" clusterfuck

Dom Passantino, Saturday, 3 May 2008 11:58 (2 years ago) Permalink

The "highest position" subdivision is a nice touch.

Upt0eleven, Saturday, 3 May 2008 12:01 (2 years ago) Permalink

It was either that or a GameFAQs link.

One day we need Tom's definitive book on mentalist Japanese RPGs. I can take them or leave them meself. Love the Breath of Fire series, some of the early Fighting Fantasys and the first episode of Suikoden, but too often they feel like no-gameplay trawls through Planet Twee, on rails. Haven't got a clue what this is one is like, to be honest. Looking forward to reading an explanation.

Noodle Vague, Saturday, 3 May 2008 12:03 (2 years ago) Permalink

My favourite RPG of the moment is Forumwarz.com, but then again I don't play anything in Japanese other than the FirePro series.

Dom Passantino, Saturday, 3 May 2008 12:05 (2 years ago) Permalink

I'm gonna go on and on about my favourite RPGs further up this list.

emil.y, Saturday, 3 May 2008 12:13 (2 years ago) Permalink

Also, I got bored with Forumwarz after a while. Might go back to it when I'm not supposed to be finishing my degree.

emil.y, Saturday, 3 May 2008 12:14 (2 years ago) Permalink

Diablo 2 = another one I haven't played. Got the first one, liked it in short doses, but the gameplay is essentially "click left mouse button as quick as you can". Hope they varied that up a bit for the sequel.

Noodle Vague, Saturday, 3 May 2008 12:14 (2 years ago) Permalink

Forumwarz has a lot of "grinding" down forums/enemies about a week or so in, but I'm a sucker for meta humour and the BoingBoing zings.

xp

Dom Passantino, Saturday, 3 May 2008 12:15 (2 years ago) Permalink

but frankly as a thing for having fun with it wasn't even all that in 1992

Two words: "MEIN LEBEN!"

Some more: this game was ridiculously fun in 1992! So long as you played it on your uncle's computer with the good sound card and the good processor - it was BLINDINGLY fast and the sounds just seemed MASSIVE - especially the chaingun. And the Nazi exclamations! Okay, banging around smacking spacebar and hoping to find secret doors got old fast, and the whole game looks basically the same, but compared to anything else I was playing at the time it was amazing. And yeah, the violence - cartoony though it seems now - was otherwise unavailable on my PC. The shock of the new!

Yeah, I voted for it largely on "seminal" terms and because its successor DOOM weren't available - but I really did play the hell out of Wolf/Spear.

OKAY! First one of my picks, ridiculously underrated. I spent a small fortune shovelling pounds into one of those Play 10 machines in The Mint in Hull in about 1990 to play this fecker. Completely groovy movement dynamics and didn't really feel like any previous game at the time. Oh how smug I felt when I picked up the first egg and threw it back at that little Dino-looking motherhugger.

Like many another game, all fun completely evaporates when you get to the twat-bastarding ice level.

Noodle Vague, Saturday, 3 May 2008 14:16 (2 years ago) Permalink

SMB2? It was kinda disappointing at the time for me (compared with the still epic SMB1), but still leeched months of otherwise wasted time away. I don't remember if SMB3 made the list, but if so I probably voted pretty high for it.

I didn't vote because my taste in video games is really limited/specific, but here's what my ballot would have been:

1. Super Mario Bros
Legend of Zelda
Mega Man 2
Metroid
Super Mario World
Pac Man
Baseball Stars
Contra
Shadow of the Colossus
10. Super Mario Brothers 3
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past
Ninja Gaiden
Rock Band
Guitar Hero
Madden NFL series
Portal
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Worms Armageddon
20. Katamari Damacy
RBI Baseball
Skate
Half-Life 2
Super Mario Brothers 2
River City Ransom
Resident Evil 4
Super Puzzle Fighter Alpha II Turbo
Metal Gear
Bionic Commando
30. Bubble Bobble

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 06:47 (2 years ago) Permalink

classic ILX poll problem, people who like normal stuff don't vote in them, then the weirdos who DO vote in them complain about how crazy and outlandish and ridiculously off-kilter the results are

not a complaint per se, but i'd question why some games were available to vote for as a series while other sequels were in there individually. it's a pretty interesting list regardless. yay for Monkey Island making the top ten.

Upt0eleven, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 13:05 (2 years ago) Permalink

the GTA games were vastly different from each other, in comparison the Gran Turismo series all looked the flippin same.

Ste, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 13:17 (2 years ago) Permalink

Like I said I think it's incredibly atmospheric, the music and the visuals give me a real sense of place and made me want to explore it. I like the melancholy of it and the almost loneliness of those remote tombs, and it achieves that despite shitty cut scenes and crap voice acting.

the GTA games were vastly different from each other, in comparison the Gran Turismo series all looked the flippin same.

but equally the championship manager games on the amiga were totally different beasts from the one Dom and Louis are OCD about today. pro evolution soccer series (this is called Winning Eleven in the US right? lol) similarly changed a lot from the original incarnations of it.

monkey island one and two otoh, as with a number of other games in that list, were very much cut from the same cloth ----> vote splitting. as a series they would have presumably cracked the top 5. Governor Elaine marley the first fictioinal character i had a crush on.

Upt0eleven, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 13:57 (2 years ago) Permalink

Just like to point out that last night on Football Manager 2008, I got Northampton Town promoted to the Premiership. In the 2016/2017 season. On the playoffs. After we'd been out of the play-offs all season up to the last three games. And losing the first leg 5-3 (won the second leg 2-0 and got through on penalties). And won the final 1-0 after West Brom had their catain sent off in the third minute.

Our ground capacity is 13,500. We are going to get royally SHAGGED this season.

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 14:00 (2 years ago) Permalink

The game I am playing right now I got Ipswich up to the Prem in 2009-2010, and I think I am going to finish in 17th place! Woooooooo! They're one of the easier Champ teams, but all champ teams are difficult in the Prem...
