sitting in silence, watching hipsters

lag∞n, Wednesday, 4 January 2012 22:56 (twelve years ago) link

It's a much hipper, classier place than I belong at, although the prices are reasonable. The boyfriend (almost the only man in the place not wearing ridiculously tight pants) and I approached the counter inside to put a name in, and then my t-shirt and ratty skirt came in handy: the owner saw my Derby Dolls shirt and struck up a conversation, and a few minutes later, he's telling the hostess that we're VIPs. We got seated at a table on the patio marked "reserved." Take THAT, hipsters who put effort into their outfits!

i have only had bad service a half-dozen times in my life ... but all of them were memorable enough that i wanted some recourse.

Once I wrote a negative yelp review, because service was so bad. it was a really nasty yelp excoriation. i got a haircut that made me look like a lesbian with down syndrome. at least that's what the OTHER BARBER at the place said, when they wrote me an email trying to fix the haircut. I didn't accept, and I didn't take down the review –– nor did I go back to yelp. Still kinda feel bad for it, but only a little.

i wrote an article for my zine called death of the hipster, check it yelpers shits over

sulks (Lamp), Wednesday, 4 January 2012 22:57 (twelve years ago) link

'hipster' seems to be used in reviews to refer to any young people who began frequenting the place after the writer first visited

gnome rocognise gnome (remy bean), Wednesday, 4 January 2012 22:58 (twelve years ago) link

sifting through the reviews of this place is like the blood test from 'the thing', trying to figure out which non-hipsters are actually hipsters, because apparently only people are pretending not to be hipsters but actually are go here.

omar little, Wednesday, 4 January 2012 22:58 (twelve years ago) link

hipsters who fake not being hipsters are the worst

lag∞n, Wednesday, 4 January 2012 23:02 (twelve years ago) link

I stopped believing in hipsters but maybe that's the moment I became one

every time you say i dont believe in hipsters a hipster gets his skinny jeans

I'm also not a fan of a place that shamelessly panders to hipsters by putting dozens of old beer signs up for beer they don't serve. Seems like a desperate attempt at fitting in in the neighborhood.

So I visited here on the hunt for an 80s style formal dress for a halloween costume. This store was certainly the 80s dress jackpot. Especially if you were, say, a 26-28" waist. Which I am not. But they had 20 dresses in varying sizes and designs. I found that most of the dresses were measured in waist sizes, although a few of them were still item/brand sized. The measurements weren't entirely accurate, but I suppose they gave a ballpark estimate of whether a patron would or would not be able to wear it.

The prices were a little higher than some of the other shops that I visited (Blacklist, Rewind) but lower than others as well (Lulas, B-squad, Vias, ... and that other one on Selby, the name escapes me). I mean, thats ok, I'd still be purchasing a dress for fairly cheap. I can deal with that. But what really sort of ruined the experience for me was the staff. Ok, and maybe the ghetto-rigged fitting rooms. But mainly the staff (3.5 star review minus one for hipster workers). They completely ignored me even after I gushed a bit about our costume idea. The two or three of them were so busy talking to some guy that walked in, I ended up putting my own items back and getting new dresses myself. Struggling through the store with six dresses made of titanic sized portions of tulle, sequins, and taffeta. Then I got booted out of my fitting room that I had popped out of to renew my selection. That was pretty super too.

'Mkay, sorry that I wasn't cool enough to be all in on your conversation. But really, isn't the point of working at a store kind of to help the patron buy shit? Not to glare at them and whisper behind their back? I did not make a purchase here. They probably whispered even more after that. "OMG whos that mess with the LL Bean fleece? Thats so lame, my mother wears those." Sorry, I forgot my vintage whateverthefuckIshouldhavebeenwearing. I'll bring it next time. Maybe then I'll get some help.

thinking about this place makes me drool.

LIKES: Chicken and fries... whats there not to like?
DISLIKES: Parking maybe? Ghetto neighborhood?

omar little, Wednesday, 4 January 2012 23:14 (twelve years ago) link

I would give this place 3.5 stars. I think if it weren't so ghetto I would give it 4 stars. Yeah, that's right, I said it, ghetto.

There's a difference between hole in the wall and straight up ghetto. The difference is the safety of your life. Haha. I was a bit scared eating at Dinos. Even with my boyfriend, I was still a bit scared. And I'm not THAT big of a scare-dy cat!?

omar little, Wednesday, 4 January 2012 23:16 (twelve years ago) link

Dinos on Pico? Place is great, but it is kinda dicey tbh

The boy is drawn to hipster-douche vegans.

I hate this way of referring to a s/o but think the rest of this paragraph is great.

i mean i understand how a dining experience can be bad but, like, a level-1-adult skill is to be able to not throw a tantrum about trivial shit.

well if you count "posting about it on the internet" as the equivilent to "throwing a tantrum" then let me point out that this thread has nearly 9,000 posts
