i think the problem is often that ppl expect very high quality service but don't realize that you get the kind of service you pay for. at really expensive restaurants you pay a lot and the service is compensated better and it often attracts more talented staff who are happier + more fulfilled at their jobs. if you go to a cheap place that pays their waiters minimum wage those waiters might not feel like verbally blowing you is in their job description. that said, if you do go to a really expensive restaurant and you feel disrespected or the service is poor, i think it's perfectly legitimate to not want to go back again!

cant image what the yelper who thought the macaroni grill server was looking down her nose at them would think was going on inside the head of an employee of a genuinely nice restaurant, prob have to call in homeland security
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 4 January 2012 21:06 (twelve years ago) link
"not go back" and "piss and moan on yelp" are two different things. there's some kind of basic human law to not make a big deal out of "bad" service. i eat out all the time and i can't really remember any remarkably horrible service. some people must have wildly inflated expectations about what a dinner in a restaurant is supposed to be like, esp some kind of chain place. just be patient and enjoy your meal, shit.
― goole, Wednesday, 4 January 2012 21:07 (twelve years ago) link
haha well i almost think they feel like it was ok since that server is probably making p good $$$ and not MINIMUM WAGE or w/e and thus deserves some modicum of human decency
― sulks (Lamp), Wednesday, 4 January 2012 21:07 (twelve years ago) link
feel like the prototypical yelp complains abt some aspect of the service thats not actually off, just offended some random yelper pet peeve

having served at a p busy brunch place i feel the most true to life yelp complaints are the ones that are like 'we heard about how great this place was and then had to wait in line 45 MINUTES for a table and honestly, i could have just gotten cum in my mouth at home'
― sulks (Lamp), Wednesday, 4 January 2012 21:11 (twelve years ago) link
yes, it is v clear to my eyes that reading any of these "yelpers" marks them out as some kind of terrible and blind human being. it's some kind of dog whistle that i can't understand why everyone can't hear it. the site is filled with horrible people writing in a competitive knowitall way acting pissy about decent people who are working. do they not all understand how they are acting out the bitchy maggie smith part in a costume drama?
― goole, Wednesday, 4 January 2012 21:13 (twelve years ago) link
i think they do, i think they just dont realize that people only like to watch the dowager countess on tv, not serve her food
― max, Wednesday, 4 January 2012 21:15 (twelve years ago) link
i do want to stress tho that having bad service and feeling bad about an eating out experience is not wrong or bad in any way
the psychosis comes from the obsessive need to then chronicle that experience on YELP and earn contributor points for those bitchy reviews so that you can get invited to cool YELP parties and year YELP hats + other merch

and wear*
Been to this place several times for the patio siting. The last time we went we had to get a seat inside. We were seated right away and did not have to wait. The food was ok. We both had the 7 course meal with wine. Some of the courses were soo tiny and lacking flavor. The steak was very well cooked. There were many snobby hipsters pretending they knew about wine and food. the timing on the courses was good. we ended up staying till closing. The parking lot is small and has holes so watch out. The fun part about this place was listening to other people trying to impress their dates. lol
― goole, Wednesday, 4 January 2012 21:20 (twelve years ago) link
there's a popular "high-end" restaurant here with ridiculous prices that staffs 22 year olds who basically give deluxe pitches.
i think it's mainly about food culture. where i live it seems like most people "eat out" because they want to consume a status experience. hospitality businesses are viewed with suspicion. if you're a regular joe, you get lunch at subway and take everyone to cafe rio on friday. somewhere "nicer" invites self-consciousness. people get defensive and act like assholes to coke-snorting twenty-something waiters/waitresses who probably aren't treated very well in the first place.
there are good places to eat/relax that aren't expensive, but they're mostly run by people who are from somewhere else.
xps

Great Patio, good apps....nice wait staff....snooty host
I am rating this solely as a afternoon summer watering hole.
Had the olive plate and the bread was fantastic, topped with carmelized onions and roasted garlic.
The mojitos were crisp and refreshing and the stella although not on tap is always nice on a sunny afternoon.
I would have gave this place four stars but the host/floor manager/ resdient hag was an absolute bitch. Slow to seat us, snooty about which sections of the patio were open....and nothing when we walked past her on the way out...She was almost bitchy enough to ruin a wonderful afternoon....but I am not going to let one twatwaffle ruin a good drinking session....fer fucks sakes I was with my parents can I get a little goddamn service.

practical!
i mean i understand how a dining experience can be bad but, like, a level-1-adult skill is to be able to not throw a tantrum about trivial shit.

Their chefs are realy trigger happy with the black pepper grinder. As an adult I like more bold flavors; however, its typically not high on a kid's food top-10.
According to the waitress they absolutely don't use pepper in their food?!According to the manager a couple of minutes later, Luce is known for its spicy food.... What is it?I don't mind either way, but know what you sell and inform you clientele honestly.
All-in-all: mediocre food, inadequate service (turning to real bad when asked about the food), perhaps a 'cool' place for dinks and other trendsetters, but not for families.
"dinks"???

Have we talked about the gazillion reviews that take this format:
"Reservations, check. Nice bottle of wine to share with good friends, check. Get to the restaurant on time, check. Delicious, inspired food from a chef that puts much care and effort into his craft, check. Awkward, scattered, uncoordinated service that negatively affected the meal, check. Waaaait, huh?!?"

well there are a lot of 'hilarious' cryptoconservative yelp reviews for various prisons
― sulks (Lamp), Wednesday, 4 January 2012 21:37 (twelve years ago) link
The Taichung court that ultimately ruled on the case decided that Liu's review was libelous because it was written after just one dinner, and so was not well-informed enough for such harsh judgment. The decision is final.
judge otm, minimum three visits before reviewing, well known standard - take care yelpers

I seriously envy that you've never had remarkably horrible service. There is an entire Boston chain that I will not go to because 8 times out of 10 I have had service that was horrible to the point where I would not be surprised if there was a corporate policy in place about minimizing the presence of black people in their establishments.

The only times I've had really terrible service was at Applebee's, but even then I felt it served me right for patronizing Applebee's.

And this was two separate times -- unfortunately my husband's family really LOVES Applebee's for whatever reason.

beyond poor service reviews, there's an amazing anti-hipster slant to yelp which is almost like restaurant huac hearings, like they'll finger places as being hipster safehouses and use that as a strike against them, even when a place is basically a family restaurant and the people there wearing trucker hats are being achingly sincere in their fashion choice.
― omar little, Wednesday, 4 January 2012 22:44 (twelve years ago) link
