Still trying to dig up high school photos.

I went to Lincoln High School. We were the "Railsplitters" due to Abraham Lincoln's widely known railroad days.

I was in orchestra, did a couple science fairs, and Academic Decathlon. I also had really long hair in a ponytail and kept to myself.

the university of hawaii teams used to be called THE RAINBOW WARRIORS and sort of still are, but they replaced the rainbow with a stylized H ft. hawaiian iconography and allowed each sport to choose their own name and there was this huge complicated fight over it between 1) the university, 2) hawaiian activists opposing the use of the iconography and 3) football players who had been complaining for years about being called the rainbow warriors

― difficult listening hour, Wednesday, May 25, 2011 11:07 AM (3 hours ago) Bookmark

yeah each sport has a different name:

This has led to the current situation, where the basketball, swimming and diving, and tennis teams have retained the team name of "Rainbow Warriors;" the baseball team adopted the name "Rainbows;" and the football, golf, and volleyball teams have adopted the name "Warriors."

also hi DLH we dont interact much but i live in hawaii

The Arkansas Tech women's teams are the Golden Suns. They've got this nice vibrant logo and everything. For a team out of Russellville, Ark., it almost makes them sound exotic.

The men's teams, like the football team? THE WONDER BOYS.

Academic Decathlon - never even heard of this! We didn't have it but it sounds like something I would have been into. Not only was I in orchestra but I also had a jacket like a letterman jacket, red with white leather sleeves, but instead of a sport it said ORCHESTRA on the back. Yeah. I was p cool.

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Thursday, 26 May 2011 01:34 (twelve years ago) link

oh Jesus, I was in orchestra, but never in my life would I have worn a letter jacket.

kate78, Thursday, 26 May 2011 01:36 (twelve years ago) link

I know. But listen, I went to an all girls' Catholic HS. I had no clue what was cool and what wasn't until I made friends on the outside in jr and sr year by which point I'd def stopped wearing the damn thing. Oh it totally had my name on the front too.

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Thursday, 26 May 2011 01:38 (twelve years ago) link

It had a big-ass harp on the back too.

*hangs head in shame*

That 60's illustration on roxy's flyer is driving me crazy, I know I've seen it before. It looks very Beth and Joe Krush.

corey, judging from this photo and the ones on wdyll, you have aged perfectly.

mh, Thursday, 26 May 2011 02:57 (twelve years ago) link

I'd agree if it weren't for the fact I'll probably be bald by 30 and completely grey by 35. Ah well.

i don't know, looking that much like your mom at 14 is kind of awful. i mean, i had big indie-rock glasses and listened to crust-punk, which is equally embarassing, but in a completely different way.

i must say, tho, it is kind of cute. and everyone in that pic has a winning smile.

AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

x-post

We were happy cause we were in fucking Mexico. lol.

Yeah it's just the same hair same glasses etc. that freaks me out. I was a really young 14 year old though and didn't really start doing my own thing for like another year after this. I just didn't realize quite how much of a clone I was until I found this a couple weeks ago.

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Thursday, 30 June 2011 00:48 (twelve years ago) link

i think given her druthers my mom would have dressed me just like her, too. she would always suggest i buy stuff she would wear when we went shopping. i don't think it was sinister, just a lack of imagination.

horseshoe, Thursday, 30 June 2011 00:50 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah see I think her mini-me from from birth to 15 sort of made me go off the deep end which is how I wound up with purple hair and dressed in head to toe thrifted polyester stuff a year later. Also NAVGL but in a diff way entirely.

Also why were those glasses so big?! I blam Sally Jesse.

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Thursday, 30 June 2011 00:52 (twelve years ago) link

ice cr?m i think we would have been friends.

bitch u ain't british (the table is the table), Thursday, 30 June 2011 00:54 (twelve years ago) link

iirc ernest hemingway's mom made him dress like her

☂ (max), Thursday, 30 June 2011 00:55 (twelve years ago) link

my mom's collection of Ferragamos and Balenciaga in the 80s would have made me one very faggoty looking little boy. i liked wearing tight Superman shirts and sleeveless things with words like POW on them, at least until i was 9 or 10.
