go see it.(11.1 - u.k., 25.1 - u.s.)

it's the best movie of 2007, (at long last the best choose Cannes could make))
in the tradition of the other great romaniam film "death of mr.lazarascu" extreme realism pace and tone, and maybe even better, because it has more simple yet genius cinematic ideas built into it.(esp. the contrasts between the external and internal dramas)

very very very imressive,
and i hope this thread will be revived alot next month.

one month passes...

someone?

Zeno, Monday, 28 January 2008 00:44 (sixteen years ago) link

Still waiting for it to come to town. Maybe next week?

Wot I said on my Flixter thing:

I knew it would be harrowing, but I wasn't expecting it to be so very tense. Kept me in its grip throughout and was brilliant at portraying a world in which just everyday living was made a pain in the arse at every turn, even without a friend's unwanted pregnancy to deal with.

Alba, Monday, 28 January 2008 01:01 (sixteen years ago) link

the real and unpleasent view of abortion, more "vera drake" than "knocked juno up" i guess.

Zeno, Monday, 28 January 2008 01:05 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm really having trouble motivating myself to want to see this.

Melissa W, Monday, 28 January 2008 01:05 (sixteen years ago) link

you should, it's the best movie ive seen in a long time (along with the PTA blood one).

Zeno, Monday, 28 January 2008 01:07 (sixteen years ago) link

There Will Be Blood could work as the title for this too.

Alba, Monday, 28 January 2008 01:11 (sixteen years ago) link

it could work for half of the movies ever made

Zeno, Monday, 28 January 2008 01:12 (sixteen years ago) link

For some reason "There Will Be Pus" came into my head when I was walking around town today.

Alba, Monday, 28 January 2008 01:13 (sixteen years ago) link

Anyway, sorry. 4M3W&2D. Terrific. Really. Not just a chore to see, like you might expect. I think you're right about some of its cinematic strengths, which are unshowy and unsubtle.

Alba, Monday, 28 January 2008 01:15 (sixteen years ago) link

"just everyday living was made a pain in the arse at every turn"

perfectly exampled on that disturbing dinner with the family scene.
we feel the same inner tense of the main character, though she doesnt have a word on the script.
perfecrtly shot,great idea.

Zeno, Monday, 28 January 2008 01:17 (sixteen years ago) link

That dinner scene was brilliant. The way it just held on her face for God knows how long, with all the chatter around her, a crescendo of unsettling inanity.

Alba, Monday, 28 January 2008 01:21 (sixteen years ago) link

I thought it was better than The Lives Of Others at portraying the claustrophobia of life under communism.

Alba, Monday, 28 January 2008 01:23 (sixteen years ago) link

i think he was influenced by Chantal Akerman on that scene.and soem others.

Zeno, Monday, 28 January 2008 01:25 (sixteen years ago) link

right.
"life of others" was, esp. at the annoying end, more hollywooded styled movie.
4 months, is super realistic, and thats why more effective to understand.

Zeno, Monday, 28 January 2008 01:27 (sixteen years ago) link

I want to see but am having a hard time making myself go as well, it's playing on directv pay-per-view but I was more in the mood for Mr. Woodcock last night. one of those things I'll get distracted from if i don't sit my ass in a theater

A B C, Monday, 28 January 2008 01:30 (sixteen years ago) link

Honestly, it's really gripping.

Alba, Monday, 28 January 2008 01:34 (sixteen years ago) link

it's a 100% art house movie.
keep that in mind before you go, and it will be easier to keep the patience

Zeno, Monday, 28 January 2008 01:36 (sixteen years ago) link

two weeks pass...

Really well handled.

They should show this as a double bill with Juno.

czn, Thursday, 14 February 2008 09:28 (sixteen years ago) link

Really quite funny in places too.

ten years pass...

surprised there are no other threads on ilx for Cristian Mungiu

Graduation on the surface is mundane, but it is such a dense, loaded film

Dan S, Thursday, 24 January 2019 03:19 (five years ago) link

with a protagonist desperately wanting to save his child from a diminished life, enduring indignities and compromise. There is a sense of something looming, an unnamed resentment or malevolence in the surrounding community reminiscent of The White Ribbon (a film which shares a major cast member with this)

Dan S, Friday, 25 January 2019 03:34 (five years ago) link

a graduation from innocence

Dan S, Friday, 25 January 2019 03:53 (five years ago) link

low level threats, rocks through windows, smashed windshields, “I’ll talk to them” corruption, "may I ask you a favor?"
