hmmm... I might go for the weekends. Seems lame, but four days off/week would be sweet.

Swings would be okay if it started later and finished up at the same time or later-ish. 2:30 is just early enough to ruin your day.

honestly i have no idea if this poll is asking what shift we currently work or which one we'd choose under the given conditions.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 29 November 2007 03:14 (sixteen years ago) link

this is the first job i've ever had that was 9 to 5. i showed up my first day at 8 because it never occurred to me that work started at any other time.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 29 November 2007 03:16 (sixteen years ago) link

the three 13 hours would rule. too bad it has to be weekends. I've lobbied long and hard (that;s right, baby) for 4/10 hour shifts at our office. 3/13 would be even cooler.

I used to work with a pressman who basically worked 4:30 a.m. to noonish. That's the closest thing to hell I can imagine.

Rock Hardy, Thursday, 29 November 2007 03:19 (sixteen years ago) link

will, Thursday, 29 November 2007 03:19 (sixteen years ago) link

more or less m-f schwings, plus saturdays. shifts start anywhere from 2 to 5, depending on the day (11 a.m. on saturdays), but most often it's 2-9 or 3-10. i don't mind the shift. i get mornings with the kid, and still usually get home before my wife's asleep.

tipsy mothra, Thursday, 29 November 2007 03:21 (sixteen years ago) link

I love swing shifts! Get to sleep in 'till noon, run errands before work, and then stay up and play until 3 a.m. bcz...you only have to wake up at noon. My ideal thing.

ALmost every place I've worked it's been Friday-Monday w/Tues & Weds. as days off, which I think is great! No one is ever around on those days. Drawback: I would flip out how many people there are in this wide wide world of sports if ever I did go to stores/entertainment on weekends.

Abbott, Thursday, 29 November 2007 03:47 (sixteen years ago) link

The weekend thing sounds awesome. I find something extra-relaxing about having time off when everyone else is working (maybe because places to go are less crowded?) and four days straight would be saweet.

Hurting 2, Thursday, 29 November 2007 03:49 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah and I seem to get an amazing amount of work done when I have to go in on the weekends. no distractions, etc.

my personal favorite work schedule ever was 0700-1900 12s on a two week cycle like so, capitals on, lowercase off:

SAT SUN MON tue wed THU FRI sat sun mon TUE WED thu fri

of course this was in the military where you get paid the same whether you work 36 or 136 hours per week

El Tomboto, Thursday, 29 November 2007 03:53 (sixteen years ago) link

on paper:

7.5 hours/day, flex time

reality:

PM swing, and I hate the shit. 3-11. Home at 11:30. Brain doesn't settle til at least 2. Have to be up at 6 for a bus.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 29 November 2007 04:43 (sixteen years ago) link

I show up when I feel like it, but am supposed to be in before 8:30....and then I have to stay at least 8 hours, but lately have been staying 9-10

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Thursday, 29 November 2007 04:49 (sixteen years ago) link

Technically I haven't worked a regular hours job for a long time. A good 60% or so of my job has to get done between the hours of 8:30-4:30 (due to when courts are open) but I often only need 4-5 out of those eight hours. The rest can be done at home, and I'm kind of bad about scheduling that in a way that it doesn't sprawl into the rest of my life.

Hurting 2, Thursday, 29 November 2007 05:06 (sixteen years ago) link

Before that I had the newspaper, where I was sorta supposed to come in every morning, but I also sorta had a lot of freedom because no one really knew whether I was "on the beat" or not ( or seemed to much care ). Of course I generally wound up working 12 or more hours on deadline day, but that was partly due to my own procrastination.

Hurting 2, Thursday, 29 November 2007 05:07 (sixteen years ago) link

For the past 3 weeks, and for the foreseeable future: 11 to 12 hour days (6:30 am to 6 or maybe 8 pm), 7 days/week, a 3-hour flight from home (I did get to go home for Thanksgiving at the last minute however). The resume was polished up 2 weeks ago and started hitting in-boxes immediately thereafter. I'm longing for the 9 9s schedule I left for this job (9 hour days M-F week 1; 9 hour days M-W week 2, 8 hour day Thursday, then 3 day weekend).

Jaq, Thursday, 29 November 2007 05:22 (sixteen years ago) link

J0rdan S., Thursday, 29 November 2007 05:33 (sixteen years ago) link

I work a 9/80 schedule, which means that in a two-week, 80-hour pay period, I work nine of those days. Four nine-hour days followed by an eight-hour day the first week, then four nine-hour days and a day off the second day. Too bad I sleep in all day on my Fridays off.

naus, Thursday, 29 November 2007 05:42 (sixteen years ago) link

...and a day off the second week.

naus, Thursday, 29 November 2007 05:43 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah and I seem to get an amazing amount of work done when I have to go in on the weekends. no distractions, etc.

This reminds me... Big irritation: not weekend people, but people who work from home who say the same thing about getting through much more without distractions.

Distractions are work that some poor sod based in the office is dealing with in your absence.

Bob Six, Thursday, 29 November 2007 08:21 (sixteen years ago) link

some distractions are, sure. but a lot of them aren't, they're just the byproduct of lots of people doing lots of different things in a contained space. the thing i've always liked about weekends is the relative emptiness. it's just a much more relaxed environment, the vibe is different, the flow of the work is different. (same way i felt about my college campus during the summer. that was my favorite time to be there.)

close enough to this, but i finish between 4-6 pm instead. M-F, and i love having weekends off-it's still a novelty after 10 years of working through school/college.

darraghmac, Thursday, 29 November 2007 10:06 (sixteen years ago) link

Mostly 9-5, for over 10 years now. Did one or two night shifts as a one off, which I surprisingly enjoyed.

tried 6am -2pm once but failed to wake up and this was for a busy transport planning office, doh!, they never put me on that shift again.

The worst I did for a year was 12-8pm. Such a day killer.

El Tomboto, Thursday, 29 November 2007 15:12 (sixteen years ago) link

i would kill for 11-7 or 12-8. getting to work by 9 KILLS me. it's too early, the subways are too crowded, i'm cranky all day and i don't get any work done til after 10:30ish anyways cos i'm not properly awake. which is why i get to work on time exactly never. and NEVER leave by 5. i can't even remember the last time i've left at 5. it's almost always 6 or 7.

i'm supposed to take an hour for lunch but i almost never do.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 29 November 2007 15:48 (sixteen years ago) link

I work from around 9.15am to 6.30pm, though I'm prepared to come in earlier if it's really necessary.

My colleague has joined a team where everyone starts at 8am and has given in to peer pressure to do the same. I'd have resisted it myself.

Bob Six, Thursday, 29 November 2007 17:04 (sixteen years ago) link

I haven't got a clue any more. Nominaly 9-9:30 to 17:30 ish but I have hardly been in the office for weeks. Travelling on business, when does work end?

Ed, Friday, 30 November 2007 09:00 (sixteen years ago) link

when I travelled I was definitely working nearly all 18 hours available to me outside of lunch, dinner and sleep. I can see how it would get to you but really to me that was the most invigorating experience I've had in probably ever. Hence the suspicion that I may be in the wrong line of work.

yeah, my supervisors both have those (not factory shifts though), they work four ten hour days and then get three day weekend. i would love that schedule.

Maria, Thursday, 18 December 2008 17:23 (fifteen years ago) link

that's what a few of our mids guys do. They used to let a couple of us roll like that on days but then everybody wants that schedule and it becomes an unsustainable clusterfuck because we're still in an office environment where most of the support staff and management are bankers' hours/9-5 types.
