And even Joey Potter knew better than to go around calling people "home skillet".

well i think this film is much worse than lost in translation, which I guess people here hate, and I can understand the criticisms, but you have to admit LiT LOOKED wonderful, it's a very lush film. there is nothing particularly striking about how Juno looks, it's a plot and story driven film. it's alright.

akm, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 14:56 (sixteen years ago) link

Lost in Translation is a much better movie, in part because Coppola understood that dialogue is not essential.

Lost in Translation is a much worse movie, in part because Coppola thinks long silences suffice to express depth of feeling.

haha, I think you're both kind of otm. She understands that silence is sometimes better than dialogue, but hasn't quite figured out what to do with the silence.

Quirk usually gives me hives, but I thought it was pretty easy to overlook in this one - guy from Six Feet Under in the beginning, and Michael Cera (and maybe the best friend part of the time) - but the core parents-Juno-wannabe parents were solid.

milo z, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 17:53 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm glad there's at least one other person out there who would refer to the guy from The Office as the guy from Six Feet Under.

Eric H., Tuesday, 26 February 2008 17:55 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, I just watched the entire series of SFU a few months ago, have only seen a couple of episodes of The Office in my life, and still it took me a long time to realize you were talking about Rainn Wilson.

time to throw another log on the bonfire!

The box office hit "Juno" will be the first Fox Home Entertainment DVD to be sold at Starbucks coffee outlets in the United States, the studio said Wednesday. The DVD will be released April 15.

who was Wilson on 6FU? (I abandoned it before the last season)

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 19:08 (sixteen years ago) link

so Juno was cast from multiple pretentious TV series... I guess Junior Ghostbuster doesn't get to the movies much.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 19:12 (sixteen years ago) link

that Alias, so fucking pretentious that show.

Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 19:14 (sixteen years ago) link

Don't get Morbs started on The West Wing either ;>)

C. Grisso/McCain, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 19:26 (sixteen years ago) link

AiB, MILFness and irresistibility to Gary Busey trumps all.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 20:17 (sixteen years ago) link

Rainn Wilson played an apprentice funeral director one season.

i was thinking this morning that the Adventures of Pete and Pete would have been the only thing that could've pulled off the Juno dialogue.

Yerac, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 00:44 (sixteen years ago) link

The Adventures of Pete and Pete is an interesting comparison but that show was much better. Pete Wrigley was much more endearing than the Juno girl.

Juno reminds me of this review John Simon did in the late 70s of a Erica Jong novel. He criticized Jong's book for being, essentially, a quasi-autobiographical masturbation fantasy where there is only one character in the entire work (the young female who is obviously based on the author) who is really real. Everybody else is just quirky filler and is meant to contrast to the protagonists' superior charm, intellect and authenticity.

So I saw Jennifer's Body last night. Diablo Cody is still up to her slangy dialog writing tricks, which blunted the impact of any horror movie scares the movie might have had. But as a comedy it made for a mildly amusing, enjoyable watch, even if not very LOL. I found the friction between the two tones interesting and it made me a fan of her style.

Also, Megan Fox really surprised me with how good an actress she is. But is it good acting, casting, or directing? and is there really much of a difference in all those things?

i rank this up there with 500 days of summer (which was even worse) as the film with the most cloyingly overplayed references to its characters' love of indie rock

I recently passed by the Milk and Honey store in Port Coquitlam where some of this movie was filmed. It's now gone - closed down after about 40 years. However there's a tattoo place close by called "Ink and Honey".

What a piece of shit movie. Fake cleverness, piss-poor dialogue masquerading as edgy, annoying and dislikable characters, and forced preciousness. Also that one song is a total rip-off of "Surrey with the Fringe on Top" from Oklahoma.

Lazarus Niles-Burnham (res), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 23:08 (thirteen years ago) link

was at a video rental place the other day, and the clerk was watching the last act of juno. i'd been on the fence about the film at the time of its release and have halfheartedly defended it since, but holy shit is it grating! i sincerely regret anything nice i might ever have said about it. ellen page's performance is horribly forced, and the dialogue an agonizing parade of desperate would-be cleverness. oh god, and the saccharine, cutie-pie nonsense music, it never stops. the whole thing is trying so hard in every moment to be smart, hip and endearing that it becomes a terrible form of abuse. the worst part was that i had come into the store near the end of the film and was glad when it was over, only to have the dude start the damn thing up again, like he was studying it. chased me right back out into the street (which may have been the point, i dunno).

it's hard to believe that so many people see this movie as an honest statement

The best part of this whole movie was JK Simmons but he's pretty much the best period.

this isnt a bad movie - like, it's not for me at all, but i expected it to be a lot worse - thought the jen garner character was pretty well handled

i can't fathom why it got oscar love, but part of the reason I can't hate this movie hardcore is that I'm down with those precocious teens getting a movie catered directly to them
